Slow Roamix eSIM? Fix Slow or Dropping Data Speeds

Slow eSIM speeds are frustrating, and the fix depends on the cause. The most common culprits are a near-empty data balance, your device connecting to a slower carrier, Low Data Mode being enabled, or simply poor signal in your current location. Work through the steps below to diagnose and fix the issue.

Check Your Data Balance First

If you're down to the last few hundred MB, some networks reduce speeds automatically. Log in to roamix.app, go to My eSIMs, and check your remaining balance. If you're at or very near 0 GB, top up immediately — this is the fastest fix.

If your balance looks fine, continue to the next steps.

Turn Off Low Data Mode

Low Data Mode deliberately reduces background data usage and can make apps feel slow even on a fast connection.

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > tap your Roamix eSIM line > toggle "Low Data Mode" to off. Also check Wi-Fi Low Data Mode: Settings > Wi-Fi > tap your network > toggle off.

Android (Data Saver): Settings > Network & Internet > Data Saver > toggle off. Confirm Roamix isn't in the "Restricted" list for background data.

Manually Select a Network Carrier

This is one of the most effective speed fixes when traveling. Your device's automatic carrier selection may pick a carrier based on signal strength rather than data speed — and some carriers are significantly faster than others in a given location.

iPhone:

  1. Settings > Cellular > Network Selection.
  2. Toggle "Automatic" to off.
  3. Wait for the list of available networks (10–30 seconds).
  4. Select each available carrier one at a time and run a speed test at fast.com after each switch.
  5. Stick with whichever gives the best speeds.

Android:

  1. Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Networks > Network operators (or "Carrier").
  2. Tap "Search networks".
  3. Select each available network and test speeds.

In some destinations, switching from one carrier to another can take you from 5 Mbps to 50 Mbps — a dramatic difference.

Move for Better Signal

Physical location matters enormously for mobile data speeds:

  • Go outdoors or near a window: Mobile signals weaken significantly when passing through walls, floors, and ceilings. If you're in the middle of a large building or underground, speeds drop.
  • Avoid crowded areas during peak hours: Train stations, airports, and stadiums during busy periods have extremely congested networks. Wait or move away.
  • Elevation helps: Higher floors in buildings often have better line-of-sight to towers.

Even moving 10–20 meters can make a noticeable difference if you're near the edge of a coverage area.

Toggle Airplane Mode

Forcing your device to reconnect to the network from scratch often resolves slow connections caused by a sub-optimal network attachment.

  1. Open Control Center and enable Airplane Mode.
  2. Wait 15 seconds.
  3. Disable Airplane Mode.
  4. Give your phone 30–60 seconds to fully reconnect before testing speeds.

Check for Software Issues

  • Restart your device: A full power cycle clears modem and radio state that can degrade over time.
  • Update iOS/Android: Network modem drivers and carrier settings updates sometimes improve performance. Settings > General > Software Update on iPhone; Settings > System > System update on Android.
  • Reset Network Settings (last resort): iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This clears all saved Wi-Fi passwords and cellular settings and gives you a clean slate. Android: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.

Contact Roamix Support

If you've tried all of the above and speeds remain unusably slow (below 1 Mbps consistently), the issue may be a network problem on the carrier side at your destination. Contact support@roamix.app with your order number, current country, and the results of a speed test at fast.com. We'll investigate the network conditions and escalate if needed.

Speeds back to normal? Top up your Roamix data from the dashboard to make sure you stay connected for the rest of your trip.
