eSIM Stuck on 'Activating'? Here's How to Fix It

Seeing "Activating" or "Waiting for Activation" after installing your Roamix eSIM is normal and usually resolves on its own within 15 minutes. If it's been longer than that, the steps below will get you sorted.

Is This Normal?

Yes — especially on iPhone. After you scan a QR code or enter a manual activation code, your phone downloads the eSIM profile from the network. This process can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes depending on your Wi-Fi speed and network server load.

iPhone specifically shows "Waiting for Activation" as a status during this process, and it can look alarming. In many cases, the eSIM is fully installed even while this message is displayed — the real test is whether data works when you reach your destination.

What "Activation" Actually Means

The "activation" step during installation refers to downloading and provisioning the eSIM profile on your device. It does not mean your data service is starting — that happens automatically when you arrive at your destination and connect to a local network.

Think of it like downloading an app: the download completes at home, but you use it later. The "Activating" status is the download phase.

Step-by-Step Fix

Follow these steps in order if you've been stuck on "Activating" for more than 15 minutes:

  1. Check your Wi-Fi connection: Open a browser and load any page to confirm you have an active internet connection. A weak or intermittent Wi-Fi signal is the most common cause of a stalled activation.
  2. Wait up to 15 minutes: Give it the full 15 minutes before taking any action. Activation servers can be slow under high load.
  3. Restart your device: A full restart (power off, power on) often unsticks a stalled activation. After restart, go to Settings > Cellular and check whether the eSIM line now appears.
  4. Check Settings > Cellular: After restarting, the eSIM may appear as installed even if the "Activating" notification is still showing. Look for the Roamix line in your cellular settings.
  5. Toggle the eSIM line off and back on: Tap your Roamix eSIM line in Settings > Cellular and toggle "Turn On This Line" off, wait 5 seconds, and toggle it back on.
  6. Switch to a different Wi-Fi network: If you're on a slow or restricted network (hotel Wi-Fi, office Wi-Fi with firewalls), try your home Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection from another device/SIM.

iPhone-Specific Behavior

On iPhone, the "Waiting for Activation" message can persist even after the eSIM profile is successfully installed. Apple's activation status display doesn't always update immediately.

The most reliable test: at your destination, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select the Roamix eSIM line. If you can browse the internet, the activation was successful — ignore the previous "Waiting for Activation" message.

How Long Does Installation Normally Take?

  • Best case (fast Wi-Fi, low server load): 30–90 seconds
  • Typical: 2–5 minutes
  • Slow conditions: up to 15 minutes
  • Something is wrong: over 30 minutes with no change after a restart

When to Contact Roamix Support

If you've waited 30 minutes, restarted your device, tried a different Wi-Fi network, and the eSIM still doesn't appear in Settings > Cellular — reach out to support@roamix.app with your order number and device model. We'll check the activation status on our end and re-issue if needed.

Don't wait until you're at the airport. If something seems wrong, contact us while you have reliable Wi-Fi and time to spare.
