Fix 'Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change'
On this page
If you're seeing one of these errors when installing your Roamix eSIM, you're not alone — and the fix is usually straightforward. "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change," "Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added," and "This Code Is No Longer Valid" are all generated by your phone or operating system, not by Roamix. That means the problem is at the device level, and the solution is almost always something you can fix yourself in a few minutes.
Understanding These Error Messages
These errors are not a sign that your Roamix plan is invalid or that something went wrong with your purchase. Your eSIM plan exists and is ready to use. What's happening is that your device encountered a specific obstacle during installation. Each error message points to a different cause, and fixing the right one will get you connected.
Error: "Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added"
What does "Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added" mean on iPhone or Android?
This error means your phone is carrier-locked. A carrier-locked (or SIM-locked) device is restricted by your original carrier to only accept their own SIM cards and eSIM profiles. Third-party eSIMs — including Roamix — are blocked at the hardware/software level until the phone is officially unlocked.
This is most common on phones purchased through a carrier on a payment plan, or phones subsidised as part of a contract.
How to check if your phone is locked to a carrier
On iPhone:
- Go to Settings → General → About
- Scroll down to find "Carrier Lock"
- "No SIM restrictions" means your phone is unlocked — Roamix should work
- If it lists a carrier name (e.g., "AT&T" or "EE"), your phone is locked to that carrier
On Android: The location varies by brand. Try Settings → About Phone → SIM Status, or dial *#7465625# on some Samsung devices. The most reliable test: insert a SIM card from a different carrier — if it doesn't connect, the phone is likely locked.
How to get your phone carrier-unlocked
Contact your original carrier directly and request an unlock. In most countries, carriers must unlock a phone for free once:
- Your contract has ended
- The device is fully paid off (no outstanding installments)
- Your account is in good standing
US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) are required by law to unlock eligible devices. UK carriers have similar obligations under Ofcom rules. The process typically takes 1–3 business days. Once unlocked, use the same Roamix QR code or manual details you received — they remain valid.
Error: "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"
What causes "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"?
This error has three distinct causes. Work through them in order:
Cause 1: Mobile data is turned off
Your device needs mobile data enabled to complete eSIM provisioning, even when you're installing over Wi-Fi. This trips up a surprising number of people.
Fix: Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks (Android) and make sure mobile data is switched on. Then return to the eSIM installation and try again.
Cause 2: Too many eSIM profiles stored on the device
iPhones can store up to 8 eSIM profiles but only have 2 active lines at once. Android limits vary by manufacturer. If your phone is at its storage limit, it will refuse to add a new profile.
Fix: Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android). Find any old eSIM profiles from previous travels or past providers that you no longer need, tap them, and select "Remove Cellular Plan" or "Delete eSIM." Once you have room, retry the Roamix installation.
Cause 3: Device is mid-installation from a previous attempt
If you started an installation before and it stalled or appeared to fail, your phone can get into an inconsistent state that blocks a fresh attempt.
Fix: Restart your device fully (power off completely, then back on). After restart, check Settings → Cellular — the eSIM may already be there even if the previous attempt looked like it failed. If not, attempt the installation fresh.
Error: "This Code Is No Longer Valid"
Why does my Roamix eSIM QR code say it's no longer valid?
eSIM QR codes are single-use by the technical standard. Once a code is scanned and processed — even if the visible installation didn't appear to complete — it is consumed and cannot be used again on any device. This is not a Roamix policy; it's how the eSIM specification works globally.
The most common scenario: you scanned the QR code once, saw an error or a brief "Waiting for Activation" screen, and assumed it failed. In reality, the code was partially or fully processed. Scanning it again triggers this error.
What to do: Contact support@roamix.app immediately with your order number and a description of what happened. Our team can check the activation status on our end. If the eSIM was never properly activated, we can arrange a re-issue.
General Tips for Successful eSIM Installation
These steps prevent most errors regardless of which error you've encountered:
- Use stable home Wi-Fi — avoid hotel Wi-Fi, airport Wi-Fi, or any network with a captive portal or restrictive firewall
- Disable your VPN before installing, and keep it off until the eSIM shows as active
- Try manual entry if QR scanning fails — your Roamix order details include an SM-DP+ address and an activation code that you can enter manually via Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Enter Details Manually
- Don't scan the QR code more than once — if the first attempt appeared to fail, restart your device and check your cellular settings before trying again
If you've worked through everything above and are still stuck, reach out to support@roamix.app with your order number, device model, OS version, and the exact error message. We'll get you sorted.
