eSIM Installation Errors — Complete Fix Guide

eSIM installation errors are specific and fixable. Each message your phone shows during a failed installation points to a distinct cause. This guide covers every common error, what it actually means, and exactly how to fix it.

Before Assuming It's a Bug — Run This Checklist First

Most installation failures are caused by one of these conditions. Check each one before looking up your specific error:

  • Is your phone unlocked? A carrier-locked phone will reject any third-party eSIM. Check before doing anything else.
  • Are you on stable Wi-Fi? A reliable home or office connection is essential. Hotel Wi-Fi, captive portals, and restricted networks often block eSIM activation servers.
  • Is mobile data enabled? Counter-intuitively, many devices need mobile data turned on to complete eSIM installation even over Wi-Fi. Go to Settings → Cellular and confirm it's on.
  • Is your VPN active? Disable any VPN before attempting installation — they can intercept or redirect activation traffic.
  • Is your OS up to date? Outdated iOS or Android versions can cause eSIM installation failures. Apply any pending system updates first.

If all five are confirmed and you're still seeing an error, find your specific message below.

Error: "Carrier Plans Cannot Be Added" (or "Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added")

Why won't my phone let me add a cellular plan?

This error means your phone is carrier-locked. Your original carrier has restricted the device to only accept their own SIM and eSIM profiles. Roamix eSIMs — and all third-party eSIMs — are blocked until the phone is officially unlocked.

How to check on iPhone: Settings → General → About → scroll to "Carrier Lock." If it says "No SIM restrictions," your phone is unlocked and Roamix will work.

How to check on Android: Settings → About Phone → SIM Status. Or insert a SIM from a different carrier to test.

How to fix it: Contact your original carrier and request an unlock. This is free in most countries once your contract is complete and the device is paid off. US carriers are legally required to unlock eligible devices. The process takes 1–3 business days. Once done, your Roamix QR code or manual details will work as normal.

Error: "Unable to Complete Cellular Plan Change"

This error has two main causes:

Cause 1: Too many eSIM profiles on the device

iPhones store up to 8 eSIM profiles (older models may store fewer). Android limits vary by manufacturer. If you've reached the limit, your phone will refuse to add a new profile.

Fix: Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android). Tap any old eSIM profiles you no longer use and select "Remove Cellular Plan" or "Delete eSIM." Then retry the Roamix installation.

Cause 2: Mobile data is turned off

Some devices require mobile data to be enabled during the provisioning step of eSIM installation, even on Wi-Fi.

Fix: Turn on mobile data in Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks (Android), then retry.

Applies to both causes: Restart your device fully before trying again. A full restart clears any stalled installation state from a previous attempt.

Error: "This Code Is No Longer Valid"

eSIM QR codes and activation codes are single-use. Once a code is processed by the network — even if the installation appeared to fail visually — it is consumed and cannot be reused on any device. This is not a Roamix policy; it is a fundamental aspect of the eSIM technical standard.

The most common cause: you scanned the QR code, saw a confusing screen or error, assumed it failed, and tried again. The first scan actually processed the code.

Fix: Contact support@roamix.app with your order number and explain what happened. Our team can check the activation status on our end. If the eSIM was never properly activated, we can arrange a re-issue.

Error: "eSIM Not Supported" (or "This Device Does Not Support eSIM")

This error means one of two things:

  1. Your device is not eSIM-capable. Not all phones support eSIM. Check whether your model is on the compatible devices list. Budget Android phones and many older devices do not have an eSIM chip.
  1. Your carrier has disabled eSIM on the device. Some carriers ship phones with eSIM functionality disabled at the software level even if the hardware supports it. Contact your carrier to confirm eSIM is enabled on your account and device.

Two Installation Paths: If QR Fails, Try Manual Entry

Your Roamix order details include two ways to install the eSIM — always try the second if the first doesn't work.

QR code method: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. Scan the QR code from your confirmation email. Stay on the installation screen until it completes.

Manual entry method: Your order details include an SM-DP+ address (a long URL) and an Activation Code. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Enter Details Manually. On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM → Enter Activation Code. Type both values carefully.

The two methods install the same eSIM profile through different protocols — one may succeed where the other didn't.

When to Contact Roamix Support

Contact support@roamix.app after you have:

  • Tried both QR code and manual entry methods
  • Worked through the checklist at the top of this guide
  • Restarted your device and tried a different Wi-Fi network

Include your order number, device model, OS version (e.g., iOS 17.4), and the exact error message you're seeing. The more context you provide, the faster we can diagnose and resolve your issue.
