Roamix eSIM Data Speeds — 5G, 4G LTE Explained
On this page
Roamix connects you to the fastest available local network at your destination — 5G where it's available and your device supports it, 4G LTE everywhere else. You don't configure anything; your device selects the best band automatically.
What Speeds Can I Expect?
Actual speeds depend on the local network, your location, and your device. Here are typical real-world ranges:
| Network | Peak Speed | Typical Real-World Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 5G (Sub-6GHz) | Up to 1 Gbps | 100–400 Mbps |
| 5G (mmWave, dense urban) | Up to 4 Gbps | 400–1,000 Mbps |
| 4G LTE | Up to 150 Mbps | 20–60 Mbps |
| 4G LTE-A (Advanced) | Up to 300 Mbps | 40–100 Mbps |
| 3G (HSPA+) | Up to 21 Mbps | 1–5 Mbps |
For context: streaming HD video on Netflix requires about 5 Mbps. A Zoom video call needs 3–4 Mbps. Even a moderate 4G LTE connection handles typical travel needs comfortably.
Does Roamix Support 5G?
Yes. Roamix supports 5G connectivity where:
- The local network at your destination has 5G coverage.
- Your device is 5G-capable (iPhone 12 and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 5 and later, etc.).
When both conditions are met, your device will connect to 5G automatically. If 5G isn't available in your area, your device falls back to 4G LTE seamlessly.
Not all countries have nationwide 5G. Major cities in Japan, South Korea, the US, the UK, Germany, and Australia have strong 5G coverage as of 2025. Check the coverage map on the Roamix plan detail page for your specific destination.
What Affects My Speed?
Several factors influence the speed you actually experience:
- Network congestion: Speed drops during peak hours (rush hour, major events) when many people use the same tower.
- Signal strength: Further from a tower means slower speeds. Indoors, underground, or in rural areas typically have weaker signal.
- Your device's modem: Newer flagship phones (iPhone 15, Samsung Galaxy S24) have better modems that achieve faster speeds than mid-range devices.
- Band selection: Some 5G bands (mmWave) are very fast but have short range. Sub-6GHz 5G is slower but has better coverage.
- Number of connected towers: In dense cities, your phone can connect to multiple towers simultaneously (carrier aggregation) for higher speeds.
Does Roamix Throttle Speeds?
Roamix does not apply any speed throttling to your data. You get access to the full speed of the local network your device connects to. If you experience slow speeds, the cause is the local network conditions, your signal strength, or your device — not any limitation Roamix imposes.
Some destinations may have network-level policies for international roaming data, but this is not controlled by Roamix.
How to Improve a Slow Connection
If speeds feel slower than expected, try these steps in order:
- Toggle Airplane Mode: Enable for 10 seconds, then disable. Forces your device to re-scan and reconnect to the strongest available network.
- Manually select a network carrier: On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection > turn off Automatic and select a carrier manually from the list. Try different carriers to find the fastest.
- Move to a better location: Go outdoors or near a window. Avoid underground areas and the centers of large buildings.
- Restart your device: A full reboot clears modem state and often improves connectivity.
- Check your data balance: If you've exhausted your plan, you'll have no connection or a very slow connection. Check remaining balance in the Roamix dashboard.
