Can I Use a Roamix eSIM in a Router?

Last updated

Yes, a Roamix eSIM should work in a router if the router has eSIM support and accepts third-party profiles. Roamix doesn't certify individual routers. A router with only a standard SIM slot can't download an eSIM. For most trips, your phone's hotspot is the simpler option.

Which Routers Support eSIM?

Examples include:

  • GL.iNet: Mudi 7, plus Spitz AX, Spitz Plus, Puli AX, and Mudi V2 with GL.iNet's physical eSIM card
  • Netgear: Nighthawk M7 (MH7150)
  • Teltonika: RUTX50 eSIM and RUT241 eSIM

See all routers with eSIM support for details. Similar model names can have different SIM options, so check the exact number.

How to Check Your Router

Before you buy, make sure that:

  1. The manufacturer lists your exact model as eSIM-capable.
  2. It accepts eSIMs from other providers.
  3. It's unlocked.
  4. You can add a QR code or activation code in its app or admin page.
  5. It can get online during setup.

How to Install Your eSIM

  1. Open your eSIM in the dashboard and find the QR code or the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
  2. Open the eSIM settings in the router's app or admin page.
  3. Upload the QR code or enter the details. If the router asks for one full code, use LPA:1$SMDP_ADDRESS$ACTIVATION_CODE.
  4. Enable the new profile and set it as the active SIM.
  5. Turn on data roaming, then restart the router if it doesn't connect.

If the router asks for an APN, use the one on your Roamix order. APNs are specific to each plan.

Don't delete the profile while troubleshooting. Most profiles can only be downloaded once.

Router or Phone Hotspot?

Use your phone's hotspot if you only need to connect a laptop or tablet. A router makes more sense if you need to connect lots of devices, want wired Ethernet, or don't want to rely on your phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a Roamix eSIM in a Wi-Fi router?

Yes, it should work if the router has an eSIM chip that accepts third-party profiles or takes a removable eSIM card. A router with only a standard SIM slot can't download an eSIM profile.

Does Roamix guarantee that my router will work?

Roamix doesn't certify individual routers, but a Roamix eSIM should work on routers that accept third-party profiles. Check your exact model before you buy.

Can I get a refund if my router doesn't work with the eSIM?

If you haven't installed the eSIM and it's within 14 days of purchase, you can request a refund. Once it's installed, failures caused by an unsupported device aren't covered.

Can I move my eSIM from my phone to a router?

Usually not. An installed eSIM stays on the device it was installed on, and most profiles can only be downloaded once. Buy a separate plan for the router, or share data from your phone with its hotspot.
