Tajikistan eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected from Dushanbe to the Pamir Highway

TL;DR

Tajikistan has four operators but Tcell dominates with the best 4G coverage across cities and the strongest signal in remote areas including the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor. 5G is not yet available. Major towns and main road corridors have 4G, but the Pamir Highway beyond Khorog, the Wakhan Corridor and vast mountain valleys are partially or entirely off-grid. A Roamix Tajikistan eSIM saves you the airport SIM hunt and connects you to the local network on arrival in Dushanbe. Budget 3 to 5 GB for a two-week trip and carry offline maps for any Pamir or Fann Mountains journey.

Key Takeaways

  • Tcell is the dominant carrier with the best 4G reach including coverage in Dushanbe, Khujand and the Pamir Highway corridor through Khorog.
  • A Roamix eSIM activates on the best available local network when you land at Dushanbe International Airport, avoiding the airport SIM queue.
  • 5G is not available in Tajikistan; plan your connectivity around 4G in towns and 2G or no signal in remote mountain areas.
  • The Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor are extremely remote with minimal or no signal beyond main towns; a satellite communicator is strongly recommended.
  • Cache offline maps in maps.me or OsmAnd before any Pamir or Fann Mountains journey, as even basic navigation is impossible off-grid.

How to Stay Connected in Tajikistan

Hotels and guesthouses in Dushanbe and Khujand generally have wifi. Along the Pamir Highway, homestays and simple guesthouses may have no wifi or unreliable connections. Mobile data is more practical in towns, and offline data is the only option on the road.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM

Most travellers

Instant activation on a local Tajik network in Dushanbe, no roaming bill and no SIM hunt at the airport.

Local physical SIM

Long stays or travellers needing a local number

Tcell SIMs are available at the airport and in Dushanbe shops. Requires a passport. A Tcell SIM can sometimes be obtained free through airport tourist services.

Pocket wifi

Group travel in cities

Rare in Tajikistan. Not practical for Pamir Highway travel where signal is absent for hundreds of kilometres.

Satellite communicator

Pamir Highway, Wakhan Corridor and remote trekking

A Garmin inReach or SPOT device is strongly recommended for any remote travel in Tajikistan, as mobile coverage cannot be relied on for emergency use.

For city travel and Fann Mountains trips, a Roamix eSIM provides the most convenient connectivity. For the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor, treat mobile data as a bonus where available and a satellite communicator as the essential safety device.

Mobile Networks in Tajikistan

Tajikistan has four operators, with Tcell holding roughly two-thirds of subscribers and the best rural and mountain reach. 4G is available in Dushanbe, Khujand, Kurgan-Tyube, Kulob, Khorog and several provincial towns. Outside these centres, coverage drops to 2G or zero. The Pamir Highway, Wakhan Corridor and Fann Mountains back-routes are the most remote areas in Central Asia, and connectivity planning is essential before departure. A Roamix Tajikistan eSIM connects you to the available local network on arrival, saving the hunt for a SIM at Dushanbe airport.

TcellBest Coverage

The dominant carrier with around two-thirds of subscribers, best 4G coverage across Dushanbe and provincial cities, and the widest rural reach including Khorog and the GBAO region of the Pamirs. Tcell launched 4G on 800 MHz (Band 20) giving stronger building penetration. Tourist police at Dushanbe airport sometimes provide a free 10-day tourist SIM.

Babilon MobileSecondary

Second operator by subscribers and the first to launch 4G in Tajikistan (2012 in Dushanbe). Good urban coverage in Dushanbe and Khujand but weaker rural reach than Tcell.

MegaFon TajikistanSecondary

Third carrier, recommended by some travellers for 4G performance in Dushanbe and the Zerafshan Valley near Penjikent. Weaker in the Pamirs and south compared to Tcell.

Typical Speeds

4G in towns delivers 5 to 20 Mbps. Rural and road corridor areas often fall to 2G speeds of 0.1 to 1 Mbps or lose signal entirely.

5G Status

5G is not available in Tajikistan. Plan your connectivity entirely around 4G in towns and offline downloads.

Tcell is the best choice for the Pamirs and Wakhan Corridor. MegaFon has a slight edge in the Zerafshan Valley around Penjikent. For Dushanbe city travel, any of the three main carriers works adequately. Download offline maps in maps.me or OsmAnd for the entire Pamir Highway before leaving Dushanbe.

Tajikistan is dominated by the Pamir mountain range with peaks over 7,000 m. The Pamir Highway (M41) between Khorog and Murghab has signal only at the towns; long stretches of 300 to 400 km between them are completely off-grid. The Wakhan Corridor is off-grid east of Ishkashim. Fann Mountains backcountry trails, high passes and remote Zerafshan valleys have no signal. Always inform someone of your itinerary and carry a satellite communicator for any remote mountain route.

Tajik networks use 2G (GSM 900/1800), 3G (UMTS 900/2100) and 4G (LTE Band 20 on 800 MHz for Tcell). Most modern unlocked smartphones support these bands. Check that your device supports B20 for the best Tcell 4G performance.

Data Usage Guide

Data needs in Tajikistan are lower than in most destinations because signal is unavailable for much of the most adventurous travel. Use connectivity in Dushanbe and Khujand to download everything you need for the road ahead.

Download maps.me or OsmAnd offline packages for the entire Pamir Highway corridor, Fann Mountains and Wakhan Corridor before leaving Dushanbe. These are large downloads; do it on wifi at your hotel.

Social media platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp have at times been throttled or temporarily blocked during sensitive periods. A VPN is recommended as a precaution for travellers who rely on these services.

VPN Required:No

WhatsApp

Generally available, though occasional throttling has been reported during political events. A VPN is a useful backup.

FaceTime

Works normally over 4G data in towns with adequate signal.

How to Set Up a Tajikistan eSIM

A Roamix Tajikistan eSIM is best installed over wifi before departure. It activates automatically when you connect to a Tajik network on arrival in Dushanbe, so you land already online.

Works on eSIM-capable phones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models. The phone must be carrier unlocked.

  1. 1

Buy your plan on the Roamix Tajikistan eSIM page before departure.

  2. 2

Scan the QR code or tap to install the eSIM over wifi at home.

  3. 3

Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM as primary for calls and texts.

  4. 4

Enable data roaming for the Roamix line only.

  5. 5

Land in Tajikistan and the eSIM connects automatically to a local carrier.

APN Note

Roamix sets the correct APN automatically on most devices. If data does not start, apply the APN from your activation email and toggle airplane mode.

Troubleshooting

No data on arrival usually means data roaming is off for the Roamix line. Check settings, select the network manually and restart. In Dushanbe, Tcell is typically the strongest network to select manually.

Arrival Checklist

1

Confirm your Roamix eSIM has connected to a Tajik network before leaving the arrivals hall at Dushanbe International Airport.

2

Download offline maps in maps.me or OsmAnd for Dushanbe, the Pamir Highway and Fann Mountains before your first day.

3

If your itinerary includes the Pamir Highway or Wakhan Corridor, obtain your GBAO permit and download your documentation before departure.

4

Withdraw TJS cash from ATMs at the airport or in central Dushanbe, as card payment is rare outside the capital.

5

Check current road conditions for the M41 Pamir Highway over Roamix data before setting out, as rockslides and river crossings can close sections.

How locals communicate

Tajiks use Telegram as the primary messaging app, with WhatsApp also common. Younger urban residents use Instagram extensively. Russian is a practical second language for navigation and negotiation outside Dushanbe.

Keep your home SIM active for SMS two-factor authentication while using the Roamix line for data. Telegram works reliably over the Roamix data connection in towns.

Visa & Entry for Tajikistan

Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tajikistan. An e-Visa is available online for citizens of over 100 countries and is the most common route. Citizens visiting the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), which includes the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor, must also obtain a separate GBAO permit, available online alongside the e-Visa application.

Visa on arrivalNot available

eVisa / ETA

An e-Visa is available at evisa.tj and typically costs USD 30 to 50. Processing takes 2 to 3 working days. Apply at least two weeks before departure. Add the GBAO permit option during the application if you plan to travel to the Pamirs, as it cannot be obtained later.

Money & Payments in Tajikistan

Tajikistan uses the Tajik somoni (TJS). Cash is essential outside Dushanbe. USD is widely accepted alongside TJS in tourist areas, hotels and Pamir Highway guesthouses. Change money at banks or licensed exchange offices.

Cash vs Card

Card acceptance is limited to major Dushanbe hotels, some restaurants and a few supermarkets. ATMs exist in Dushanbe and Khujand but are absent in the Pamirs. Withdraw enough cash for the entire Pamir Highway journey before leaving Dushanbe.

ATMs

ATMs in Dushanbe and Khujand dispense TJS and sometimes USD. Use Orienbank or Eskhata Bank ATMs for reliability. There are no ATMs on the Pamir Highway between Khorog and the Kyrgyz border.

Payment Apps

International payment apps are not widely accepted. Cash and bank transfer are the dominant payment methods. Bring USD in small denominations as backup.

Daily Budget

Tajikistan is very affordable. Budget travellers on homestays spend 30 to 50 USD a day, including a driver hire share. Dushanbe mid-range hotels and restaurants cost 60 to 100 USD a day.

Data cost: International roaming in Tajikistan is expensive. A Roamix Tajikistan eSIM provides local network access at a fraction of home-carrier international roaming rates.

Getting Around Tajikistan

Tajikistan has limited public transport outside the main urban corridors. Shared taxis (marshrutkas) are the primary inter-city transport. The Pamir Highway requires a 4WD vehicle and an experienced driver. Domestic flights on Tajik Air connect Dushanbe with Khujand and the weather-dependent Khorog route.

Shared taxis (marshrutkas)

The most practical way to travel between towns. Depart when full from taxi stands near main bazaars. No apps or online booking; arrange in person. Use Roamix data to research fares and departure points in advance.

Pamir Highway 4WD hire

Hire a 4WD vehicle with a driver in Dushanbe or Khorog for the Pamir Highway. Prices and availability vary. Research operators over Roamix data and book from home or in Dushanbe before the route, as good drivers are booked out in summer.

Domestic flights

Tajik Air connects Dushanbe with Khujand and Khorog. Khorog flights are frequently cancelled due to weather. Check flight status over Roamix data before travelling to the airport.

City transport in Dushanbe

Shared minibuses and some taxis operate in Dushanbe. Yandex Taxi has limited availability in the capital. Use Roamix data to navigate and communicate with drivers.

Regions & Travel

Tajikistan is one of the most spectacular and adventurous destinations in Central Asia, combining the dramatic scenery of the Pamir Highway, the ancient Silk Road history of Khujand and Penjikent, the stunning turquoise lakes of the Fann Mountains and authentic homestay culture. A Roamix eSIM keeps communications working in towns and cities while you plan each leg of the journey.

Best time to visit: June to September for the Pamir Highway and Fann Mountains when passes are clear of snow. April and May for lower altitude Silk Road sites and Dushanbe. October for autumn colour and quieter trails. Winter is harsh, with most high passes closed November to May.

Dushanbe and Hissar Valley

The wide, leafy capital of Tajikistan combines a pleasant central boulevard, the remarkable National Museum of Tajikistan, the 16th-century Hissar fortress 30 km to the west and the lively Mehrgon bazaar, making it a relaxed base for trip planning and acclimatisation.

Signal: Best connectivity in Tajikistan. All three main carriers provide reliable 4G across central Dushanbe and along the main Hissar road. The capital is the only city in Tajikistan with consistent LTE speeds.

Khujand and the North (Sughd)

Tajikistan's second city and the largest city in the fertile Fergana Valley, where a massive indoor bazaar, ancient Khujand Fortress and a pleasant riverside promenade contrast with the surrounding agricultural plains near the Uzbek and Kyrgyz borders.

Signal: Good 4G across central Khujand and along the main Sughd valley roads. Rural areas between Khujand and the Shahriston Pass can be patchy, especially on non-Tcell networks.

Fann Mountains

A compact alpine jewel in the western Pamirs, where brilliant turquoise and sapphire lakes including Iskanderkul and the Seven Lakes sit in steep valleys below peaks reaching 5,500 m, offering the most accessible high-mountain trekking in Tajikistan.

Signal: MegaFon and Tcell reach the main Fann valley floors and the town of Penjikent. Above the valley floors and on the hiking trails between lakes, signal disappears. Download maps and emergency contacts in Penjikent before any multi-day trek.

Pamir Highway (M41)

The second highest international highway in the world, running 2,000 km from Dushanbe through Khorog to Osh in Kyrgyzstan along the Afghan border at elevations of 3,000 to 4,655 m, the ultimate Central Asian road journey through remote Wakhi, Pamiri and Kyrgyz communities.

Signal: Tcell provides 4G in Khorog (the GBAO capital) and 2G along portions of the main M41 corridor. Murghab in the high Pamirs has basic Tcell signal. Between towns, including the stretch from Khorog to Murghab (350 km) and Murghab to Karakul (150 km), there is little to no signal. A satellite communicator is not optional on this route.

Wakhan Corridor

The narrow strip of Afghan territory that created Tajikistan's southeastern panhandle, where the Wakhan River road runs parallel to Afghanistan through ancient forts, hot springs and Buddhist ruins in one of the most isolated valleys on Earth.

Signal: Tcell signal is present in Ishkashim and a few larger Wakhan villages. East of Ishkashim the corridor becomes progressively off-grid. The Afghan side is visible across the river but no Tajik carrier provides coverage for most of the corridor.

Seven Lakes (Haft Kul)

natural wonder

Fann Mountains

Seven glacial lakes stacked up a narrow Fann valley, each a different shade from turquoise to deep blue, surrounded by dramatic 5,000 m peaks, reachable in a one to three day hike or 4WD drive from Penjikent.

Signal: MegaFon and Tcell reach Shing village at the entrance to the Seven Lakes valley. Signal fades progressively as you ascend through the chain of lakes. The upper lakes at Nofin and Marguzor have no signal.

Research guesthouse options in Shing and Artuch over Roamix data in Penjikent before the drive, as there are no booking platforms for these family-run homestays and Telegram messages to hosts are the only advance communication.

Iskanderkul Lake

alpine lake

Fann Mountains

The most famous lake in the Fann Mountains, named after Alexander the Great who reputedly camped here during his Central Asian campaign, with a dramatic mountain backdrop and a small seasonal tourist camp on the shore.

Signal: Limited Tcell signal at the main guesthouse area by the lake. The surrounding trails and the small Fann waterfall above the lake have no signal.

The road to Iskanderkul branches off the Dushanbe to Khujand highway. Download directions and a map of the Fann access roads over Roamix data in Dushanbe before the drive, as signage is minimal.

Hissar Fortress

historic site

Hissar Valley, near Dushanbe

A 16th-century mud-brick fortified gateway and emir's summer palace complex in a fertile valley below the Gissar Range, the most accessible historic site near the capital with an outdoor museum and a still-active madrassa.

Signal: Good Tcell and Babilon Mobile 4G at the fortress and the adjacent museum complex, 30 km west of central Dushanbe along the main road.

Hissar is easily combined with a Dushanbe day trip. Use Roamix data to navigate to the fortress and check the museum opening times before departure from the capital.

Yamchun Fortress and Bibi Fatima Hot Springs

historic site

Wakhan Corridor

A 2,000-year-old Silk Road fortress perched dramatically on a cliff above the Wakhan River opposite the Hindu Kush, combined with natural thermal pools at the sacred hot springs below, the most rewarding day trip from the Pamir Highway.

Signal: Very limited or no signal at Yamchun and the hot springs. The nearest reliable Tcell signal is in Ishkashim. Download maps and emergency information before driving the Wakhan road east of Ishkashim.

The Wakhan road requires a sturdy vehicle and local knowledge. Contact your driver and arrange the full day excursion over Roamix data in Ishkashim before driving east into the corridor.

Murghab

remote town

High Pamirs

The highest market town on the Pamir Highway at 3,612 m, a Kyrgyz community on the vast high plateau of the Eastern Pamirs where yak herders ride past Soviet-era buildings and the altitude ensures blue skies and silence.

Signal: Tcell provides basic 2G to 4G signal in Murghab itself, the only town between Khorog (350 km west) and the Kyrgyz border at Karakul. Use the signal window in Murghab to check your next route segment, download maps and send updates.

Murghab is the critical resupply and connectivity stop between Khorog and the Kyrgyz border. Use your Roamix data window here to check border crossing status at Kara-Say, download the next map segments and communicate with contacts.

Khorog

regional capital

Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast

The vibrant capital of the Pamiri people, with a shaded botanical garden overlooking the Pyanj River toward Afghanistan, a lively Saturday market drawing Pamiri traders from surrounding villages, and the last proper town on the Tajik Pamir Highway.

Signal: Tcell provides the best 4G in Khorog, the capital of GBAO and the last city with reliable connectivity before the high Pamirs. Use every opportunity to download, communicate and prepare before leaving Khorog.

Khorog is the last chance to stock up on supplies, check vehicle condition and download offline maps for the entire Khorog to Osh corridor over Roamix data. Make sure your GBAO permit is in order before proceeding.

Penjikent Ancient City

archaeological site

Zerafshan Valley

The well-excavated ruins of a 5th to 8th-century Sogdian merchant city on the ancient Silk Road, with a fascinating museum of recovered murals and artefacts that rival any Central Asian collection, located near the Uzbek border town of Samarkand.

Signal: Good MegaFon and Tcell 4G in modern Penjikent town. The ancient city ruins 1 km from the town centre have basic outdoor signal.

Penjikent is the base for Fann Mountains access and a worthwhile Silk Road stop. Use Roamix data to book a guesthouse in Penjikent from Dushanbe and check the museum opening schedule before the drive.

Karakul Lake

alpine lake

High Pamirs

A vast, cold and strikingly beautiful volcanic crater lake at nearly 4,000 m on the Pamir Highway, surrounded by brown plateau and snow-capped mountains with a tiny Kyrgyz village on its shore, one of the most surreal landscapes in Central Asia.

Signal: No mobile signal at Karakul. The lake sits at 3,914 m on the Pamir Plateau and is too remote for any carrier to cover reliably. Inform someone of your plans before arriving at Murghab and download everything there.

Karakul is day trip distance from Murghab. Download the Karakul map area and ensure your Garmin emergency contact is set before leaving Murghab for the lake. There is no help available within many kilometres of the shore.

Istaravshan Old Town

historic town

Sughd Province

One of Central Asia's oldest continuously inhabited cities with 2,500 years of history, featuring a reconstructed fortress, craftsmen carving alabaster and stitching traditional Tajik embroidery in workshops and a covered bazaar still working as it has for centuries.

Signal: Good Tcell and Babilon Mobile 4G across Istaravshan and the old town bazaar area, 90 km south of Khujand on the main road.

Istaravshan makes an excellent day trip from Khujand. Use Roamix data to navigate to the old town and research the craft workshops producing traditional skull caps (tubeteika) and alabaster carvings before arrival.

Vrang and the Wakhan Petroglyphs

archaeological site

Wakhan Corridor

A collection of ancient Buddhist stupas, a ruined Buddhist monastery and rock carvings dating back 2,000 years on a hillside above the Wakhan Valley, with views across to the Afghan villages and Hindu Kush peaks on the other side of the river.

Signal: No mobile signal at Vrang. This is deep in the off-grid Wakhan section east of Ishkashim. Carry a satellite communicator and full provisions.

Research the Vrang site history and download offline maps for the Wakhan road over Roamix data in Khorog or Ishkashim. The drive to Vrang requires planning food, fuel and accommodation along the road as there are no services.

Local Tips for Tajikistan

Language

Tajik (a variant of Persian/Farsi) is the official language, with Russian widely spoken by educated urban residents and older generations. In the Pamirs, Pamiri languages (Shughni, Wakhi) are primary. Basic Russian or Tajik phrases are very useful outside Dushanbe.

Tipping

Tipping is not a formal expectation in Tajikistan. Paying a fair and agreed price is more important. For guides and drivers on the Pamir Highway, a gratuity of 5 to 10 USD per day is a generous gesture.

Food & Dining

Tajik cuisine centres on plov (rice pilaf with meat and carrots), shurpo (lamb soup), samsa (baked pastries) and fresh nan bread. Pamir homestays serve simple but filling homegrown meals. Pomegranates and apricots are exceptional in season.

Transport

Negotiate taxi and shared transport fares before departure in Dushanbe. For the Pamir Highway, a fixed driver hire price for the full route is standard. Use Roamix data in Dushanbe to research current fair rates before negotiating.

Safety & Health in Tajikistan

Tajikistan is generally safe for tourists in cities and on the main tourist routes. The Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor are physically demanding and extremely remote, requiring proper preparation, self-sufficiency and communication equipment. Check your government travel advisory before booking.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active in Dushanbe and Khorog to receive emergency communications and check road closures. For the Pamir Highway and Wakhan, carry a satellite communicator with a pre-registered emergency contact plan. Do not rely on mobile connectivity for emergency use in the mountains.

Health Note

Altitude sickness is a real risk on the Pamir Highway above 3,500 m. Acclimatise in Dushanbe before ascending rapidly. Medical facilities are extremely limited beyond Dushanbe and Khorog. Carry a comprehensive first aid kit and personal medications for the entire trip. Travel insurance with emergency evacuation coverage is essential.

Water Safety

Tap water is not safe to drink outside major hotels in Dushanbe. Drink bottled water or use a filter and purification tablets throughout the country, especially on the Pamir Highway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tajikistan eSIM, connectivity, and travel

What is the best eSIM for Tajikistan?

Roamix is a strong choice for Tajikistan because it connects to local networks including Tcell, which has the widest 4G coverage across cities and the best reach in remote areas like the Pamir Highway. You activate before you fly and land already online at Dushanbe International Airport.

Do I need a SIM card for Tajikistan?

You do not need a physical SIM. A Roamix Tajikistan eSIM gives you local 4G data on arrival in Dushanbe without a SIM hunt at the airport, at a fraction of typical international roaming costs.

Does Tajikistan have 5G?

No. 5G is not available in Tajikistan. Plan your connectivity around 4G in urban areas and main road corridors, and offline downloaded maps for the Pamir Highway and Fann Mountains.

Will my eSIM work on the Pamir Highway?

Tcell provides 4G signal in Khorog and Murghab and 2G in some corridor stretches. Between these towns, covering hundreds of kilometres, there is no mobile signal on any carrier. Download offline maps in maps.me or OsmAnd before leaving Dushanbe and carry a satellite communicator for emergencies.

How do I set up an eSIM for Tajikistan?

Buy a Roamix Tajikistan plan, install the eSIM over wifi before departure, then enable data roaming on the Roamix line. It connects automatically to Tcell or another available carrier when you land at Dushanbe International Airport.

Can I use WhatsApp and Telegram in Tajikistan?

Telegram works reliably in Tajikistan and is the most used messaging app. WhatsApp is generally available but has been throttled during sensitive periods. A VPN is a useful precaution if you rely heavily on WhatsApp.

Do I need a visa for Tajikistan?

Most nationalities require a visa. An e-Visa is available at evisa.tj and typically costs USD 30 to 50 with a 2 to 3 working day processing time. If you plan to visit the Pamirs, add the GBAO permit during your e-Visa application.

What is a GBAO permit and do I need one?

A GBAO permit is required to enter the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast, which includes the Pamir Highway, Wakhan Corridor and Khorog. Add it to your e-Visa application at evisa.tj. It costs a small additional fee and is required at checkpoints entering the region.

How much data do I need for a trip to Tajikistan?

A two-week trip including the Pamir Highway needs 4 to 6 GB. Most of the data is used in Dushanbe and Khorog downloading offline maps. The Pamir Highway itself consumes very little data because there is minimal signal for hundreds of kilometres.

Is airport wifi at Dushanbe International Airport reliable?

Terminal wifi at Dushanbe Airport is limited and unreliable. Activate your Roamix eSIM before landing so you have data connectivity in the arrivals hall to download offline maps and communicate with your accommodation immediately.

What is the emergency number in Tajikistan?

The general emergency number is 112. Police is 102, ambulance is 103 and fire is 101. In the Pamirs, where mobile coverage is absent, 112 will not connect. A satellite communicator is the only reliable emergency device on the Pamir Highway.

Is Tajikistan expensive for tourists?

Tajikistan is one of the most affordable destinations in Central Asia. Budget travellers on homestays spend 30 to 50 USD a day including a shared driver. The Pamir Highway is an exception where driver hire and permits add to the cost but remain reasonable by international standards.

What currency should I bring to Tajikistan?

Bring a mix of Tajik somoni (TJS) and USD in small denominations. Cash is essential outside Dushanbe. There are no ATMs on the Pamir Highway between Khorog and the Kyrgyz border, so withdraw enough before leaving Dushanbe.

What apps are best for travelling in Tajikistan?

maps.me and OsmAnd for offline maps with Pamir Highway coverage, Telegram for communicating with local guesthouses and drivers, and Google Translate for Tajik and Russian. All three work best when downloaded over Roamix data in Dushanbe before leaving for remote areas.
