Malaysia eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected from KL to Borneo
Malaysia has one of Southeast Asia's strongest mobile networks, with CelcomDigi (formed by the 2022 merger of Celcom and Digi) operating the broadest nationwide coverage including Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. Maxis/Hotlink leads on premium urban performance; U Mobile is the competitive budget option in cities. 5G rollout uses the DNB single-network model shared by all operators. Get your Malaysia eSIMMobile Networks in Malaysia
Malaysia's mobile landscape was restructured by the 2022 merger of Celcom Axiata and Digi Telecommunications into CelcomDigi, now the market leader by subscriber count and the operator with the broadest national coverage, particularly in East Malaysia (Borneo). Maxis, through its consumer brand Hotlink, maintains premium urban coverage in Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Johor Bahru with excellent 5G performance. U Mobile is the fourth operator with strong city coverage and very competitive prepaid data pricing. 5G is deployed through the national Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) wholesale model, making 5G signal accessible via all four operators on the same towers.
Broadest 4G coverage in Malaysia including Sabah, Sarawak and remote peninsular areas. Best choice for travel across both peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Very competitive tourist data bundles.
Premium urban performance in KL, Penang, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu. Outstanding 5G in Kuala Lumpur city centre. Best for KL-focused itineraries and multi-country plans.
Excellent value urban 4G in KL and peninsular cities. Strong competitor in the city market; smaller footprint in Borneo and rural areas.
Typical Speeds
5G in KL delivers 50 to 200 Mbps. Urban 4G averages 20 to 60 Mbps. Rural 4G in peninsular Malaysia is typically 10 to 30 Mbps. Borneo jungle lodges may be 3G.
5G Status
5G is live in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and expanding nationwide via the DNB shared tower network.
For a KL and Penang focused trip, Maxis gives the best urban 5G. For travel that includes Borneo, CelcomDigi's broader footprint in Sabah and Sarawak is the advantage. A Roamix eSIM automatically selects the strongest available network at each location.
4G coverage is excellent in all peninsular Malaysian cities, along major highways and on the main tourist islands (Langkawi, Penang, Perhentian). Deep jungle areas in Taman Negara, Endau-Rompin and the Borneo interior (Kinabalu Park backcountry, Danum Valley, Mulu) are 3G or offline. Some Perhentian Island and Redang beach huts have 3G only. Download offline maps before jungle and island trips.
Malaysian networks use Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 28 (700 MHz) for 4G LTE, and sub-6 GHz (3500 MHz) for 5G. Any modern unlocked phone from iPhone 12 onward is 5G-capable in Malaysia.

Food & Dining
Malaysian food is a contender for the world's best national cuisine: nasi lemak (coconut rice with sambal, anchovy, peanuts and egg), char kway teow (stir-fried flat noodles), roti canai (flaky bread with curry), Penang asam laksa, rendang, satay, cendol (shaved ice dessert) and Hainanese chicken rice. The country's multi-ethnic Chinese-Malay-Indian food culture creates an unparalleled hawker food tradition. Penang George Town and KL's Jalan Alor are the twin hawker food capitals.
Transport
Grab is the answer to almost every transport question in Malaysian cities. The KLIA Ekspres is the fastest airport link to KL. For highway driving, the Touch 'n Go eWallet handles all toll booths cashlessly. Driving is on the left.

Safety & Health in Malaysia
Malaysia is a safe country for tourists with low rates of violent crime. Standard urban precautions apply: be aware of bag snatching on motorcycles in KL Chinatown and Bukit Bintang at night; keep phone and bags secure. Borneo is very safe. Natural hazards: Mount Kinabalu trekking requires fitness and acclimatisation; Borneo rivers can rise rapidly in rain.
Keep your Roamix eSIM active throughout Malaysia. In Borneo jungle lodges, your eSIM may be the only reliable way to call emergency services or communicate with your tour operator. Save your operator and park ranger contacts before entering the jungle.
Health Note
No mandatory vaccinations for most nationalities. Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are recommended. Japanese Encephalitis vaccination is recommended for extended rural Borneo stays. Dengue fever is present in urban areas; use insect repellent. Medical facilities are excellent in KL, Penang and KK.
Water Safety
Tap water in KL and major cities is treated; most locals drink it but many prefer bottled water. Outside major cities, bottled water is recommended.
