Armenia eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected in the Land of Monasteries

TL;DR

Armenia has three competitive mobile operators, Viva-MTS, Team Telecom Armenia and Ucom, all offering good 4G LTE coverage in Yerevan and the major provincial towns. All three have 24-hour kiosks at Zvartnots International Airport. Ucom leads on 5G in Yerevan and is generally the most budget-friendly option. Viva-MTS has the widest rural and regional coverage. Coverage drops in the remote north, deep gorges and the border regions near Azerbaijan. A Roamix Armenia eSIM connects you on landing at Zvartnots and is particularly useful for road trips between monasteries, where offline maps are essential for the unmarked mountain access roads. Budget 5 to 8 GB for a ten-day trip.

Key Takeaways

  • All three operators (Viva-MTS, Team Telecom, Ucom) have 24-hour SIM kiosks at Zvartnots Airport, but a pre-loaded Roamix eSIM skips the queue entirely.
  • Ucom leads on 5G in Yerevan and offers the most budget-friendly data plans. Viva-MTS has the widest regional coverage for monastery road trips.
  • Avoid all travel near the Azerbaijan border, which is an active conflict zone. Check current US State Department or UK FCDO advisories before travel.
  • The GG and Yandex Go ride-hailing apps require an active data connection and are the safest way to get around Yerevan.
  • Armenian cuisine and brandy are outstanding. A connected phone helps navigate Yerevan's restaurant scene and find off-the-beaten-track khinkali and khorovats spots.

How to Stay Connected in Armenia

Yerevan has very good cafe and hotel wifi in the city centre and Cascade district. Guesthouses and small hotels in provincial towns and monastery villages often have slow or unreliable wifi. Mobile data from Roamix is more dependable on the road.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM

Most visitors

Connects to Viva-MTS, Team Telecom or Ucom on landing at EVN. No SIM counter queue, no physical card, and coverage across the country's main tourist routes from Yerevan to Tatev.

Local physical SIM from the airport

Budget travellers who prefer a local number

All three operators have 24-hour counters at EVN with competitive prepaid packages. Bring your passport. Ucom offers the best data value and Viva-MTS gives the widest regional coverage.

Hotel and cafe wifi

Yerevan city centre use only

Yerevan city wifi is generally good. Unreliable or slow outside the capital. Use as a supplement, not a replacement for mobile data on monastery road trips.

Carrier roaming

Very short airport transit or emergency

International carrier roaming to Armenia from European operators can be expensive. Most EU operators do not include Armenia in their inclusive roaming zones.

For most visitors to Armenia, a Roamix eSIM is the most convenient option, connecting before the luggage carousel and providing coverage for both the vibrant Yerevan restaurant scene and the remote monastery access roads.

Mobile Networks in Armenia

Armenia has a competitive mobile market with three operators that closely match each other in urban coverage. Viva-MTS commands the largest market share and the best rural reach. Team Telecom Armenia (formerly Beeline Armenia) offers solid midrange pricing and reliable regional coverage. Ucom leads on 5G deployment and value data pricing. All three operators have 24-hour counters at Zvartnots International Airport. A Roamix Armenia eSIM connects to the best available local network from the moment you land, skipping all counter queues.

Viva-MTSBest Coverage

Largest operator in Armenia by subscribers and geographic coverage. Best reach into rural areas, mountain villages and regional roads. The recommended choice for road trips through the Debed Canyon, Vayots Dzor wine country and the southern province toward Tatev.

Team Telecom ArmeniaSecondary

Solid 4G in Yerevan, Gyumri and the main provincial centres. Reliable midrange coverage across the country's main tourist routes. Good data pricing and consistent performance in the major monasteries and town areas.

UcomSecondary

Leads the 5G rollout in Yerevan with the fastest urban speeds and the most competitive data pricing. Best choice for a Yerevan-focused visit. Coverage in rural areas is slightly behind Viva-MTS.

Typical Speeds

Yerevan 4G delivers 30 to 80 Mbps. 5G in central Yerevan can reach 100 to 200 Mbps. Provincial 4G runs 10 to 30 Mbps in covered areas.

5G Status

5G is live in Yerevan on Ucom and Viva-MTS. Expansion is ongoing to Gyumri (Armenia's second city) and Vanadzor.

All three airport SIM counters are 24-hour and competitive. Ucom offers the best value data packages in Yerevan. For a monastery road trip, Viva-MTS gives the widest reach outside the capital. A Roamix eSIM that covers all three networks simplifies the choice.

Deep gorges in the Debed Canyon, the border regions near Azerbaijan (Tavush Province east and all areas near Nagorno-Karabakh) and the high-altitude roads above 2,500 metres have limited to no signal on any carrier. The road from Goris south to Kapan and the Tatev monastery access road can be intermittent between town centres.

Armenian networks use LTE bands B1, B3, B7, B8, B20 and 5G in n78. Modern unlocked phones from iPhone XS onward and recent Android models are compatible.

Data Usage Guide

Data needs in Armenia are shaped by the country's distinctive monastery road trip culture, where GPS navigation on unmarked mountain access roads and offline trail maps are essential tools, combined with the Yerevan city experience of restaurant discovery and ride-hailing.

Download offline maps for Vayots Dzor, the Debed Canyon and the Tatev road in Yerevan before your monastery road trips. The monastery access tracks are rarely named on street maps and require satellite-view navigation.

How to Set Up a Armenia eSIM

A Roamix Armenia eSIM is best installed at home over wifi before departure. It connects automatically to Viva-MTS, Team Telecom or Ucom on landing at Zvartnots, giving you maps and the GG taxi app ready before the luggage belt.

Works on eSIM-capable phones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models. The phone must be carrier unlocked.

  1. 1

Buy your Armenia plan on the Roamix Armenia eSIM page before departure.

  2. 2

Install the eSIM over wifi by scanning the QR code or using the direct activation link.

  3. 3

Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM as primary for calls and texts.

  4. 4

Enable data roaming for the Roamix line only.

  5. 5

Land at Zvartnots International Airport and the eSIM connects automatically to a local network.

APN Note

Roamix sets the correct APN automatically. If data does not start after landing, toggle airplane mode and restart.

Troubleshooting

If the eSIM shows registered but data is absent, confirm data roaming is enabled for the Roamix SIM in settings and manually select Viva-MTS from the available network list.

Arrival Checklist

1

Confirm your Roamix eSIM connects to Viva-MTS, Team Telecom or Ucom before leaving the arrivals hall at Zvartnots International Airport (EVN).

2

Download the GG or Yandex Go app and set up a payment method before landing so you can book a taxi from arrivals without needing the airport kiosk cabs.

3

Download offline maps for Yerevan and the monastery roads (Khor Virap, Noravank, Tatev, Geghard) before leaving the airport.

4

Exchange a small amount of currency to AMD at the airport, as local markets, roadside food and smaller restaurants prefer cash. ATMs are plentiful in Yerevan.

5

Note the emergency number is 112. Keep your Roamix eSIM active at all times, especially when driving toward the Turkish or Iranian border regions.

How locals communicate

Armenians use WhatsApp, Viber and standard SMS as the main messaging platforms. Viber is particularly popular in Armenia and among the Armenian diaspora for international calls. Russian-speaking locals also use Telegram extensively.

Install both WhatsApp and Viber over Roamix data before venturing outside Yerevan, as many rural guesthouses and drivers prefer Viber for contact.

Airports in Armenia

EVN

Zvartnots International Airport

Yerevan

Free wifi throughout the terminal. Viva-MTS, Team Telecom and Ucom all have 24-hour SIM kiosks in the arrivals hall with competitive prepaid packages.

All three operators at EVN have 24-hour counters with good prepaid rates, but the queues can build during peak late-night arrivals. A Roamix eSIM pre-loaded at home connects automatically on landing and lets you book a GG or Yandex Go taxi while waiting for your luggage, without a queue.

LWN

Shirak International Airport

Gyumri

Basic wifi in the terminal. Viva-MTS 4G is available at the airport. This is Armenia's second international airport with limited scheduled flights.

LWN handles some charter and seasonal flights to Russia and the Armenian diaspora destinations. Have your Roamix eSIM active before arrival to navigate from Gyumri toward Haghpat, Sanahin and the Debed Canyon, as Gyumri is the northern gateway for monastery road trips.

Visa & Entry for Armenia

Armenia has an open and welcoming visa policy. Citizens of Russia, EU countries, the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and many other nationalities can enter Armenia without a visa or receive a visa on arrival for stays up to 180 days. Most other nationalities can apply for an e-visa online.

Visa on arrivalAvailable

eVisa / ETA

E-visa available at evisa.mfa.am for most nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry. The e-visa costs 60 USD for a 21-day single-entry visa. Visa-free nationalities include EU member states, US, UK, Canada, Australia and many others for stays up to 180 days.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay in Armenia. A 6-month validity beyond the entry date is recommended for connecting onward travel.

Onward ticket

Proof of onward travel may be requested but is rarely checked strictly for visa-exempt nationalities.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active to access your e-visa confirmation and accommodation booking at Zvartnots immigration.

Entry requirements can change. Confirm current requirements with the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at mfa.am before travel.

Money & Payments in Armenia

The Armenian dram (AMD) is the official currency. USD and EUR are easily exchangeable at the many small exchange offices (exchange) throughout Yerevan's city centre. Rates at airport exchange desks are significantly worse. Exchange in the city for better rates.

Cash vs Card

Cards are widely accepted at hotels, supermarkets and restaurants in Yerevan. Markets, rural guesthouses and monastery village shops are cash only. Always carry some AMD when leaving Yerevan for a day trip.

ATMs

ATMs are plentiful throughout Yerevan and in most provincial town centres. Use HSBC, Ameriabank or VTB Armenia ATMs for the most reliable access. Outside major towns, ATMs can be absent, so withdraw in Yerevan before monastery road trips.

Payment Apps

Telcell and IDram are local Armenian digital payment apps used widely by residents. International visitors can use Google Pay and Apple Pay at an increasing number of Yerevan restaurants and hotels. Cards work at most formal establishments.

Daily Budget

Armenia is excellent value compared to its European neighbours. Budget travellers spend around 30 to 50 USD per day. Mid-range visitors in good hotels with restaurant meals budget 70 to 120 USD per day. Fine dining and cognac experiences add premium costs.

Data cost: Armenian carriers at the airport offer competitive local prepaid rates. International carrier roaming is typically expensive. A Roamix Armenia eSIM costs a fraction of standard daily roaming from European operators.

Getting Around Armenia

Armenia is compact enough that most sights are reachable on day trips from Yerevan by taxi or marshrutka minibus. A rental car gives the most flexibility for visiting remote monasteries and the southern wine region. Yerevan has excellent GG and Yandex Go ride-hailing that are safer and more transparent than unmetered street taxis.

GG and Yandex Go ride-hailing in Yerevan

GG is Armenia's domestic ride-hailing app and is the most reliable way to get around Yerevan. Yandex Go also operates in the city. Both require an active Roamix data connection to book, track and pay. Far cheaper than metered taxis and transparent pricing.

Marshrutka minibuses

Shared marshrutka minibuses connect Yerevan's main bus station (Kilikia) with provincial towns including Dilijan, Gyumri, Vanadzor and Goris. Schedules are frequent but informally timed. Use Roamix data to check the Kilikia Station WhatsApp groups for real-time departure information.

Rental car

The best option for monastery road trips. Several international rental agencies operate at EVN airport. Many monastery access roads are unpaved and require an off-road capable vehicle for the final approach. Download offline maps before leaving Yerevan.

Day tours from Yerevan

Most Yerevan-based tour operators offer daily minibus tours to Khor Virap, Noravank, Tatev, Lake Sevan and Dilijan. Book through Roamix data on Google Maps or local travel agency websites the night before departure.

Regions & Travel

Armenia is compact enough to visit its major highlights in ten days but rewarding enough for weeks of exploration. Yerevan offers a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture, a world-class cognac distillery, excellent museums and the best views of Mount Ararat from Khor Virap. The country's monastery network is extraordinary in both density and beauty. A Roamix eSIM keeps navigation, offline monastery trail maps and weather updates working as you move across a small country with large landscape variety.

Best time to visit: May to October for the best weather and monastery road trips. September for the grape harvest and wine festivals in Vayots Dzor. June to August for hiking in Dilijan National Park and the Caucasus foothills. November to April brings snow to the highlands and ski season at Tsaghkadzor.

Yerevan and Central Armenia

The capital is a cosmopolitan pink tufa stone city with an energetic cafe scene, the Republic Square fountains, the Cascade staircase and hilltop, world-class Armenian history and art museums, and a brandy distillery (Ararat) with outstanding tours. The Garni Gorge and Geghard Monastery are 30 minutes away.

Signal: Best 4G and 5G coverage in the country. Ucom 5G and Viva-MTS 4G are strong throughout central Yerevan, Cascade district and the city outskirts. Coverage extends along the M5 motorway east to Garni.

Hidden Gems

Geghard Monastery

monastery

Yerevan region

A UNESCO World Heritage monastery partially carved directly into a basalt cliff in the Azat River gorge, with a series of cave chapels and chambers that create one of the most dramatic sacred architecture experiences in the Caucasus. Geghard is 40 km from Yerevan and easily combined with the Garni Temple on the same day.

Signal: Viva-MTS 4G covers the Azat River gorge approach road and the monastery entrance area. Signal drops inside the cave-church chambers carved into the cliff.

The monastery is free to enter but the access road is narrow and parking fills by mid-morning on weekends. Download the Geghard directions and the Garni Temple circuit offline in Yerevan and use Roamix data to check GG driver availability for the return if you did not rent a car.

Tatev Monastery and Wings of Tatev Cable Car

monastery

Southern Armenia

A 9th-century monastery perched above a dramatic 300-metre canyon, reached by the Wings of Tatev, the world's longest non-stop reversible aerial tramway at 5.7 km. The cable car ride alone is one of the most spectacular travel experiences in the Caucasus.

Signal: Viva-MTS 4G covers the cable car base station at Halidzor and the monastery plateau. Signal can be intermittent on the canyon descent road from Goris.

Wings of Tatev cable car tickets can sell out on weekends and Armenian holidays. Book tickets online at wingstatev.am over Roamix data before driving 250 km from Yerevan. Download the Goris to Tatev road offline, as the canyon section loses signal.

Lake Sevan

lake

Gegharkunik Province

One of the world's largest high-altitude freshwater lakes at 2,000 metres, surrounded by mountains and featuring the Sevanavank Monastery on its peninsula, crayfish and ishkhan trout restaurants along the shore and summer beach resorts. A popular day trip or overnight from Yerevan.

Signal: Good Viva-MTS and Team Telecom 4G along the northern shore road. Sevanavank peninsula has reliable signal. Eastern shore roads can be patchy.

Sevan's summer fish restaurants at Lchashen and Sevan town sell the freshest ishkhan trout in Armenia. Use Roamix data to find the best-reviewed fish restaurants on the lake, as the choices are numerous and quality varies significantly.

Noravank Monastery

monastery

Vayots Dzor

Set in a narrow red sandstone canyon, Noravank is arguably the most photogenic monastery in Armenia, with its distinctive 13th-century double-story gavit staircase rising directly against the red cliff face. The canyon itself is an extraordinary geological setting that frames the architecture.

Signal: Limited signal on the narrow red canyon access road. Viva-MTS covers the Amaghu Canyon base approach but the 6 km canyon road has intermittent signal. Download the route in Yeghegnadzor before turning off the M2 highway.

Noravank is usually combined with the Areni wine cave on the same day trip from Yerevan. Download the canyon road access point offline and use Roamix data at the Areni village restaurant for wine tasting research before the canyon approach.

Khor Virap Monastery and Ararat View

monastery

Ararat Plain

Armenia's most photographically iconic location, where a monastery fortress sits in the flat Ararat Plain with the snow-capped double peak of Mount Ararat rising dramatically behind it from Turkish territory. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned here before converting Tiridates III, making Armenia the world's first Christian nation in 301 AD.

Signal: Viva-MTS and Team Telecom 4G cover the Ararat Plain access roads and Khor Virap monastery grounds. The view of Mount Ararat is unobstructed from the monastery walls.

The Ararat view from Khor Virap is best in early morning or late afternoon when the mountain is clear. Check the Yerevan weather and mountain visibility forecast over Roamix data before the 30-minute drive from the city.

Haghpat Monastery

monastery

Northern Armenia

A UNESCO World Heritage monastery in the northern Debed Canyon, part of a complex with the adjacent Sanahin Monastery that represents the peak of Armenian medieval religious architecture. Haghpat's 10th-century cathedral, gavit assembly hall and library scriptorium are perfectly preserved.

Signal: Viva-MTS 4G covers Alaverdi city and the Haghpat village approach. The monastery itself sits above the Debed Canyon with coverage at the site.

Haghpat and Sanahin are typically visited together in the same canyon day trip. Download the Debed Canyon road between the two monasteries offline in Alaverdi, as the canyon road between them loses signal in the gorge section.

Cascade and Cafesjian Museum

museum

Yerevan

Yerevan's landmark modern art and urban garden complex, where a 572-step staircase climbs from the city centre to the Yerevan Victory Park, flanked by contemporary sculpture, water features and the indoor Cafesjian Museum of Modern Art. The hilltop platform gives the best city panorama, with Mount Ararat visible on clear days.

Signal: Excellent 5G signal throughout the Cascade complex and Abovyan Street below. Data is reliable throughout the museum exterior and indoor galleries.

The Cafesjian Museum hosts changing international exhibitions that require advance knowledge of current shows. Check the current exhibition schedule over Roamix data before visiting and plan the Cascade climb for the late afternoon light on Ararat.

Areni Cave and Wine Heritage

archaeological site

Vayots Dzor

The Areni-1 cave complex is the site of the world's oldest known winery, dating to approximately 6,000 years ago. Nearby Areni village and the wider Vayots Dzor valley produce Armenia's finest wines, including the internationally recognised Areni Noir red. The cave tour and a winery visit make for one of the most educational half-days in Armenia.

Signal: Viva-MTS 4G covers Areni village and the cave access area. The cave interior has no signal but coverage resumes at the entrance.

Areni winery visits at Voskevaz, Old Vine or Trinity Canyon require advance booking for the full tasting experience. Reserve over Roamix data before the drive from Yerevan and combine with the Areni cave tour and the Noravank canyon on the same day.

Dilijan National Park

National Park

Tavush Province

Often called the Armenian Switzerland for its dense beech and oak forests, Dilijan is the greenest town in Armenia and the gateway to the country's most accessible trekking. The Haghartsin Monastery is a short hike through the forest. The Old Town has a restored artisan quarter with ceramics and carpet workshops.

Signal: Viva-MTS 4G covers Dilijan town and the main park access roads. Trails into the park interior above 1,500 metres can lose signal. Download the trail map in Dilijan town.

Dilijan guesthouses fill on summer weekends when Yerevan residents escape the heat. Book your accommodation over Roamix data in advance and download the Parz Lich forest walk and Haghartsin Monastery trail offline before leaving Dilijan town.

Garni Temple

historic site

Yerevan region

The only surviving Hellenistic-era temple in the former Soviet Union, built in the 1st century AD on the edge of the Azat River gorge and dedicated to the sun god Mihr. The temple's colonnaded structure and dramatic gorge edge location make it visually unlike anything else in the region.

Signal: Good Viva-MTS 4G at Garni village and the temple access road. Signal is reliable throughout the canyon viewpoint area adjacent to the temple.

Garni and Geghard Monastery are the standard combination day trip from Yerevan. Use Roamix data to book a GG or Yandex Go driver for the combined 80 km circuit from Yerevan, as rental cars are not always necessary for this accessible trip.

Remote Work from Armenia

Yerevan has become a rapidly growing remote work destination, partly boosted by an influx of Russian tech workers following 2022. The city has excellent co-working spaces, a growing startup scene in the Tumo-adjacent district, solid 5G connectivity and a very affordable cost of living.

Ucom 5G and Viva-MTS 4G handle video calls and tethering comfortably in Yerevan. A Roamix plan with 15 GB or more suits a working month of calls, uploads and travel around the country.

Workspot Yerevan and Smart City Yerevan are the best co-working spaces in the city. Use hotel or co-working wifi as the primary connection for large file transfers and the Roamix eSIM as a secure mobile backup.

Local Tips for Armenia

Language

Armenian (Hayeren) is the official language, written in the unique Armenian alphabet. Russian is widely spoken, especially among the older population and in provincial areas. English is increasingly common in Yerevan's hospitality and tourism sector. A translation app on your Roamix-connected phone is useful for menus and signs outside Yerevan.

Tipping

Tipping 10 percent is appreciated but not mandatory in restaurants. Round up the bill or leave the change. GG and Yandex Go rides are tipped at your discretion through the app. Tour guides receive 5 to 10 USD per person for a day tour.

Food & Dining

Armenian cuisine is outstanding and underrated. Khorovats (Armenian barbecue of vegetables and meats over open fire) is the national dish for celebrations. Lahmajoun (flat bread with meat topping), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), basturma (dried cured beef), fresh lavash bread and the extraordinary variety of dried fruits and local honey from the Ararat Plain define the food culture.

Transport

GG ride-hailing is the safest and most transparent transport option in Yerevan. Download it over Roamix data before landing. For provincial day trips, marshrutkas from Kilikia Bus Station are cheap and frequent. Rental cars require an international driving licence.

Safety & Health in Armenia

Armenia is a safe country for tourists, with very low rates of violent crime. Standard urban precautions apply in Yerevan's busy markets. The primary safety issue for visitors is the ongoing conflict situation near the Azerbaijan border: all areas of Tavush Province near the Azerbaijani border and any route toward the former Nagorno-Karabakh region (now under Azerbaijani control) are classified as Do Not Travel by the US State Department. Do not approach these border areas.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active at all times for navigation and emergency access. Confirm with your hotel or tour operator before driving east or south toward any area flagged in current travel advisories. Download the emergency contacts for the US, UK or your national embassy in Yerevan before travel.

Health Note

Medical care in Yerevan is adequate at private clinics but limited in rural areas. Nairi Medical Centre and Izmirlian Medical Centre are the best private hospitals in Yerevan. Comprehensive travel health insurance is strongly recommended.

Water Safety

Tap water in Yerevan is generally safe to drink and is supplied from mountain springs. In rural areas and smaller towns, bottled water is advisable. Armenians are proud of their spring water quality and public fountains (pulpulaks) throughout Yerevan are safe to drink from.
