Senegal eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected from Dakar to Saint-Louis
Senegal is West Africa's most stable and tourist-friendly democracy, offering vibrant Dakar, the French colonial heritage of Saint-Louis, the slave-trade history of Goree Island, the wildlife of Djoudj National Park and the beaches of the Petite Cote. Orange Senegal is the dominant operator with the strongest 4G LTE coverage across Dakar and main towns. Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) replaced the old Dakar Leopold Senghor airport in 2017 and now handles all international flights 47 km from central Dakar. A Roamix eSIM activates on arrival without a SIM kiosk. Cache offline maps before the Saloum Delta, Casamance or cross-country drives, where signal fades quickly outside main towns.
Key Takeaways
- Orange Senegal leads with the strongest 4G LTE coverage across Dakar and all major towns, including the first 5G deployment in the capital.
- A Roamix eSIM activates at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) on arrival, 47 km from Dakar, without a SIM kiosk stop.
- Senegal uses the XOF West African CFA franc, pegged to the Euro at 655.96. ATMs in Dakar dispense XOF reliably.
- French and Wolof are the main languages. 'Teranga', the Wolof concept of hospitality, defines how visitors are treated across the country.
- Download offline maps before the Saloum Delta mangroves, Casamance forests or drives toward Saint-Louis and Djoudj, as coverage fades outside main road corridors.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM
Most travellers
Instant activation on Orange Senegal on arrival, no roaming bill and nothing physical to collect at the airport.
Local physical SIM
Long stays needing a local number or Orange Money
Orange Senegal SIMs are available at DSS airport, in telecom shops and street kiosks across Dakar. Requires passport ID.
Pocket wifi
Groups sharing data
Available for rent in Dakar. Another device to charge, and coverage limitations follow the same operator network as a local SIM.
Carrier roaming
Very short trips with no setup time
West Africa roaming rates from most carriers are very expensive. A Roamix plan avoids per-day roaming surcharges.
For most visitors to Senegal, a Roamix eSIM is the most cost-effective and hassle-free way to stay online, with Orange Senegal's coverage and no surprise charges on arrival.

Senegal's mobile market is led by Orange Senegal, which holds the strongest 4G LTE coverage across Dakar, Saint-Louis, Ziguinchor and all main inter-city highway corridors. Expresso (formerly Sudatel) provides secondary 4G coverage and is a viable option in Dakar and northern Senegal. Free Senegal is a newer entrant growing rapidly in Dakar and urban centres. A Roamix eSIM connects to the strongest available local network on arrival at Blaise Diagne International Airport.
Dominant operator with widest 4G coverage across Dakar, all regional capitals, the Dakar to Saint-Louis highway and the main Casamance corridor. Beginning 5G rollout in Dakar.
Provides 4G coverage in Dakar and northern Senegal. A reliable alternative to Orange in the capital but coverage narrows significantly outside urban areas.
Growing 4G presence in Dakar and major towns. Competitive pricing but coverage still limited compared to Orange Senegal on rural and regional routes.
Typical Speeds
4G LTE in Dakar delivers 15 to 50 Mbps. Regional towns including Thies, Ziguinchor and Saint-Louis average 5 to 20 Mbps. Rural areas and national parks often fall back to 3G or no signal.
5G Status
Orange Senegal has launched 5G in Dakar as part of a national infrastructure upgrade. 5G is not yet widely deployed outside the capital.
For visitors covering Dakar and the Petite Cote, any operator provides adequate urban coverage. For a cross-country trip to Saint-Louis, Casamance or Tambacounda, Orange Senegal's superior highway and regional coverage is the clear choice.
Senegal's rural regions, including the Saloum Delta, Casamance forests, Djoudj National Park and the border areas with Guinea-Bissau and Mali, have limited to no 4G coverage. The Ferlo desert interior and remote villages fall back to 2G or no signal. Download offline maps before leaving main towns.
Orange Senegal and Expresso use Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 8 (900 MHz) LTE, compatible with most recent unlocked phones. Confirm your device supports these bands before travel.
Data Usage Guide
Data needs in Senegal are moderate. Navigation through Dakar's complex road network and bush taxi stations, WhatsApp communication with local guides and hotel bookings cover most daily needs. Offline preparation is critical outside the capital.
Download offline map packs for the Saloum Delta, Casamance and Saint-Louis before leaving Dakar, as coverage becomes patchy quickly on rural routes.

How to Set Up a Senegal eSIM
A Roamix Senegal eSIM is best installed over wifi before departure. It activates automatically on Orange Senegal or another local network when you land at Blaise Diagne International Airport, so you arrive already connected.
Works on eSIM-capable phones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models. The phone must be carrier unlocked.
- 1
Buy your plan on the Roamix Senegal eSIM page before departure.
- 2
Scan the QR code or tap to install the eSIM over wifi at home.
- 3
Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM as primary for calls and texts.
- 4
Enable data roaming for the Roamix line only.
- 5
Land at DSS and the eSIM connects automatically to a local network.
APN Note
Roamix sets the correct APN automatically on most devices. If data does not start after landing, apply the APN from your activation email and toggle airplane mode once.
Troubleshooting
No data on arrival usually means data roaming is off for the Roamix line. Check Settings, select the network manually if needed, and restart.
Get connected the moment you land in Senegal.
Get your Senegal eSIMArrival Checklist
Confirm your Roamix eSIM has connected to Orange Senegal or another operator before leaving the DSS arrivals hall.
Arrange transport to Dakar (47 km east) via airport taxi, yewou yewou shared transport or pre-booked transfer, as public buses are limited from DSS.
Withdraw XOF at the DSS airport ATM for taxis, markets and smaller purchases on arrival.
Download offline maps for Dakar and your first destination before leaving the airport, as the 47 km drive to central Dakar involves multiple toll roads.
Note that the official Dakar taxi fare from DSS to central Dakar is regulated. Agree on the price before departure.
How locals communicate
Senegalese use WhatsApp heavily for messaging and voice calls. Facebook is extremely popular, especially in rural areas where it is often the primary social media platform. SMS is still used for mobile money notifications.
Keep your home SIM active for SMS two-factor authentication while using the Roamix line for data and WhatsApp. Orange Money is the dominant mobile payment platform and requires a local SIM for full functionality.

Get your Senegal eSIMMoney & Payments in Senegal
Senegal uses the XOF West African CFA franc, pegged to the Euro at 655.96. Cards are accepted at larger hotels and tourist-facing restaurants in Dakar, but cash is essential for markets, bush taxis, street food and rural areas.
Cash vs Card
Cash is king outside tourist areas. Withdraw XOF in Dakar before any regional journey. ATMs in smaller towns can run out of cash on weekends.
ATMs
ATMs are available at DSS airport and throughout Dakar. CBAO, Ecobank and BNP Paribas machines work reliably with international cards. Rural areas have few or no ATMs.
Payment Apps
Orange Money is the dominant mobile payment platform and widely used for local transactions, but requires a local Senegalese SIM. Wave is a growing competitor in Dakar. International cards at point of sale are accepted in the tourist sector.
Daily Budget
Budget travellers in local guesthouses spend around 20,000 to 40,000 XOF per day. Mid-range hotel and restaurant options run 50,000 to 100,000 XOF per person.
Data cost: West Africa carrier roaming is among the most expensive globally. A Roamix Senegal plan covers the same trip for a small fraction of the roaming cost.
Getting Around Senegal
Senegal's transport network combines bush taxis (sept-place Peugeot 504s) for inter-city travel, the Dakar BRT and car rapide minibuses in the capital, and domestic flights for Casamance. For national park visits and Saloum Delta explorations, organised tours or rental vehicles are essential.
Dakar BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)
Dakar's BRT launched in 2023 as the first bus rapid transit system in sub-Saharan Africa, connecting DSS airport to the city centre. Use Roamix data to check routes and purchase tickets via the DDD app.
Bush taxi (sept-place)
The backbone of inter-city transport in Senegal. Peugeot 504 seven-seater taxis depart from Dakar's main gares routieres (bus stations). Use Roamix data to find the correct departure point and confirm journey times before arrival at the station.
Rental car
Available from international agencies at DSS. The best option for Lac Rose, Bandia Reserve, the Petite Cote and any self-drive itinerary. Use Roamix navigation for all routes and download offline maps before national park visits.
Domestic flights
Air Senegal flies between Dakar and Ziguinchor and Cap Skirring, a useful alternative to the long overland route through or around the Gambia. Use Roamix data to check bookings and manage flight changes.
Regions & Travel
Senegal offers a richly layered travel experience from the chaotic energy of Dakar and the colonial history of Goree Island to the desert landscapes of the north, the wetland wilderness of Casamance and the mangrove waterways of the Saloum Delta. The country's legendary teranga hospitality makes independent travel easy. A Roamix eSIM keeps navigation, hotel booking and communication working across this diverse country.
Best time to visit: November to May is the dry season and best time for most travel, with temperatures of 25 to 32C and low humidity. June to October is the wet season with heavy rains, lush green landscapes and fewer tourists. The Tabaski and Dakar Jazz festival peak in May.
Dakar and Cap-Vert Peninsula
The energetic capital spreads across the Cap-Vert peninsula, the westernmost point of continental Africa. Dakar's vibrant markets, restaurant scene, Ngor surfing village, the IFAN Museum of African Arts and the pink waters of Lac Rose (Retba) nearby define the capital experience.
Signal: Excellent 4G and early 5G coverage throughout Dakar, Almadies, Plateau, the Corniche and the nearby Petite Cote. Orange Senegal delivers the fastest speeds in the capital.
Petite Cote and Saly
The resort stretch south of Dakar running from Toubab Dialaw to Joal-Fadiouth, anchored by the beach resort town of Saly. White sand beaches, beach resorts, the Bandia Wildlife Reserve and the stilt village of Fadiouth on an island of shells define this tourist corridor.
Signal: Good Orange Senegal 4G coverage in Saly, M'Bour and along the main coastal road. Beach resort areas have adequate 4G though speeds can slow on busy weekend afternoons.
Saint-Louis and the North
The former French colonial capital of West Africa, Saint-Louis sits on a narrow barrier island at the mouth of the Senegal River, its 18th-century architecture reflected in the water. To the north, Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is one of the world's most important waterbird habitats.
Signal: Orange Senegal has reasonable 4G coverage in Saint-Louis and on the main Dakar to Saint-Louis N1 highway. Djoudj National Park and the Langue de Barbarie have limited 3G signal. Download maps before driving the remote northern routes.
Saloum Delta and Kaolack
The Saloum Delta is a labyrinth of mangrove waterways, bolongs (channels), shell mound islands and fishing villages between the Petite Cote and the Gambia border. Kaolack is the commercial hub and a centre of Mouride Islamic culture.
Signal: Orange Senegal provides 4G in Kaolack and Foundiougne, but mangrove boat trips and outer delta islands have very limited signal. Download offline maps and boat operator contacts before entering the delta waterways.
Casamance
Southern Senegal south of the Gambia, Casamance is the greenest and most tropical part of the country, with dense forests, cashew plantations, Diola culture and the relaxed beach town of Cap Skirring. Ziguinchor is the regional capital.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G covers Ziguinchor and Cap Skirring. Remote forest paths, river crossings and the Casamance interior have limited 3G or no signal. Download offline maps before exploring off the main paved roads.
Hidden Gems
Goree Island
UNESCO heritageDakar, Cap-Vert
A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important sites in the history of the transatlantic slave trade, where the Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) and its Door of No Return draw visitors from across the African diaspora.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G covers Goree Island, accessible by 20-minute ferry from Dakar port. Signal is consistent on the small island.

Signal: Orange Senegal provides consistent 4G at Lac Rose, around 35 km northeast of Dakar. The salt lake is accessible as a half-day trip from the capital.
Lac Rose is easily combined with a visit to the Dakar Rally monument nearby. Use Roamix data to book a guided Lac Rose quad bike or 4WD tour from Dakar and navigate the sandy tracks around the lake.
Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary

A labyrinth of saltwater channels, mangrove forests and ancient shell-mound islands rising from the water. The Saloum Delta UNESCO Biosphere Reserve hosts dolphins, manatees, hippos and an extraordinary bird diversity far from the tourist mainstream.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G in Foundiougne and Karang, but mangrove waterways and outer bolong channels are largely off-grid. Download your offline map and lodge contact details before entering the delta.

Cap Skirring Beach
beachCasamance
The finest beach in Senegal, a long crescent of white sand and gentle surf on the southern Casamance coast near the Guinea-Bissau border. Backed by cashew trees and traditional Diola fishing villages, virtually free of the tourist overcrowding seen on the Petite Cote.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G covers Cap Skirring town and the main beach resort area. Remote beaches further north or south along the Casamance coast have intermittent signal.
Air Senegal flies directly from Dakar to Cap Skirring, avoiding the Gambia overland transit. Book your flight over Roamix data and confirm your lodge contact before the short flight.
Bandia Wildlife Reserve
wildlife reservePetite Cote
A private wildlife reserve 65 km south of Dakar offering rhino, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and over 100 other species in a West African savannah setting without requiring a trip to East Africa.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G covers the reserve entrance and main safari tracks near Mbour. Deep within the reserve, signal weakens. Download your map and booking confirmation before entering.
Bandia safari tours require advance booking. Confirm your morning game drive time and download the reserve map over Roamix data before the drive from Dakar or Saly.
Joal-Fadiouth Stilt Village
cultural heritagePetite Cote
A remarkable island village on the Petite Cote built entirely on shells, connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge. Fadiouth is notable for its mixed Christian-Muslim cemetery where the two communities are buried side by side, and for its unique architecture on accumulated shells.
Signal: Orange Senegal 4G in Joal town. The Fadiouth island bridge and shell-mound island have adequate signal for photography and messaging.

Language
French is the official language of government and education. Wolof is the national lingua franca spoken by over 90 percent of Senegalese. A few Wolof words, like 'mangi fi' (I am here, I am fine) and 'jerejef' (thank you), go a long way with locals.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated in restaurants and for guides. 500 to 1,000 XOF per restaurant meal and 2,000 to 5,000 XOF per guide day are customary. Always negotiate prices for taxis and market goods before purchase.
Food & Dining
Thieboudienne (fish and rice), the national dish, is outstanding in Dakar's restaurants and family cook shops. Look also for yassa poulet (chicken in lemon-onion sauce), mafe (peanut stew) and thiebou yapp (meat and rice). Street food including dibi (grilled lamb) is excellent and safe at busy stalls.
Transport
The Dakar BRT connects DSS airport to the city centre and is the cheapest and most reliable option for the 47 km journey. In Dakar, the car rapide colourful minibuses are the local experience but a Roamix data connection on Yango or InDriver ride-hailing app is safer and more predictable.

Essential Apps
Yango
Ride-hailing app widely used in Dakar as a reliable alternative to street taxis. Requires a live Roamix data connection to book and track rides.
Google Maps
Primary navigation tool for Dakar and Senegal. Download offline packs for Casamance and Saint-Louis before leaving the capital.
The dominant communication app across Senegal. Most hotels, guides, tour operators and restaurants communicate via WhatsApp.
Safety & Health in Senegal
Senegal is one of the most stable and safe countries in West Africa. Dakar has a visible pickpocket risk in busy markets and tourist areas, but violent crime against tourists is uncommon. The main health risks are from mosquito-borne diseases including malaria, which requires prophylaxis, and stomach issues from water or street food.
Keep your Roamix eSIM active to receive your accommodation's contact details, share your location with a travel companion and access emergency numbers. In Dakar traffic, having navigation active on your data prevents getting lost in an unfamiliar road network.
Health Note
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for all parts of Senegal. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country and strongly recommended regardless. Carry comprehensive travel health insurance.
Water Safety
Tap water in Dakar is treated but not recommended for drinking. Bottled water is cheap and widely available. Outside the capital, only use bottled or purified water.
