Mozambique eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected from Maputo to the Bazaruto Archipelago
Mozambique has 4G LTE in Maputo and major cities, with Vodacom providing the best coverage along the southern coast including Inhambane, Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago gateway. Movitel has the strongest reach in rural areas and the north. No 5G has been launched. Network quality drops significantly outside provincial capitals, and the far north including Cabo Delgado, Niassa Reserve and the remote interior is 3G or no signal. A Roamix Mozambique eSIM connects you on arrival at Maputo International Airport and keeps you online for the southern beach circuit. Budget 5 to 8 GB for a two-week trip, always downloading offline maps before any bush or island departure.
Key Takeaways
- Vodacom Mozambique has the best 4G coverage along the southern coast from Maputo to Vilanculos and Bazaruto.
- Movitel is the best choice for rural areas, the north and anywhere outside major provincial cities.
- No 5G exists in Mozambique. 4G LTE covers Maputo and major towns; rural and remote areas are 3G or no signal.
- A Roamix eSIM connects on arrival at Maputo International Airport (MPM) with no SIM registration needed.

Mozambique's mobile network centres on three operators: Vodacom (the coverage leader in the south and along the coast), Movitel (best for rural reach and the north) and Tmcel/MCEL (the state operator, urban areas only). A Roamix Mozambique eSIM connects to the strongest available local network on arrival at Maputo International Airport and keeps you online through the capital and the southern beach circuit. Coverage weakens progressively north of Beira, and is limited in Cabo Delgado, the Niassa Reserve and most of the interior.
Best 4G coverage in Maputo and the southern coastal corridor including Inhambane, Tofo Beach, Vilanculos and the Bazaruto Archipelago gateway. Strongest choice for the beach circuit itinerary.

5G Status
Mozambique has not launched commercial 5G services. 4G LTE is the current maximum in urban areas.
For the classic Mozambique beach circuit from Maputo through Inhambane, Tofo and Vilanculos to Bazaruto, Vodacom is the right choice. For anyone venturing to Gorongosa, the Niassa Reserve or overland through the north, use Movitel's network and download all maps before leaving any town.
Mozambique is a large country (800,000 square kilometres) with a long coastline and vast interior. Outside provincial capitals and the main coastal towns, coverage drops to 3G or disappears. The Niassa Reserve, remote Cabo Delgado interior and the far western border areas can have no signal for days at a time.
Mozambican operators use standard LTE bands (B3, B7, B20) compatible with most unlocked smartphones from iPhone XS onward. Confirm your device is unlocked before travel.
Data Usage Guide
Data needs in Mozambique are similar to other East African destinations: moderate in Maputo, with heavy emphasis on offline download preparation before any bush or coastal island journey. The most valuable data use is downloading offline map packages in Maputo before the long coastal drive.
In Maputo, download Google Maps offline packages for Inhambane, Vilanculos, Beira and the Nampula province before heading north. Also save all lodge WhatsApp contacts and boat transfer coordinates offline before any island departure.

- 1
Buy your Roamix Mozambique plan on the Mozambique eSIM page before departure.
- 2
Scan the QR code or install via the Roamix link over wifi at home.
- 3
Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM active for calls and texts.
- 4
Enable data roaming on the Roamix line only.

Get connected the moment you land in Mozambique.
Get your Mozambique eSIMArrival Checklist
Confirm your Roamix eSIM has connected to a local Mozambican network before leaving the arrivals hall at Maputo International Airport (MPM).
Download offline maps for all coastal destinations and any bush routes before leaving Maputo, as coverage deteriorates quickly north of Inhambane.
Exchange some MZN at the airport or a Maputo bank. Cards are accepted in Maputo and the main resorts, but cash is essential in rural areas and on offshore islands.
Book your boat transfer to Bazaruto or Benguerra Island in advance, as transfers operate on tides and schedules that fill quickly in peak season.
Check the current security situation in Cabo Delgado before planning any travel to the far north, as parts of the province have experienced insurgent activity.
How locals communicate
WhatsApp is the dominant messaging platform across Mozambique and is used by accommodation, dive shops, tour operators and individuals. Standard voice calls use local SIM numbers. Facebook Messenger is also widely used.
Keep your home SIM active for SMS two-factor authentication on banking apps. Use the Roamix line for data and WhatsApp communication with Mozambican operators and accommodation.
Airports in Mozambique
Maputo International Airport
Maputo
Free wifi available in the main terminal. Maputo is the primary international hub with connections to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Lisbon.
Activate your Roamix eSIM at Maputo Airport before collecting your luggage. This is the last reliable high-speed wifi point before the coastal road south. Download offline maps for Inhambane, Tofo and Vilanculos before leaving the terminal.
Beira Airport
Beira
Limited wifi in the terminal. Beira is the second largest city and a regional hub for central Mozambique and Gorongosa National Park.
Confirm your Roamix eSIM is connected on arrival at Beira and download offline maps for the Gorongosa route (about 3 hours northwest of Beira) before leaving the airport area.
Nampula Airport
Nampula
Basic wifi in the terminal. Nampula is the largest city in northern Mozambique and the gateway for Ilha de Mozambique and the Quirimbas Archipelago.
Ensure your Roamix eSIM connects on arrival at Nampula and download all maps for Ilha de Mozambique and Pemba before the road transfers north, as coverage becomes intermittent between towns.
Pemba Airport
Pemba
Small terminal with limited wifi. Pemba is the regional capital of Cabo Delgado province and the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago.
Check the current security situation in Cabo Delgado before flying to Pemba. Download Quirimbas Archipelago maps and lodge transfer details using your Roamix data at Nampula before the onward flight north.
Visa & Entry for Mozambique
Most visitors to Mozambique require a visa. Citizens of South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania and some other SADC and African countries can enter visa free. Most Western nationalities including the USA, UK, EU, Canada and Australia require a visa, available as an e-Visa before arrival or as a visa on arrival at Maputo Airport.
eVisa / ETA
Mozambique offers an e-Visa via the official portal at evisa.gov.mz. The e-Visa is strongly recommended over the visa on arrival as it guarantees entry and avoids airport queue delays. Standard tourist e-Visa costs around USD 65 for a 30-day single entry and takes 1 to 7 working days.
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from Mozambique.
Onward ticket
Proof of onward travel, accommodation bookings and yellow fever vaccination certificate (if arriving from or transiting through a yellow fever zone country) are required on arrival.
Keep your e-Visa approval, yellow fever certificate (if applicable), accommodation bookings and onward travel accessible on your phone. Use your Roamix eSIM to pull up documents at the immigration desk.
Visa requirements and fees change. Confirm current requirements at evisa.gov.mz or through the Mozambican consulate in your country before booking.
Get connected the moment you land in Mozambique.
Get your Mozambique eSIMMoney & Payments in Mozambique
Mozambique uses the Mozambican metical (MZN). The exchange rate fluctuates but is roughly 60 to 65 MZN per USD. Exchange at the airport or major Maputo banks. South African rand (ZAR) is often accepted in southern areas near the border.
Cash vs Card
Cards are accepted at Maputo hotels, supermarkets and some coastal lodges. Outside Maputo, many establishments are cash only. Withdraw sufficient MZN in Maputo before any coastal or northern journey.
ATMs
ATMs from Millennium BIM, BCI and Standard Bank are available in Maputo, Beira, Nampula and Pemba. Outside major cities, ATMs are unreliable or absent. Withdraw before any bush or coastal island trip.
Payment Apps
M-Pesa (Vodacom) and e-Mola are the main mobile money platforms in Mozambique, used by locals for person-to-person transfers. Foreign visitors cannot easily use these without a local SIM and Mozambican bank account. Cards and cash remain essential.
Daily Budget
Budget travellers in guesthouses spend around USD 40 to 60 per day. Mid-range lodge accommodation on the coast runs USD 100 to 200 per night. High-end Bazaruto island lodges are USD 400 to 1,500 per night, all-inclusive.
Data cost: A Vodacom local SIM data bundle in Mozambique is cheap by African standards. A Roamix eSIM eliminates the registration process while providing comparable coverage for the southern tourist circuit.
Getting Around Mozambique
Getting around Mozambique requires careful planning for the vast distances, variable road quality and the fact that the best beach destinations are separated by long drives or domestic flights. Self-drive 4WD is essential for the coastal tracks and Gorongosa. Data is critical for navigation but must be backed by offline maps before every bush departure.
Self-drive 4WD
Essential for the Inhambane coast, Bazaruto access from Vilanculos and any bush driving. The EN1 main highway is paved but potholed. Coastal beach tracks require 4WD and sand driving experience. Download Google Maps offline and iOverlander data for all routes before departure.
Domestic flights
LAM Mozambique Airlines and Airlink serve Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Pemba and Vilanculos. Flying saves days of overland driving. Book through LAM or Airlink websites using your Roamix data and confirm well in advance as schedules are limited.
Chapa (minibus)
Chapas are the local shared minibus network connecting towns and villages. Reliable and cheap for city hops in Maputo. Between major towns they are an adventurous option requiring patience. No booking system; board at the main transport hub.
Boat transfers
Essential for reaching Bazaruto and Benguerra islands from Vilanculos and the Quirimbas from Pemba. Coordinate with your lodge using WhatsApp over your Roamix data before arrival. Transfers run on tide and weather.
Dhow sailing
Traditional wooden dhow sailing between islands and along the coast is an authentic Mozambican experience. Arrange through lodge operators or local fishermen. The dhow route between Vilanculos and Bazaruto is 30 to 60 minutes depending on wind.
Regions & Travel
Mozambique offers one of Africa's most spectacular coastlines stretching over 2,700 kilometres, with the Bazaruto Archipelago's turquoise shallows, the whale shark waters of Tofo, the UNESCO heritage island of Ilha de Mozambique and the recovering wilderness of Gorongosa National Park. September to October is spring in the Southern Hemisphere, with temperatures rising and the last dry months before the rains. Excellent for wildlife in Gorongosa as game concentrates at remaining water sources. The Bazaruto whale migration peaks in September to October. Tofo whale shark encounters are excellent.
Summer
In Mozambique, summer runs November to March with the Southern Hemisphere warm season. This is the wet season with afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity (28 to 35C), lush green landscapes and peak whale shark encounters at Tofo. Roads can flood and game viewing in Gorongosa is obscured by tall grass. Not ideal for bush travel but beautiful for coastal visits.
Fall
April to May is the transition from wet to dry season in the Southern Hemisphere autumn. Rain decreases, humidity drops and the landscape is still lush. Good for coast and diving. Gorongosa begins to open up as water levels drop and wildlife concentrates. A pleasant time to visit with fewer tourists.
Winter
June to August is the Southern Hemisphere dry season, the coolest and most comfortable period with temperatures 18 to 25C on the coast. Peak season for Gorongosa wildlife viewing, humpback whale watching and the main tourist season on the Bazaruto and Inhambane coast. Book accommodation well in advance.
Remote Work from Mozambique
Maputo is the most viable base for remote work in Mozambique, with growing cafe culture, reasonable 4G speeds and several business hotels with reliable wifi. Coastal lodge stays are peaceful but satellite wifi is too slow for sustained remote work.
Vodacom 4G in Maputo delivers 10 to 50 Mbps, adequate for video calls and tethering. A Roamix plan of 10 to 15 GB covers a typical working week. Outside Maputo, rely on lodge wifi as the primary connection.
Work from Maputo's modern hotel lobbies or the growing number of cafes with business-grade wifi. Use your Roamix eSIM as a secure backup for sensitive work and for connectivity on the move between meetings.

Language
Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique. Emakhuwa, Xichangana, Cisena, Elomwe and Echuwabo are among the widely spoken Bantu languages. In tourist areas and lodges, English is increasingly common. A few words of Portuguese (obrigado for thank you, bom dia for good morning) are warmly received.
Tipping
Tipping is appreciated and expected at tourist lodges and restaurants. Leave 10 to 15 percent in restaurants, and tip lodge staff, guides and boat operators daily. USD or MZN cash is both accepted for tips.
Food & Dining
Mozambican cuisine blends African, Portuguese and Indian influences. Peri-peri prawns (camarao) are the national dish and are exceptional in Maputo's Costa do Sol restaurant strip and along the Inhambane coast. Try matapa (cassava leaves with coconut and peanut sauce), fresh crayfish, crab and the grilled fish platter. Local cashew nuts are grown domestically and are outstanding.
Transport
Driving is on the left in Mozambique. The EN1 national highway connects Maputo to Beira and the north, but road quality degrades outside major cities. Bush tracks to coastal beaches require 4WD and are impassable after heavy rain. Check road conditions using your Roamix data before any coastal track departure.

Safety & Health in Mozambique
Mozambique is generally safe for tourists in the south and central regions. Petty crime exists in Maputo. The Cabo Delgado province in the far north has experienced insurgent activity since 2017, and travel to the northern Quirimbas and Pemba area requires checking the current security situation before visiting. Take standard precautions in Maputo.
Before any remote coastal or bush journey, confirm your Roamix eSIM is connected and all emergency contacts, lodge WhatsApp details and offline maps are downloaded. In Gorongosa and remote areas, you can be without signal for days. Share your full itinerary with your lodge and a home contact before each leg.
Health Note
Malaria is present throughout Mozambique and prophylaxis is essential. Yellow fever vaccination may be required if arriving from certain countries. Comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation is critical. The best medical facilities are in Maputo, with limited care in provincial cities.
Water Safety
Do not drink tap water anywhere in Mozambique. Use bottled water or treat water with purification tablets or a filter. In Maputo and lodges, bottled water is readily available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Mozambique eSIM, connectivity, and travel
What is the best eSIM for Mozambique?
Roamix is a top choice for Mozambique because it connects to Vodacom's 4G network, which covers Maputo and the entire southern coastal circuit from Inhambane to Vilanculos. You activate before flying and land already online at Maputo MPM, with no SIM registration required.
Do I need a SIM card for Mozambique?
You do not need a physical SIM for the south and coast. A Roamix Mozambique eSIM avoids the passport registration queue required for local Vodacom or Movitel SIMs and connects you on arrival. For extended rural or northern travel, a Movitel physical SIM bought in Nampula adds the best rural coverage.
What is the best carrier in Mozambique?
Vodacom Mozambique has the best 4G coverage in Maputo, Beira and the entire southern coastal circuit. Movitel has the widest geographic network and is the best choice for northern Mozambique, the Niassa Reserve and rural areas. Tmcel covers urban areas only.
Does Mozambique have 5G?
No. Mozambique does not have commercial 5G as of 2026. 4G LTE is the current maximum in major cities. Rural areas and most of the country operate on 3G or have no signal.
How do I set up an eSIM for Mozambique?
Buy a Roamix Mozambique plan, install the eSIM over wifi before departure, enable data roaming on the Roamix line, then land at Maputo MPM. The eSIM connects automatically to the local network with no registration needed.
Which airport do I fly into for Mozambique?
Maputo International Airport (MPM) is the main international gateway with connections to Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa and Lisbon. Beira (BEW) and Nampula (APL) are regional airports. Vilanculos has a domestic airport for the Bazaruto Archipelago.
Will my eSIM work at the Bazaruto Archipelago?
Very limited Vodacom signal exists on Bazaruto and Benguerra islands. Higher-end lodges have satellite wifi. Download all maps and lodge contact details from Vilanculos before taking the boat transfer, and save emergency contacts offline before the crossing.
How much data do I need for Mozambique?
A two-week southern coast trip needs 5 to 8 GB. The most important use is downloading large offline map packages for the coastal road, Gorongosa and the northern route in Maputo before each leg.
Do I need a visa for Mozambique?
Most Western nationalities including EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens need a visa for Mozambique. The e-Visa is strongly recommended, available at evisa.gov.mz for around USD 65. A visa on arrival is available at Maputo Airport but queues can be long.
Is Mozambique safe for tourists?
The south and central regions including Maputo, Inhambane, Bazaruto and Gorongosa are generally safe. Petty crime exists in Maputo city. Cabo Delgado province in the far north has experienced insurgent activity since 2017, and visitors should check current Foreign Office and State Department travel advisories before any northern travel.
What currency does Mozambique use?
Mozambique uses the Mozambican metical (MZN), roughly 60 to 65 MZN per USD. Cards are accepted at Maputo hotels and larger coastal lodges. Cash is essential for rural areas, island destinations and anything outside major towns.
What is the Bazaruto Archipelago?
The Bazaruto Archipelago is a national park of five coral islands off the coast of Vilanculos in central Mozambique, with turquoise shallow seas, dugong populations, reef diving and some of the most exclusive lodge accommodation in southern Africa. Humpback whales pass through September to November.
Can I see whale sharks in Mozambique?
Yes. Tofo Beach in the Inhambane province is one of the world's most reliable whale shark snorkelling and diving destinations, with animals present year-round and peak encounters from October to March. Manta rays are also present year-round at Manta Reef off Tofo.
What is the best time to visit Mozambique?
May to November is the dry season with the best wildlife viewing in Gorongosa, the calmest seas for diving and the most comfortable temperatures. June to September is peak humpback whale season. October to March is best for whale shark encounters at Tofo. The wet season from January to March is good for scenery but roads can flood.
