Ghana eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected in Accra, Kumasi and the Coast

TL;DR

Ghana is West Africa's most welcoming travel destination: vibrant Accra street markets, colonial slave-fort history on the Cape Coast, Ashanti cultural heritage in Kumasi, and elephants at Mole National Park in the north. MTN Ghana is the clear network leader with 4G coverage reaching 99 percent of the population and 5G launching in Accra and Kumasi. A Roamix Ghana eSIM activates before you land, avoiding the SIM-card queues at Kotoka International Airport. Data is affordable and mobile money is essential: nearly everything, from trotros to market stalls, now accepts MTN Mobile Money.

Key Takeaways

  • MTN Ghana leads on both urban speed and rural reach, including the north toward Mole National Park and the Tamale corridor. Choose MTN for any travel outside Accra.
  • A Roamix eSIM activates automatically before you fly, so you land connected at Kotoka International Airport without waiting at operator counters.
  • MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is the dominant payment ecosystem in Ghana. Even with a Roamix eSIM, download the MoMo app before travel to pay for food, taxis and small vendors.
  • Tamale and the Upper East and West regions have 4G but patchy coverage deep inside Mole National Park. Cache offline maps in Tamale before entering the park.
  • The Ghana cedi (GHS) depreciates periodically against USD and GBP. Budget in cedis once you arrive and use ATMs at banks rather than airport bureaux for better rates.

How to Stay Connected in Ghana

Wi-Fi is available at mid-range and upmarket hotels and guesthouses across Ghana but quality varies widely. Accra's Airport Residential Area and Osu have reliable café and restaurant Wi-Fi. In Kumasi and Cape Coast, hotel Wi-Fi works but speeds are inconsistent. In Tamale, Mole lodge and remote guesthouses, Wi-Fi is often slow or intermittent. Mobile data is the reliable constant.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM

Most travellers visiting Ghana, especially those moving between Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast and the north

Activates before departure, connects to MTN Ghana 4G on arrival, no SIM swapping. Best choice for convenience and reliable coverage.

MTN Ghana physical tourist SIM

Budget travellers who want the cheapest possible local data rates

Available at Kotoka Airport arrivals and in MTN shops in Accra and Kumasi. Requires passport registration. Cheap data bundles but queue time on arrival can be 30 to 45 minutes.

Hotel and guesthouse Wi-Fi

Evening use in your accommodation

Adequate for emails and WhatsApp in most Accra and Kumasi hotels. Unreliable in remote areas including Mole lodge. Not suitable as a primary connectivity source.

International roaming from home carrier

Short business trips to Accra only

International roaming rates in Ghana from most North American and European carriers are very expensive. A Roamix eSIM or local SIM is far more cost-effective.

A Roamix Ghana eSIM on MTN Ghana is the best option for most visitors. It activates before you fly, covers the full country from Accra to Mole, and costs a fraction of roaming charges. Grab it before your trip at roamix.app.

Mobile Networks in Ghana

Ghana has three main mobile operators: MTN Ghana, Vodafone Ghana and AirtelTigo (a merger of Airtel and Tigo). MTN dominates with 99 percent population coverage and the strongest rural penetration, including 4G reaching Tamale, Bolgatanga and the Brong-Ahafo region. Vodafone Ghana is a strong second in Accra and the Southern Region coastal corridor. AirtelTigo is the budget option favoured by younger locals but has weaker coverage north of Kumasi. A Roamix Ghana eSIM connects to MTN, the safest choice for visitors exploring beyond the capital.

MTN GhanaBest Coverage

Market leader with 4G coverage across all 16 regions. The only reliable choice for travel to Mole National Park, the Upper East, Upper West and Brong-Ahafo regions. MTN MoMo mobile money is the dominant payment platform nationwide.

Vodafone GhanaSecondary

Strong urban performer in Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Takoradi. Good 4G speeds in the Greater Accra and Central regions but coverage thins notably north of Kumasi.

AirtelTigoRegional

Budget option competitive on data pricing in Accra and Kumasi. Coverage weakens significantly beyond the south and is not recommended for northern Ghana travel.

Typical Speeds

4G in Accra delivers 20 to 80 Mbps. In regional cities like Kumasi and Cape Coast expect 15 to 50 Mbps. 5G is rolling out in Accra in 2025 to 2026.

5G Status

MTN Ghana is leading 5G deployment, with initial rollout in Accra central business district and parts of Kumasi. Nationwide 5G expansion continues through 2026.

MTN Ghana sells tourist SIM cards at Kotoka International Airport arrivals but queues can be long. A Roamix eSIM activated at home means you can call a taxi the moment you clear customs without waiting. Once settled, MTN MoMo registration requires a local phone number, so ask your hotel to help if you need full mobile money access.

Mole National Park in the Savanna Region has 4G at the main lodge and Larabanga gate, but signal drops inside the park on game drives. The Volta Region hills, Afadjato mountain trail and deep forest in Kakum National Park canopy walks also have gaps. Expect only 2G or no signal in some remote village areas.

Ghana uses LTE Bands 3, 7 and 20 for 4G. All recent unlocked iPhones (XS and newer) and Android flagships support these bands. Older budget phones may be limited to 3G in rural areas.

Data Usage Guide

Ghana's 4G network is fast enough for all travel essentials in cities. In Mole, on Volta Lake ferries or in hill villages, data may be limited, so front-load your downloads. MTN MoMo is cashless Ghana's backbone and works over any mobile data connection.

Download your Mole National Park game-drive map, Kakum canopy walk trail and Cape Coast Castle audio guide offline before leaving Accra or Kumasi.

  1. 1

Purchase a Roamix Ghana eSIM plan at roamix.app and download the QR code to your email.

  2. 2

On your device go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code.

  3. 3

Set the Roamix eSIM as your data line; keep your home SIM for calls and texts if needed.

  4. 4

Enable data roaming on the Roamix eSIM line in your cellular settings.

On landing at Kotoka International Airport, your eSIM will connect to MTN Ghana 4G automatically.

Arrival Checklist

1

Activate your Roamix Ghana eSIM 24 hours before departure so it is ready the moment you land at Kotoka.

2

Download Google Maps offline tiles for Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast and the northern corridor to Tamale.

3

Install WhatsApp before landing: it is the main communication channel for hotels, guides and guesthouses.

4

Note emergency numbers: 999 (general), 191 (police), 193 (ambulance), 192 (fire).

5

Withdraw cedis at a bank ATM on arrival (Ecobank or GCB Bank counters near arrivals) rather than using airport currency desks for better rates.

How locals communicate

WhatsApp is the dominant communication platform for Ghanaians across all age groups. Voice calls over WhatsApp are standard for international contacts. SMS is still used for MTN MoMo transaction confirmations. Facebook Messenger is popular for business communications.

Save your hotel, tour guide and taxi driver numbers as WhatsApp contacts on arrival. Calling local numbers from a foreign number is expensive; WhatsApp voice calls over data are free and the local standard.

Money & Payments in Ghana

The Ghana cedi (GHS) is the local currency. USD, GBP and EUR are accepted at major hotels and some tourist vendors but at unfavourable rates. Always transact in cedis for the best value. The cedi fluctuates; check the current rate before withdrawing large amounts.

Cash vs Card

Cash is essential for markets, trotros, small restaurants and rural areas. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at upmarket Accra hotels, supermarkets (Shoprite, Melcom) and some restaurants. Contactless payments are emerging in Accra but not widespread outside the capital.

ATMs

GCB Bank, Ecobank, Stanbic and Barclays Bank ATMs are reliable and dispense cedis. Airport ATMs charge a higher fee. Find a bank branch ATM in central Accra or near Kumasi central for the best transaction rates.

Payment Apps

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is the dominant mobile payment platform in Ghana with over 20 million registered users. AirtelTigo Money and Vodafone Cash also operate. MoMo works for paying taxis, market vendors, utility bills and even some restaurants. A local MTN SIM number is required to register.

Daily Budget

Budget travellers can manage GHS 150 to 300 per day (approximately USD 10 to 20). Mid-range travellers spending on comfortable guesthouses and restaurant meals should budget GHS 500 to 1,200 per day (USD 35 to 80). High-end Accra hotels and lodges at Mole run GHS 2,000 and above per night.

Data cost: MTN Ghana data bundles are very affordable. 10 GB costs approximately GHS 25 to 40 (under USD 3). A Roamix eSIM offers convenience and comparable pricing without the SIM registration process.

Getting Around Ghana

Ghana's transport network ranges from well-maintained highways connecting Accra, Kumasi and Kumasi to Tamale, to dirt tracks in the far north and Volta hills. Trotros (minibuses) are the local standard, cheap and ubiquitous but crowded. Ride-hailing apps Uber and Bolt work well in Accra. Long-distance coaches (VIP Bus, STC) link major cities with air-con.

Ride-hailing (Uber and Bolt)

Both Uber and Bolt operate in Accra and are app-dependent. Active Roamix data ensures you can book, track and pay without relying on airport Wi-Fi.

VIP and STC Long-Distance Buses

VIP Bus and STC coaches run Accra to Kumasi (3 to 4 hours) and Accra to Tamale (10 to 12 hours). Book ahead online. Most coaches have no on-board Wi-Fi; use mobile data on your Roamix eSIM.

Trotros (minibuses)

Trotros are the cheapest way to move between neighbourhoods and towns. No booking app; you flag them at roadside. Data useful for Google Maps navigation to the right station.

Domestic flights

Africa World Airlines and Passion Air fly Accra to Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi. Book via airline websites. Check-in often requires a printed or screenshots of your booking confirmation.

Regions & Travel

Ghana offers a remarkable range of experiences within a compact geography: the cosmopolitan energy of Accra, Ashanti court culture in Kumasi, the sobering slave-fort history of the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, lush rainforest in Kakum National Park, and big-game savanna at Mole National Park in the north. The country sits on the Greenwich Meridian (0 degrees longitude) and is one of the most politically stable and English-speaking-friendly destinations in West Africa.

Best time to visit: November to March is the driest and most pleasant period across southern Ghana, with clear skies and lower humidity. The north (Tamale, Mole) is best visited November to April before the Harmattan dust season peaks. The rainy season from April to October turns the south green but makes roads to Mole muddy. Kumasi and the Ashanti Region are accessible year-round.

Greater Accra

The capital region and economic heart of Ghana. Accra blends beach neighbourhoods like Labadi and Bojo Beach with the hip Osu and Labone bar-and-restaurant districts, the Jamestown lighthouse and fishing harbour, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Kotoka International Airport is here.

Signal: Excellent 4G and emerging 5G across Accra. MTN and Vodafone both deliver fast speeds in central Accra, Osu, Airport Residential Area and East Legon.

Spring

March to May brings the first rains back to southern Ghana in April and May, refreshing and greening the landscape. March is still dry and pleasant. The Ashanti Region's festivals begin to pick up in late March. The coast heats up by April to May. This is a quiet travel period with good prices and few tourists, except around Independence Day on March 6.

Summer

June to August brings the main rainy season in southern Ghana, with heavy afternoon showers in Accra and the Central Region. The north is drier in June but transitions to its own rainy season by July. Temperatures remain warm at 27 to 32 degrees Celsius. The Harmattan (dry dusty wind from the Sahara) is absent. This is actually a good time for the Volta Region, where rivers and waterfalls are at their fullest.

Fall

September to November is a shoulder period in southern Ghana: a brief dry spell in October (the lesser dry season) followed by minor rains returning in October to November. Temperatures hold at 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. The north begins drying out in October, making Mole National Park increasingly accessible. This is a good travel window overall.

Winter

December to February is high season and the best weather across Ghana. The south has its major dry season with low humidity and sunshine. December coincides with Accra's Year of Return festivities and is very busy. January and February see the Harmattan in the north, with dusty haze reducing visibility on the Accra to Tamale road and in Mole. Cooler evenings at 20 to 24 degrees Celsius.

Remote Work from Ghana

Accra is emerging as a remote-work destination, particularly in the Cantonments, Labone and Airport Residential Area neighbourhoods where co-working spaces and fast café Wi-Fi are available. Accra has a growing digital nomad community partly driven by the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda and the diaspora investment scene.

MTN 4G in Accra delivers speeds sufficient for video calls and cloud work. 5G is rolling out in 2025 to 2026 and will improve further. Outside Accra and Kumasi, remote work is challenging due to variable connectivity.

Accra co-working spaces like Impact Hub Accra, Innohub and Kumasi Hive in Kumasi offer reliable high-speed internet, meeting rooms and a startup community. Book a day pass in advance through their websites.

Local Tips for Ghana

Language

English is the official language and widely spoken across Ghana, including in markets, hotels and government offices. Twi is the most widely spoken local language in southern Ghana and Ashanti. Basic Twi greetings (Akwaaba means welcome, Medaase means thank you) are warmly received by locals.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. At restaurants, 10 percent is fair if service is not included. Taxi and Uber drivers appreciate rounding up. Tour guides at Mole, Cape Coast and Kakum expect a tip of GHS 20 to 50 for a half-day tour. Hotel staff appreciate GHS 5 to 10 per day.

Food & Dining

Ghanaian cuisine is hearty and flavourful. Jollof rice (the original West African jollof, fiercely contested with Nigeria), fufu with light or groundnut soup, kelewele (spiced fried plantain), banku with tilapia, and waakye (rice and beans) are staples. Osu Oxford Street in Accra has everything from traditional chop bars to international restaurants. Kumasi Kejetia Market is the place for local street food.

Transport

In Accra use Uber or Bolt for most journeys; agree prices upfront in trotros. For Cape Coast, Kumasi and Tamale, VIP Bus or STC coaches are comfortable and affordable. Rent a 4WD vehicle for Mole National Park; the road from Tamale to Mole is partially unpaved.

Safety & Health in Ghana

Ghana is one of the safest countries in West Africa for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare, though petty theft and bag-snatching can occur in crowded areas like Makola Market in Accra and Kejetia in Kumasi. Political stability is strong and elections are peaceful. Exercise standard urban caution.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active at all times in Ghana, particularly when travelling between cities or into Mole National Park. Being reachable in an emergency or being able to call for roadside assistance is important on long rural drives in the north.

Health Note

Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers (a Yellow Fever card may be checked on arrival). Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all parts of Ghana, especially the north. Hepatitis A, Typhoid and routine vaccines are advised. Medical facilities in Accra (Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Trust Hospital) are adequate; facilities in rural areas are limited.

Water Safety

Tap water is generally not safe to drink. Stick to bottled water (Voltic, Aquafina and Fan Ice sachets are available everywhere) or use a water purification filter. Ice in tourist restaurants is usually made from treated water but confirm in local eateries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ghana eSIM, connectivity, and travel

Do I need an eSIM or a physical SIM for Ghana?

Both work in Ghana. A Roamix eSIM is more convenient: you activate it before leaving home, it connects to MTN Ghana automatically on landing, and you skip the SIM registration queue at Kotoka Airport. Physical MTN and Vodafone SIMs are available at the airport if you prefer.

Which mobile network is best in Ghana?

MTN Ghana is the best network for most visitors. It has the widest 4G coverage across all 16 regions, including northern Ghana and Mole National Park, and the most reliable signal outside Accra. Vodafone Ghana is a strong second in Accra and the coastal Central Region.

How do I set up a Roamix eSIM for Ghana?

Purchase a plan at roamix.app, scan the QR code in your phone's eSIM settings (Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM), set the Roamix line as your data line and enable data roaming. Your eSIM will connect to MTN Ghana automatically on landing.

Is there internet censorship in Ghana?

No. Ghana has a fully open internet. All apps including WhatsApp, Google, Instagram, FaceTime, YouTube and X work without any restrictions.

Does my phone work in Ghana?

Most modern unlocked phones work in Ghana on 4G LTE. Ghana uses LTE Bands 3, 7 and 20. iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy and Pixel devices are all compatible. Budget older phones may be limited to 3G in some areas.

What is the best time to visit Ghana?

November to March is the best period for most of Ghana, with dry weather in the south and excellent game viewing in Mole National Park. December is the busiest and most expensive month due to the Year of Return festivities in Accra. January to February are ideal for Mole but the Harmattan dust haze can reduce visibility.

Do I need a visa to visit Ghana?

Most nationalities require a visa for Ghana. An e-visa is available through the Ghana Immigration Service portal (ghana.gov.gh/immigration) and is the standard way to apply. Apply at least one week before travel. Visa on arrival is not routinely available.

Is it safe to use mobile data in Ghana?

Yes. Mobile data networks in Ghana are stable and secure. Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi in hotels and cafes for added security, but your Roamix eSIM data connection is private and does not require a VPN.

What currency is used in Ghana and how do I access cash?

The Ghana cedi (GHS) is the currency. GCB Bank, Ecobank and Stanbic ATMs dispense cedis reliably. Avoid airport currency desks; use bank ATMs in central Accra for the best rates. USD and GBP are accepted at major hotels but at poor rates.

What happens to mobile signal at Mole National Park?

MTN Ghana 4G covers the main Mole Motel and the Larabanga gate. Signal drops on game drives inside the park's interior. Download Google Maps offline tiles and your safari route map before leaving Tamale.

What is MTN MoMo and do I need it?

MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) is Ghana's dominant cashless payment system with over 20 million registered users. It requires a local MTN phone number to register. Many vendors and taxis accept MoMo; ask your hotel to help set it up. A Roamix eSIM gives data but not a local phone number, so MoMo registration requires a separate local SIM if needed.

Is Wi-Fi available at Kotoka International Airport?

Yes, Kotoka International Airport in Accra has free Wi-Fi in the main terminal, though speeds can be variable. A Roamix eSIM activated before departure is more reliable, giving you a working connection before you even clear customs.

What emergency numbers should I know in Ghana?

The main emergency numbers in Ghana are 999 (general emergency), 191 (police), 193 (ambulance) and 192 (fire). The 999 number can be used from any mobile network.

What is the Chale Wote Street Art Festival?

Chale Wote is an annual street art and culture festival held in August in the Jamestown neighbourhood of Accra. It transforms the historic district with murals, performance art, spoken word and music. Entry is free and it is one of Africa's most vibrant urban arts events.

Can I use Uber or Bolt in Accra?

Yes. Both Uber and Bolt operate in Accra and are the recommended way to get around the city. Bolt is usually cheaper for short rides. Both apps require a working data connection, which your Roamix eSIM provides from the moment you land.
