How to Install eSIM Manually Without a QR Code

If the QR code scan isn't working, manual installation is your reliable fallback — and it produces an identical result. You just need two pieces of text from your Roamix account: the SM-DP+ address and the activation code. No camera, no second device required.

When Should I Use Manual Installation?

Manual installation is the right choice when:

  • QR code scanning keeps failing despite trying different distances and brightness settings
  • You only have one device and can't display the QR code on a second screen to scan
  • You're copying codes from an email on the same phone you're installing the eSIM on
  • The QR code image won't load in your email or dashboard
  • You're at the airport and need a faster, more reliable method

It's not a workaround — many travelers prefer manual installation because it's faster and doesn't depend on camera angle or screen brightness.

What Is an SM-DP+ Address?

The SM-DP+ address (Subscription Manager Data Preparation+) is the server address your phone connects to in order to download your eSIM profile. Think of it as the URL for your eSIM — your phone uses it to locate and retrieve your specific plan from Roamix's provisioning server.

It looks something like this: rsp.example-provider.com

The activation code is a long alphanumeric string that uniquely identifies your specific eSIM profile on that server, like a password that pairs with the SM-DP+ address.

Both codes are in your Roamix order confirmation email and on the My eSIMs page of your dashboard.

Steps on iPhone

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions)
  3. Tap Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan)
  4. Tap Enter Details Manually (or Use Details Manually on older iOS)
  5. In the SM-DP+ Address field: paste the SM-DP+ address from your Roamix email or dashboard
  6. In the Activation Code field: paste the activation code
  7. Leave the Confirmation Code field blank — Roamix does not require one
  8. Tap Next
  9. Your iPhone will connect to the provisioning server and download the eSIM profile (takes 1–3 minutes)
  10. Label the plan "Roamix" or "Travel" when prompted
  11. Tap Done
Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi throughout this process. The download can fail mid-way if Wi-Fi drops.

Steps on Android

The exact wording varies by manufacturer, but the flow is the same:

Samsung Galaxy

  1. Settings → Connections → SIM Card Manager → Add SIM
  2. Tap Scan QR code → then look for "Enter activation code" or "Enter manually" option
  3. Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code in the respective fields
  4. Tap Connect or Confirm

Google Pixel

  1. Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → tap +
  2. Tap Download a SIM instead
  3. Tap Next
  4. On the QR code scan screen, look for "Need help?" or "Enter manually"
  5. Paste your SM-DP+ address and activation code
  6. Tap Activate

Other Android

During the QR code scan step, look for a link or button that says:

  • "Enter manually"
  • "I don't have a QR code"
  • "Enter activation code"

Tap it, enter both codes, and proceed.

Both the QR code and the manual codes are always shown together on the same page in your dashboard. If you can see the QR code image, you can also see the SM-DP+ address and activation code displayed as text below it.

Is Manual Install as Reliable as QR Code?

Yes — completely. The QR code is simply a visual encoding of the same SM-DP+ address and activation code. Scanning it or typing it manually sends identical information to the provisioning server. The eSIM profile that gets installed on your device is identical either way.
