Hungary has a mature four-operator mobile market with strong competition driving high speeds and broad coverage. Magyar Telekom (the T-Mobile Hungary network) is the largest operator and 2025 Ookla fastest 5G network with median speeds above 129 Mbps. Vodafone Hungary competes strongly in urban areas; Yettel (formerly Telenor) and One HU (formerly Digi Mobil) complete the market. A Roamix Hungary eSIM connects you to the best available local network on arrival at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport.
Hungary's largest operator and 2025 Ookla fastest mobile network award winner with median 5G speeds above 129 Mbps. Widest 5G deployment and strongest rural 4G coverage across the Great Plain, Transdanubia and the Northern Highlands.
Strong urban 5G competitor in Budapest and major cities. Excellent coverage along main transport corridors and at Lake Balaton. Competitive speeds in Budapest's business and tourist districts.
Formerly Telenor Hungary; rebranded Yettel after the PPF Group acquisition. Solid 4G and expanding 5G coverage in urban areas and along major routes. Good choice for border regions near Austria and Slovakia.
Formerly Digi Mobil; aggressive pricing and expanding infrastructure. Good 4G in Budapest and main cities; coverage outside urban areas is thinner than the top two operators.
Typical Speeds
5G in Budapest delivers 80 to 200 Mbps; 4G LTE averages 20 to 60 Mbps nationally. Magyar Telekom leads on 5G speed; all four operators provide competitive 4G coverage.
5G Status
5G is deployed in Budapest (all districts), Debrecen, Miskolc, Pecs, Gyor and Eger. Magyar Telekom has the widest 5G footprint nationally.
Magyar Telekom consistently delivers the fastest speeds in Budapest and has the strongest rural reach. For travel beyond Budapest to the Great Plain and Northern Highlands, Telekom is the recommended network if you have a choice.
Coverage throughout Hungary is comprehensive for all tourist purposes. The most remote sections of the Bukk National Park forest interior and some valleys in the Matra highlands can have reduced signal. All main attractions, towns and transport corridors have solid 4G or 5G.
Hungary uses standard European LTE bands (B3, B7, B20) and 5G sub-6GHz (n78). All modern unlocked European, US and Asian smartphones are fully compatible.
Data Usage Guide
Data needs in Hungary are moderate, focused on navigation, transit apps and social media. Budapest's city-wide connectivity means there is never a shortage of data when you need it. Rural travel adds offline map downloads as a precaution.
Download offline Google Maps for the Hortobagy National Park, the Bukk National Park and remote Balaton north shore wine villages before heading out; occasional rural signal gaps make pre-downloaded maps valuable.

Get your Hungary eSIMMoney & Payments in Hungary
The Hungarian Forint (HUF) is the local currency; Hungary is in the EU but retains the Forint rather than the euro. EUR is sometimes quoted by tourist businesses but paying in HUF always gives a better rate. Exchange at banks or reputable exchange offices; avoid street changers.
Cash vs Card
Cards are widely accepted in Budapest hotels, restaurants and shops. Smaller village restaurants, market stalls and rural guesthouses may prefer cash. Carry HUF for local markets, thermal bath entry and countryside dining.
ATMs
OTP Bank, Raiffeisen and K&H Bank ATMs are widespread throughout Hungary. Avoid airport currency exchange counters and third-party ATMs with high advertised rates; use bank ATMs.
Payment Apps
Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted at most supermarkets, pharmacies and modern restaurants in Budapest. Smaller establishments and rural areas prefer card or cash.
Daily Budget
Budapest budget travel costs EUR 40 to 70 per day (hostels, local food). Mid-range visits including a 4-star hotel run EUR 80 to 150 per day. Wine country stays and spa weekends at Balaton or Heviz are EUR 100 to 200 per day.
Data cost: Local prepaid SIMs cost HUF 2,000 to 5,000 (EUR 5 to 13) for tourist data packages. A Roamix plan is competitive and eliminates any arrival SIM hunt.
Getting Around Hungary
Hungary has an excellent public transport network anchored by MÁV-START trains and Volánbusz coaches. Budapest has a comprehensive metro, tram and bus network. The country is compact and all major destinations are within 3 hours of the capital by train. A Roamix eSIM is useful for checking MÁV train schedules, navigating Budapest's transit network and using the BKK app for city transport.
MÁV-START trains
Hungary's national rail network connects Budapest with Debrecen (2.5 hours), Pecs (3 hours), Eger (2 hours) and all major towns. Check schedules and buy tickets on the MÁV Start app over Roamix data; InterCity trains require seat reservations.
Budapest public transport (BKK)
Budapest has four metro lines, extensive trams (line 2 along the Danube is one of Europe's most scenic), bus and trolleybus routes. Use the BKK Futar app over Roamix data for real-time arrivals and the Menetrend.hu app for journey planning.
Intercity buses (Volánbusz)
Volánbusz coaches connect Budapest Nepliget terminal with Lake Balaton resorts, Eger and smaller towns not well-served by rail. Book over Roamix data at volanbusz.hu.
Rental car
Car rental is practical for exploring the Balaton north shore, the Puszta and the Northern Highlands at your own pace. Download offline maps for Hungary before setting out from Budapest; motorway coverage is complete but minor rural roads can be patchy.
Regions & Travel
Hungary offers a compact but extraordinarily rich travel experience: the twin cities of Buda and Pest straddling the Danube, Central Europe's largest lake at Balaton, medieval walled cities like Eger and Pecs, the extraordinary flatlands of the Puszta and a thermal bath culture unlike anywhere else in Europe. Connectivity is excellent throughout.
Best time to visit: April to June and September to October are ideal: mild temperatures, fewer crowds and excellent conditions for outdoor sightseeing. Budapest Christmas markets from late November are spectacular. July and August are hot (30 to 38C) but Lake Balaton is at its best for swimming.
Budapest and the Danube Bend
Hungary's capital and one of Europe's most beautiful cities, with Buda Castle, the Parliament Building, the Chain Bridge, the Great Market Hall, Szechenyi and Gellert thermal baths and the ruin bar district (romkert) in the Jewish Quarter. The Danube Bend north of Budapest takes in Szentendre, Visegrad and Esztergom.
Signal: Exceptional 5G coverage across all Budapest districts. The metro, underground stations and trams are all covered. All four operators maintain peak network density in central Budapest.

The north shore wine villages (Balatonfured, Tihany Peninsula, Badacsony) are more scenic; the south shore (Siofok, Balatonlelle) is more popular for swimming beaches. Veszprem is the inland cultural centre.
Signal: All four operators provide strong 4G along the Balaton shores and at main resort towns. Tihany Peninsula and Badacsony have solid coverage. Signal can be intermittent on the open lake.

Debrecen is Hungary's second city, gateway to the Puszta and site of the famous Flower Carnival.
Signal: Magyar Telekom provides strong 4G and 5G in Debrecen city and along main roads through the Alföld. The Hortobagy plain has 4G at main visitor points; remote grassland tracks can be patchy.

Language
Hungarian (Magyar) is one of Europe's most challenging languages for Western speakers, being in the Uralic family rather than Indo-European. However, English is widely spoken in Budapest, Lake Balaton resorts and tourist towns. Basic greetings in Hungarian (szia, koszonom) are warmly appreciated.
Tipping
Tipping is standard in Hungary: 10 to 15 percent at restaurants and cafes. It is customary to say the amount you wish to pay inclusive of the tip to the server rather than leaving money on the table. Tip taxi drivers by rounding up.
Food & Dining
Hungarian cuisine is hearty and paprika-rich. Essential dishes include goulash (gulyas, a paprika-spiced beef stew), chicken paprikash (paprikas csirke), lángos (deep-fried dough with toppings), kürtoskalács (chimney cake, especially at Christmas), halaszle (fisherman's soup) and the Eger wine region's Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood red wine).
