Gibraltar eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected on the Rock

TL;DR

Gibraltar is a 6.8-square-kilometre British Overseas Territory perched on a dramatic limestone promontory at the entrance to the Mediterranean. It is known for its Barbary macaques (Europe's only wild primates), wartime tunnels, a cable car to the top of the Rock, and a curious mix of British pubs and Spanish tapas bars. Gibtelecom operates the main 4G and 5G network; the territory has its own independent telecommunications infrastructure separate from both Spain and the UK. EU Roam Like At Home does not apply to Gibraltar post-Brexit: neither UK nor EU roaming deals cover the Rock, making a Roamix Gibraltar eSIM the smartest pre-paid connectivity option.

Key Takeaways

  • Gibraltar is NOT covered by EU Roam Like At Home and NOT covered by UK domestic roaming. Roaming charges from both EU and UK carriers apply here. A Roamix Gibraltar eSIM avoids those charges entirely.
  • Gibtelecom is the only full-service mobile network in Gibraltar, offering 4G and 5G. Coverage is complete across the entire territory.
  • The Rock is walkable in a day: the cable car, Barbary macaques, St Michael's Cave and the WWII tunnels are all within walking distance of each other.
  • Gibraltar pound (GIP) is at par with British pound (GBP); both circulate freely. Euros are accepted at most businesses but at an unfavourable rate. Sterling is usually best for cash.
  • Crossing the frontier into Spain at La Linea de la Concepcion is straightforward but queues can be long on weekends. Download offline maps on both sides of the border before crossing.

How to Stay Connected in Gibraltar

Wi-Fi is good quality at Gibraltar hotels, restaurants and the airport. The territory's small size and modern infrastructure mean hotel Wi-Fi is generally reliable. Public Wi-Fi spots exist in Casemates Square and at Ocean Village marina. Mobile data on Gibtelecom 5G is so fast that most visitors rely on their phone's data plan over public Wi-Fi anyway.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM

All visitors to Gibraltar, particularly those arriving from EU or UK with carrier SIMs

The only cost-effective option that works seamlessly in Gibraltar without EU or UK roaming charges. Activates before departure, connects to Gibtelecom 5G on arrival.

Gibtelecom physical SIM or tourist SIM

Visitors staying a week or more who prefer a physical card

Gibtelecom SIM cards are available from their shop on Main Street. Requires passport identification. Pay-as-you-go bundles are available but the shop has limited hours.

Hotel Wi-Fi

Evening use in your accommodation

Good quality at most Gibraltar hotels. The Rock Hotel and O'Callaghan hotels have reliable broadband Wi-Fi. Not a substitute for mobile data when exploring.

EU or UK carrier roaming

Not recommended

Both EU Roam Like At Home and UK domestic roaming do not apply in Gibraltar. International roaming rates from EU and UK carriers will apply and are expensive for extended data use.

A Roamix Gibraltar eSIM is the best choice for any visitor. It connects to Gibtelecom 5G at full local speeds and avoids the roaming charges that both EU and UK carriers levy in Gibraltar. Get yours at roamix.app before departure.

Mobile Networks in Gibraltar

Gibraltar has two telecommunications providers: Gibtelecom, the dominant operator with full 2G, 4G and 5G coverage across the territory, and GibFibre, which focuses on fixed-line broadband and does not operate a public mobile network. Gibtelecom is therefore the only realistic choice for mobile data in Gibraltar. The network is modern, fast and reliable given the territory's small and flat footprint. A Roamix Gibraltar eSIM connects to Gibtelecom and delivers 5G speeds across the Rock.

GibtelecomBest Coverage

The only full mobile network operator in Gibraltar. Provides 4G and 5G across the entire territory including the port, town centre, Upper Rock and the frontier area. Roaming agreements with UK and EU carriers exist but post-Brexit roaming charges apply to those visiting on home-carrier roaming.

GibFibreSecondary

GibFibre provides fixed-line fibre broadband to homes and businesses and does not operate a public mobile network. Not relevant for travellers seeking mobile data coverage.

Typical Speeds

Gibtelecom 5G delivers 100 to 400 Mbps in central Gibraltar, Main Street and the cable car area. 4G fallback delivers 50 to 150 Mbps everywhere including the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.

5G Status

5G is live across Gibraltar via Gibtelecom. The territory's small size means coverage is complete with no gaps.

Gibraltar uses UK-style Type G plugs and 230V power. If you are arriving from Spain with a two-pin charger, you will need a UK plug adapter. Most hotels in Gibraltar provide adapters but pack one to be safe.

Coverage is excellent across all of Gibraltar given its tiny 6.8 sq km size. The upper sections of the Rock near St Michael's Cave and the WWII tunnels may see slightly reduced speeds indoors but outdoor signal is strong throughout.

Gibraltar uses standard EU-compatible LTE and 5G NR bands. All unlocked iPhones (XS and newer) and recent Android devices support the network. Gibraltar operates at 230V on UK-style Type G sockets.

Data Usage Guide

Gibraltar is compact and fully covered by 5G, so data usage is more about what you stream than whether you have signal. The only real data prep needed is downloading offline maps for the brief moments inside the WWII tunnel system where indoor walls may reduce signal.

Download the Upper Rock Nature Reserve map and St Michael's Cave audio guide offline before heading up the Rock. Inside tunnel sections signal can fluctuate.

How to Set Up a Gibraltar eSIM

Install and activate your Roamix Gibraltar eSIM before leaving home. Given Gibraltar's unique roaming status (neither UK nor EU coverage zones), activating before departure is especially important.

All recent eSIM-compatible devices work in Gibraltar. Check your phone supports the LTE and 5G NR bands used by Gibtelecom. iPhone XS and newer, recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel 4 and newer are all compatible.

  1. 1

Purchase a Roamix Gibraltar eSIM plan at roamix.app and receive the QR code by email.

  2. 2

Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, and scan the QR code.

  3. 3

Set the Roamix eSIM as your data line; keep your home SIM for calls and texts if needed.

  4. 4

Enable data roaming on the Roamix eSIM line in your cellular settings.

  5. 5

On arrival in Gibraltar your eSIM will connect to Gibtelecom 4G or 5G automatically.

APN Note

APN is set automatically by the Roamix profile. If data does not connect on arrival, check Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data Network and confirm the APN matches the Roamix activation email.

Troubleshooting

If your eSIM does not connect, toggle Airplane Mode on and off. If still no signal, go to Settings, Carrier, select Gibtelecom manually. Note: when you step across the frontier into Spain, your eSIM will switch to Spanish carriers (Movistar, Orange). It switches back to Gibtelecom immediately on returning to Gibraltar.

Arrival Checklist

1

Activate your Roamix Gibraltar eSIM before departure: EU Roam Like At Home and UK domestic roaming both do not apply in Gibraltar, so roaming on your home SIM will be charged at international rates.

2

Download offline Google Maps tiles for both Gibraltar and the Spanish town of La Linea de la Concepcion if you plan to cross the border.

3

Pack a UK Type G plug adapter if you are coming from continental Europe. Gibraltar uses UK sockets.

4

Note emergency numbers: 999 or 112 (general), 199 (police), 190 (fire and ambulance).

5

Gibraltar airport is uniquely located: Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road between the town and Spain, crosses the runway. The road closes for every aircraft movement. Allow extra time when heading to or from the frontier if a flight is due.

How locals communicate

Gibraltarians use WhatsApp as the primary messaging platform, mirroring both UK and Spanish habits. English is the dominant language and most signage is in English. Spanish is widely spoken and useful for crossing into La Linea.

If you plan to call Gibtelecom landlines in Gibraltar (hotels, restaurants, tour operators), dial +350 followed by the 8-digit number. Gibraltar numbers starting with 200 are landlines; mobile numbers begin with 5.

Seville is approximately 200 kilometres from Gibraltar by road. A Roamix eSIM works in Gibraltar; in southern Spain your device will roam onto Spanish networks.

Visa & Entry for Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. EU and EEA citizens (including Spanish nationals from nearby La Linea) may enter Gibraltar freely post-Brexit under the Windsor Framework arrangements, with a valid national ID card or passport. UK, US, Canadian, Australian and most other Western nationals may enter visa-free for tourism. A valid passport is required; Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen Area.

Visa on arrivalAvailable

eVisa / ETA

No e-visa or ETA is required for most Western nationalities. EU citizens use national ID cards. UK and Commonwealth citizens use passports. Check the Gibraltar Government website (gibraltar.gov.gi) for your specific nationality.

Passport validity

Passport should be valid for the duration of your stay. Gibraltar does not require 6-month validity beyond travel date for most nationalities.

Onward ticket

Onward or return tickets are not normally checked for short tourism visits. Gibraltar is a day-trip or short-stay destination for most visitors.

Gibraltar's border with Spain at Winston Churchill Avenue opens and closes around flight movements from GIB airport. Download offline maps for both Gibraltar and La Linea before crossing.

Entry requirements for Gibraltar can differ from those for the UK. Verify current requirements at the Gibraltar Government website before travel.

Money & Payments in Gibraltar

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar pound (GIP) at par with British sterling (GBP). Both currencies circulate interchangeably. Euros are accepted at many shops and restaurants but usually at a less favourable exchange rate. Keep GBP or GIP for best value. Gibraltar also benefits from a duty-free retail status, making tobacco, alcohol and electronics notably cheaper than in Spain or the UK.

Cash vs Card

Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere in Gibraltar: restaurants, shops, taxis and the cable car. Contactless payments are standard. Carry some GBP or GIP cash for small purchases at market stalls and if you cross into La Linea.

ATMs

Several ATMs dispensing GIP/GBP are available on Main Street and at Casemates Square (Barclays, NatWest, Lloyds branch ATMs). Fees may apply for non-UK-issued cards. Draw GBP rather than allowing dynamic currency conversion.

Payment Apps

Revolut is widely used in Gibraltar for multi-currency management and seamless GBP/EUR switching when crossing to Spain. Apple Pay and Google Pay work at contactless terminals across the territory.

Daily Budget

Gibraltar is moderately expensive by Southern European standards. A budget daily spend is GBP 50 to 80 covering a guesthouse, meals in local pubs and entry to the Upper Rock (cable car and attractions). Mid-range visitors spending on nicer restaurants and the Rock Hotel should budget GBP 120 to 200 per day. Duty-free shops can offset some costs.

Data cost: A Roamix Gibraltar eSIM costs a fraction of what international roaming charges from EU or UK carriers would apply. Given Gibraltar's unique roaming status, a Roamix eSIM represents genuine savings for any visitor.

Getting Around Gibraltar

Gibraltar is small enough to walk across in under an hour. The main town and cable car base station are easily reached on foot from the airport and frontier. Public buses (the GibBus service) cover the main routes. Taxis are available but rarely necessary for fit visitors. The Upper Rock is reached by cable car (recommended) or on foot via the Mediterranean Steps path.

Walking

The most common way to explore Gibraltar. The entire town centre, Upper Rock cable car base and Europa Point are reachable on foot. Gibtelecom 4G and 5G provide constant navigation throughout.

Cable Car

The Gibraltar Cable Car runs from the town centre to the top of the Rock near the macaque viewing area. Book tickets at the base station. Your Roamix eSIM provides data throughout the ride and at the summit.

GibBus Public Buses

GibBus operates routes connecting the town centre, Catalan Bay, Europa Point and the frontier. Fares are cheap and routes are shown on the GibBus app. Data useful for checking schedules and waiting times.

Taxis

Taxis are available at the airport, frontier and Casemates Square. Fares are regulated. Short distances rarely warrant a taxi given the walkable size of the territory.

Regions & Travel

Gibraltar packs a remarkable amount into its 6.8 square kilometres: a well-preserved British colonial town centre on Main Street, a world-class natural rock formation rising to 426 metres, Barbary macaques (the famous Gibraltar apes), 30 kilometres of WWII tunnels, St Michael's Cave with its dramatic stalactite cathedral, and one of Europe's busiest commercial ports. Crossing into La Linea de la Concepcion on the Spanish side is easy and adds tapas bars and the Costa del Sol to your itinerary.

Best time to visit: April to October offers the best weather, with warm Mediterranean summers peaking in July and August at around 28 to 31 degrees Celsius. Spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) are ideal: warm, less crowded and with clear views from the top of the Rock. Winter (November to March) is mild at 12 to 16 degrees Celsius but often cloudy and windy.

Town Centre and Main Street

The commercial heart of Gibraltar, Main Street runs north to south and blends duty-free shops, traditional British pubs, tapas bars and colonial-era architecture. Casemates Square at the north end is the main public square with restaurants and outdoor seating. Grand Casemates Gate and Landport Tunnel are historic entry points to the town.

Signal: Excellent Gibtelecom 5G throughout the town centre and Main Street. The fastest speeds in the territory.

Signal: Excellent Gibtelecom 4G and 5G at Europa Point. Open location with no obstructions provides maximum signal strength.

Europa Point Bus 3 runs from Town Centre. Check the GibBus timetable on your Roamix data before heading south to avoid a long wait.

The Moorish Castle

Historic Monument

Upper Rock

The Tower of Homage of the Moorish Castle dominates the northern face of the Rock and is one of the best-preserved Moorish military structures in Western Europe, dating from the 8th century. Entry is included in the Upper Rock pass.

Signal: Good Gibtelecom 4G in the castle tower area. Open battlements provide clear signal.

Spring

March to May sees Gibraltar wake up with spring flowers on the Rock's eastern face. Temperatures rise from 14 to 20 degrees Celsius. The cave concert season begins in May. Spring is an excellent time to visit before the summer crowds: comfortable temperatures, clear Strait views and manageable queues at the Upper Rock attractions.

Summer

July and August are warm and sunny in Gibraltar, averaging 28 to 31 degrees Celsius with low rainfall. The territory is busy with British and Spanish summer visitors. The easterly Levant wind can bring low cloud and mist to the top of the Rock even in summer, obscuring views. Early morning is the clearest time for the cable car.

Fall

September and October are the most pleasant months in Gibraltar: warm at 22 to 26 degrees Celsius, less crowded than summer, with stable clear weather and excellent visibility across the Strait to Morocco. The cultural calendar includes National Day on September 10, the literary festival and food events in October.

Winter

November to February is mild by European standards at 12 to 16 degrees Celsius but can be cloudy and rainy. The Rock often wears a cap of cloud in winter. The Christmas market in December adds warmth to the town centre. Winter is quiet and inexpensive for accommodation. The Gibraltar Marathon is held in February.

Remote Work from Gibraltar

Gibraltar is an active fintech and online gaming hub with a growing digital economy. Co-working spaces and serviced offices exist but the territory is primarily a short-visit destination. The small size makes it less practical for extended remote work stays compared to nearby Malaga or Seville.

Gibtelecom 5G and excellent hotel Wi-Fi mean connectivity is not a limiting factor. Gibraltar's timezone (CET/CEST) aligns with European business hours perfectly.

WeWork and serviced office providers are not present in Gibraltar. Visit Rock Business Centre on Devil's Tower Road or inquire at Ocean Village for short-term desk rentals. Most cafes on Main Street have Wi-Fi and are suitable for a few hours of work.

Local Tips for Gibraltar

Language

English is the official language and used in all government, commerce and signage. Llanito, a unique local dialect blending English and Andalusian Spanish, is spoken by Gibraltarians at home. Spanish is widely spoken and essential for crossing into La Linea. Most Gibraltarians are completely bilingual.

Tipping

Tipping follows UK custom. Ten percent is appreciated in restaurants if service is not included. Bar staff and taxi drivers appreciate rounding up. The Cable Car and Upper Rock ticket booth do not expect tips.

Food & Dining

Gibraltar's food scene blends British pub staples (fish and chips, Sunday roasts at the Star Bar on Parliament Street) with Andalusian Spanish flavour (tapas, fresh seafood, tortilla). The calentita, a baked chickpea polenta loaf, is Gibraltar's unique national dish. Queensway Quay marina has upmarket waterfront dining. La Linea across the border offers authentic Spanish tapas at half the Gibraltar price.

Transport

Walk wherever possible. The territory is too small for driving to make sense; parking is extremely limited. For the Upper Rock, take the cable car from the base station near the Alameda Gardens. Bus number 3 runs to Europa Point. Taxis wait at the frontier and at Casemates Square.

Safety & Health in Gibraltar

Gibraltar is one of the safest territories in Europe. Crime is extremely rare and the territory has a strong police presence. The main hazard is the macaques on the Upper Rock: they are intelligent, bold and will grab food, bags or sunglasses from tourists. Keep valuables secured and do not feed them. The cable car and Rock paths are well-maintained.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active throughout your visit. If you are hiking the Mediterranean Steps or exploring the eastern cliffs, signal from Gibtelecom 4G is present but having a working connection is important in case of a slip or injury on steep paths.

Health Note

Gibraltar has a high-quality NHS-equivalent health system at St Bernard's Hospital. EU citizens retain access to reciprocal health agreements under separate post-Brexit arrangements; check your GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) status. Travel insurance is recommended for all visitors.

Water Safety

Tap water in Gibraltar is safe to drink and of high quality. Gibraltar produces fresh water through desalination. No bottled water is necessary, though it is widely available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gibraltar eSIM, connectivity, and travel

Does EU Roam Like At Home apply in Gibraltar?

No. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and is not part of the EU or EEA. EU Roam Like At Home does not apply. UK domestic roaming also does not apply. Both EU and UK carriers charge international roaming rates in Gibraltar, making a Roamix Gibraltar eSIM the cost-effective alternative.

Which network operates in Gibraltar?

Gibtelecom is the only full-service mobile operator in Gibraltar, providing 4G and 5G coverage across the entire territory. GibFibre provides only fixed-line broadband and has no mobile network for visitors.

How do I set up a Roamix eSIM for Gibraltar?

Purchase a plan at roamix.app, scan the QR code in your phone eSIM settings (Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM), set Roamix as your data line and enable data roaming. Your eSIM will connect to Gibtelecom automatically on arrival in Gibraltar.

Is the internet open and unrestricted in Gibraltar?

Yes. Gibraltar has a completely open internet. All apps including WhatsApp, Google, FaceTime, Instagram and YouTube work freely without any restrictions.

Can I use my phone to cross between Gibraltar and Spain?

Yes, but your phone will automatically switch networks when you cross the frontier. In Gibraltar it uses Gibtelecom; in Spain it switches to Spanish carriers (Movistar, Orange, Vodafone Spain). A Roamix eSIM will roam between the two, but check whether your Roamix plan covers Spain as a separate destination.

How do I get from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar?

Malaga Airport (AGP) is approximately 130 kilometres from Gibraltar. Take a direct coach from Malaga Bus Station to La Linea de la Concepcion (approximately 2 hours), then walk across the frontier into Gibraltar. Alternatively rent a car or take a taxi from Malaga. Direct flights to Gibraltar (GIB) are available from London airports.

What currency does Gibraltar use?

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar pound (GIP), at par with British sterling (GBP). Both GIP and GBP circulate freely. Euros are accepted at most businesses but usually at a less favourable exchange rate than GBP.

What is the best time to visit Gibraltar?

September and October are ideal: warm, clear and less crowded than summer. Spring (April and May) is also excellent. July and August are busy and hot but still enjoyable. Winter (November to February) is mild and quiet.

How long does it take to see Gibraltar?

One full day is enough to see the main sights: the Upper Rock Nature Reserve (macaques, cave, tunnels), the cable car, Main Street and a walk to Europa Point. Two days allows for a day trip into La Linea, a hike on the Mediterranean Steps and a relaxed evening at Catalan Bay.

Do I need a visa to enter Gibraltar?

EU, EEA and UK nationals can enter Gibraltar freely with a valid passport or national ID card. US, Canadian and Australian nationals can enter visa-free for tourism. Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen Area. Check the Gibraltar Government website for your specific nationality.

Why does the road close at Gibraltar Airport?

Winston Churchill Avenue, Gibraltar's main road connecting the town to the Spanish frontier, crosses the airport's single runway at grade level. The road traffic lights turn red for every aircraft landing or taking off. This is unique in the world for an international airport. Allow extra time at the frontier if a flight is scheduled.

Are the Barbary macaques dangerous?

The macaques are wild animals and should be treated with caution. They will grab food, bags, sunglasses and phones from tourists. Do not feed them (it is illegal in Gibraltar), do not make direct eye contact and keep food in sealed bags. They are otherwise a remarkable wildlife encounter and are central to Gibraltar's identity.

What emergency numbers should I know in Gibraltar?

Emergency numbers in Gibraltar are 999 or 112 (general emergency), 199 (police), 190 (fire and ambulance). All can be dialled from any mobile network including a Roamix eSIM.

Is Gibraltar a good destination for day trips from Spain?

Yes. Gibraltar is one of the most popular day trips from the Costa del Sol and from Seville. It is easily reached by coach or car from La Linea. The frontier queue can be 20 to 40 minutes at peak times on summer weekends; go early in the morning.
