Andorra eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected in the Pyrenees Micro-State
Andorra runs on a single state operator, Andorra Telecom, with nationwide 4G LTE and expanding 5G in Andorra la Vella and the main parishes. Coverage is strong throughout the country because the territory is compact and mountainous terrain is served by dedicated infrastructure. A Roamix Andorra eSIM connects you the moment you cross the Spanish or French border, with no roaming fees and no SIM to hunt down in a tiny principality where most visitors come for a weekend. Budget 3 to 5 GB for a ski weekend or shopping trip, and make sure your phone works on European 4G LTE bands before you arrive.
Key Takeaways
- Andorra Telecom is the sole operator and delivers solid 4G LTE coverage across all seven parishes and major ski resorts.
- A Roamix eSIM activates automatically on entry via Spain or France, so you are online from the first toll road exit.
- Andorra has no airport. Plan your arrival through La Seu d'Urgell (12 km), Barcelona BCN (202 km), Toulouse TLS (196 km) or Perpignan PGF (128 km).
- Andorra is not an EU member and not in the Schengen Area, though entry requires a valid Schengen travel document. Duty-free shopping is a major draw.
- Ski passes, restaurant queues and parking at Grandvalira and Vallnord book out during peak winter weekends, so a connected phone is useful for real-time availability.
Quick Facts
Andorra Connectivity
Get a Roamix Andorra eSIM and arrive connected from La Seu d'Urgell or the French border.
How to Stay Connected in Andorra
Hotel and chalet wifi is generally reliable in Andorra la Vella and at the main ski resort bases. Free public wifi is available in some town centres, but coverage stops at the building door and mountain lifts have no wifi.
Option
Best For
Notes
RecommendedRoamix eSIM
Most visitors
Connects to Andorra Telecom on entry from Spain or France. No physical SIM, no kiosk queue, and no surprise roaming fees from a home carrier.
Local physical SIM from Andorra Telecom
Extended stays or workers
Andorra Telecom sells prepaid SIMs at its shops in Andorra la Vella. Requires a passport and a visit to a dedicated telecom store.
Roaming on a Spanish or French carrier
Very short day trips from Spain or France
Your Spanish or French operator may roam onto Andorra Telecom, but rates are typically high and data is throttled. Andorra is outside the EU roaming zone so standard EU Roam Like At Home rates do not apply.
Hotel and resort wifi
Light use at base
Fine for checking emails and maps at the end of the day, but unreliable on the mountain and useless in transit between parishes.
For most visitors to Andorra, a Roamix eSIM is the simplest and most cost-effective option. It activates on the border crossing with no setup needed in-country, and covers the compact principality with the same Andorra Telecom network that a local SIM would use.
Get connected the moment you land in Andorra.
Get your Andorra eSIMMobile Networks in Andorra
Andorra Telecom holds a legal monopoly on mobile telecoms in Andorra and operates the only network in the principality. That single-operator model means roaming agreements are universal and coverage is surprisingly consistent across a small but steep alpine territory. Roamix routes you onto the Andorra Telecom network the moment you cross from Spain or France, so there is nothing to buy in a country with a population smaller than a mid-size European suburb.
The only licensed mobile operator in Andorra. Provides nationwide 4G LTE coverage across all seven parishes and ski resort areas, with 5G live in the capital and Escaldes-Engordany. No alternative carrier exists within the principality.
Typical Speeds
4G LTE delivers 30 to 80 Mbps in towns and at ski resorts. 5G is live in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany with speeds up to 200 Mbps.
5G Status
5G is expanding from the capital outward across the more densely populated eastern parishes.
Because Andorra Telecom is the sole network, there is no benefit to seeking out a local SIM from a competing operator. A Roamix eSIM gives you the same network connection without needing to find a telecom store in a country with only one of them.
Coverage is strong across populated areas and ski resort zones. Deep ravines in the less-visited northwest around Ordino and the high-altitude backcountry above 2,500 metres can have reduced signal, but this affects very few visitor itineraries.
Andorra Telecom uses standard European LTE bands (B1, B3, B7, B20) and 5G in the n78 band, supported by most modern unlocked phones including iPhone XS onward and recent Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel models.
Data Usage Guide
Data needs in Andorra are modest because the country is small and most activities are concentrated around ski resorts and the capital shopping district. The main data-intensive tasks are navigation between parishes, live ski condition apps and video calls home.
Download the Grandvalira or Vallnord piste maps and offline terrain maps before heading to high-altitude lift stations where signal can be intermittent.

No restrictions. Useful for ski resort trail maps.
Social media
Instagram, X, TikTok and Facebook all work without restriction.
How to Set Up a Andorra eSIM
A Roamix Andorra eSIM is best installed at home over wifi before you drive up from Spain or France. It connects automatically to Andorra Telecom the moment you pass the border, so you arrive online without stopping at a shop.
Works on eSIM-capable phones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models. The phone must be carrier unlocked and support European LTE bands.
- 1
Buy your Andorra plan on the Roamix Andorra eSIM page before your trip.
- 2
Install the eSIM over wifi by scanning the QR code or using the direct activation link.
- 3
Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM as primary for calls and texts.
- 4
Enable data roaming for the Roamix line only.
- 5
Cross the Andorran border and the eSIM connects automatically to Andorra Telecom.
APN Note
Roamix configures the correct APN automatically. If data does not start after the border crossing, toggle airplane mode and restart.
Troubleshooting
If the network shows as registered but data does not flow, go to settings, confirm data roaming is on for the Roamix SIM, and manually select Andorra Telecom from available networks.
Get connected the moment you land in Andorra.
Get your Andorra eSIMArrival Checklist
Confirm your Roamix eSIM connects to Andorra Telecom as you cross the Spanish or French border post.
Have your passport or Schengen-valid ID accessible for the Andorra border check, which is a customs stop rather than a passport control.
Download offline maps for Andorra la Vella, Grandvalira and Vallnord before you leave the signal-rich Spanish motorway.
Exchange or carry some EUR cash for small shops and mountain refuges, though cards are accepted at most commercial establishments.
If skiing, book your lift pass on the Grandvalira or Vallnord app before arrival, as weekend queues at the pass offices can be long.
How locals communicate
Andorrans and the large resident Spanish and Portuguese communities use WhatsApp as the dominant messaging platform alongside standard SMS. French visitors tend to arrive with iMessage. All work normally.
Keep your home SIM active for SMS two-factor authentication and use the Roamix line for data and map navigation across the ski resorts.
Airports in Andorra
La Seu d'Urgell Airport
La Seu d'Urgell, Spain (12 km from Andorra border)
Small regional airport with basic wifi in the terminal. Spanish LTE (Movistar/Vodafone) is strong at the airport itself.
LEU handles limited scheduled and charter flights. Activate your Roamix Andorra eSIM before boarding at LEU so you connect to Andorra Telecom the moment you cross the border 12 km up the road.
Barcelona El Prat Airport
Barcelona, Spain (202 km from Andorra)
Free wifi across all terminals at BCN. Spanish 5G from Movistar and Vodafone is strong throughout the airport.
BCN is the most common arrival airport for international visitors heading to Andorra. Install your Roamix eSIM in the terminal and it will hand off from Spanish networks to Andorra Telecom automatically as your bus or car climbs the Pyrenean approach road.
Toulouse-Blagnac Airport
Toulouse, France (196 km from Andorra)
Free unlimited wifi across Toulouse-Blagnac terminal, with French Orange and SFR 4G strong throughout.
TLS is the main French gateway for Andorra. With Roamix data active, you can book a Flixbus or rental car from TLS to Andorra and navigate the N22 mountain road with maps loaded before you leave the terminal.
Perpignan-Rivesaltes Airport
Perpignan, France (128 km from Andorra)
Free wifi in the terminal. French LTE coverage is solid throughout the airport.
PGF is the closest French airport to Andorra. Activate your Roamix eSIM at PGF and the handoff to Andorra Telecom happens on the N20/N22 mountain approach through the Pyrenees.
Visa & Entry for Andorra
Andorra is not in the European Union or the Schengen Area but has open-border arrangements with both Spain and France. EU and EEA citizens can enter with a national ID card. Citizens of most other countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, can enter with a valid passport without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Note that entering Andorra counts as leaving the Schengen Area, so you must have sufficient remaining Schengen days to re-enter Spain or France when you leave.
eVisa / ETA
No eVisa or ETA is required for nationals of EU, Schengen, UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Check your specific nationality's requirements with the Andorran border administration before travelling.
Passport validity
Your passport or ID should be valid for the entire duration of your stay. EU nationals may use a national identity card.
Onward ticket
No formal onward ticket requirement, but your Schengen re-entry entitlement should be sufficient for the rest of your Europe trip.
Keep your Roamix eSIM active to access digital versions of travel insurance, accommodation bookings and border documentation at the customs check.
Entry rules can change. Confirm current requirements with the Andorran authorities at govern.ad before travel.

Get your Andorra eSIMMoney & Payments in Andorra
Andorra uses the euro without being an EU member. The country is famous for lower VAT on electronics, alcohol, tobacco and perfume, making in-person price comparison essential. A connected phone lets you cross-check prices against online listings on the spot.
Cash vs Card
Cards are widely accepted in hotels, ski resorts and the main shopping stores. Smaller mountain cafes and traditional markets in the parishes may be cash only, so carry a small amount of EUR.
ATMs
ATMs are available throughout Andorra la Vella and at the main ski resort villages. Use Visa or Mastercard ATMs inside bank branches to avoid independent ATM fees. Choose EUR to avoid dynamic currency conversion.
Payment Apps
Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted at most modern retail outlets in the capital and at ski resort facilities. Contactless Visa and Mastercard work everywhere that accepts cards.
Daily Budget
Budget travellers staying in hostels and ski lodges spend around 60 to 90 EUR per day. Mid-range skiers including lift passes, meals and accommodation spend 150 to 250 EUR per day.
Data cost: Carrier roaming from EU operators to Andorra can be expensive because the principality sits outside the EU roaming zone. A Roamix Andorra eSIM typically costs a small fraction of what EU operators charge for Andorra roaming days.
Getting Around Andorra
Andorra has no rail network and no domestic flights. The entire country is navigated by road, and most visitors use a rental car, a private transfer or the national bus service. The principality is small enough that every corner is reachable in under an hour from the capital.
Car and rental vehicle
The most flexible option for reaching ski resorts, hiking trailheads and the mountain parishes. Navigation apps work well in coverage areas. Download offline maps for the upper ski resort roads before you leave the capital.
National bus network (cooperatives.ad)
The Andorran national bus system connects all seven parishes from a central interchange in Andorra la Vella. Timetables are published online and a connected phone makes reading Spanish and Catalan schedules much easier.
Ski resort shuttles
Grandvalira and Vallnord both run free shuttle buses between accommodation and lift bases during the ski season. Check live schedules and ski-in ski-out route maps on the resort apps with Roamix data.
Walking and cycling
Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany are compact and walkable. A national cycling network links the parishes, and mountain bike trails fan out from Vallnord. Data is useful for live trail condition updates.
Regions & Travel
Andorra packs remarkable diversity into 468 square kilometres of Pyrenean terrain. Skiers, duty-free shoppers, spa visitors and summer hikers all find what they came for within a short drive of the capital. A Roamix eSIM keeps navigation, ski pass apps and restaurant bookings working as you move between the seven parishes.
Best time to visit: December to March for skiing at Grandvalira and Vallnord. July and August for hiking, mountain biking and cooler temperatures. June and September are ideal shoulder months for quieter visits.
Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany
The capital and its neighbouring parish form the commercial and cultural heart of the principality, with the duty-free shopping district of Meritxell Avenue, the Caldea spa complex, and a concentration of restaurants and hotels that forms the natural base for most visitors.
Signal: Best 5G coverage in the country. Andorra Telecom signal is strong throughout the urban centre, the shopping streets and the Caldea complex.
Grandvalira and the Eastern Parishes (Encamp, Canillo, Soldeu, El Tarter, Pas de la Casa)
Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, spanning four parishes and over 210 km of marked runs. The towns of Soldeu and El Tarter sit at the heart of the resort, while Pas de la Casa on the French border is the most snow-reliable village in Andorra.
Signal: Andorra Telecom 4G covers the resort base areas and most chairlift zones. Signal can be intermittent above 2,400 metres on exposed north-facing pistes.
Vallnord and the Western Parishes (La Massana, Pal, Arinsal)
Vallnord-Pal Arinsal is the quieter alternative ski and bike resort west of the capital, popular with families and freestyle skiers. La Massana is a market town with good local restaurants and direct gondola access to the Pal ski area.
Signal: Solid 4G coverage in La Massana town and at the Pal and Arinsal resort bases. Lifts above treeline can see patchy signal at the highest stations.
Ordino and Ordino-Arcalis
The most traditional and least commercial parish in Andorra, Ordino is known for its Baroque churches, artisan museums and the Ordino-Arcalis ski area, which has the highest and most snow-reliable terrain in the principality and attracts a loyal crowd of powder seekers.
Signal: Good 4G coverage in Ordino village. Ordino-Arcalis ski area has coverage at the base but the high-alpine north face above 2,400 metres can lose signal.
Sant Julia de Loria and the Southern Border
The southernmost parish acts as the gateway for visitors arriving from Spain via the Hispano-Andorran road. It has a quieter character than the capital, with traditional tobacco fields, the FEDA energy park and direct access to hiking routes along the lower Valira River valley.
Signal: Strong 4G coverage in Sant Julia town and along the main access road from La Seu d'Urgell. Signal is reliable along the river valley floor.
Hidden Gems
Ordino-Arcalis Ski Area
ski resortOrdino
Andorra's most remote and least crowded ski area, with north-facing terrain that holds powder longer than any other resort in the principality. Favoured by experts and off-piste guides who appreciate the uncrowded pistes and dramatic Pyrenean scenery.
Signal: Good 4G at the Arcalis base station. The upper lifts above 2,600 metres can drop to limited signal on north-facing aspects.
Avalanche bulletins and weather updates change fast in the Arcalis high terrain. Check the Consell Nivo avalanche report and download offline maps over Roamix data at the Ordino village base before heading up the access road.
Caldea Thermes Spa
spa complexEscaldes-Engordany
The largest spa complex in Southern Europe, built around natural thermal waters at 9,000 square metres of lagoons, bubble baths, saunas and treatments. The glass tower structure is a landmark of the Andorran skyline and draws visitors year-round as a non-skiing alternative.
Signal: Strong 5G signal in Escaldes-Engordany. Caldea's indoor thermal complex has guest wifi, but the Roamix eSIM keeps you connected for the walk from your hotel.
Caldea entry and treatment bookings sell out on peak winter weekends. Secure your session and download the booking confirmation over Roamix data before you travel, as walk-in slots are limited.
Coma Pedrosa Natural Park
National ParkLa Massana
Home to Andorra's highest peak at 2,942 metres, Coma Pedrosa is the country's main summer hiking destination. The multi-day GRP circuit around the massif passes glacial lakes, high-altitude meadows and granite ridges rarely seen by casual visitors.
Signal: Signal is good in Arinsal village at the trailhead. The summit approach above 2,200 metres drops to no signal, so download maps in the village.
Mountain weather in Andorra changes fast. Pull up the Meteoclimat Andorra forecast and download the GRP trail map over Roamix data in Arinsal before leaving the valley. Refuge bookings for the overnight section fill quickly in July and August.
Casa de la Vall
historic monumentAndorra la Vella
The medieval parliament house of Andorra, built in 1580 and used as the seat of the Consell General until 2011. The building is one of the smallest and oldest functioning parliament buildings in the world, now open as a museum with guided tours in multiple languages.
Signal: Central Andorra la Vella has excellent 5G signal and fast data throughout the old quarter.
Guided tours of Casa de la Vall run on fixed timed slots and book out during high season. Reserve your language-specific tour and pull up the museum entrance details over Roamix data before arriving in the old quarter.
Pas de la Casa
ski villageEncamp
Andorra's most snowsure village, sitting at 2,050 metres just 2 km from the French border at the Col d'Envalira. Pas de la Casa has a lively apres-ski scene, the lowest prices in the principality for duty-free goods and direct access to the eastern Grandvalira ski area.
Signal: Reliable 4G at resort level. The French border 2 km up the road switches to Orange France, so your eSIM may briefly hand between networks near the frontier.
Pas de la Casa is the busiest cross-border shopping stop in Andorra. With Roamix data you can compare fuel prices at the border stations and check which duty-free shops have stock before driving up from Spain or France.
Santuari de Meritxell
religious siteCanillo
The national sanctuary of Andorra and the shrine of Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of the principality. The modern building designed by Ricardo Bofill incorporates a restored Romanesque chapel and is a place of Andorran national identity, particularly around the September 8 national holiday.
Signal: Solid 4G coverage at the sanctuary and on the main road through Canillo parish. The chapel sits roadside with convenient parking.
The national holiday on September 8 draws the largest crowds of the Andorran calendar. Check road conditions and parking on the main road through Canillo over Roamix data, as traffic backs up to the capital on the feast day.
Vall d'Incles
mountain valleyCanillo
A secluded glacial valley above the Grandvalira ski resort, used as a summer hiking base and cross-country skiing terrain in winter. The traditional stone shepherds' huts (bordes) and gentle meadow paths contrast sharply with the commercial resort activity a few kilometres below.
Signal: Good 4G along the valley floor road from Soldeu. The upper valley above the forest line can see patchy signal.
Summer hiking in Vall d'Incles is off the main tourist circuit. Download the ComboSport trail map and mountain weather over Roamix data in Soldeu before entering the valley, as the path to the upper lakes is unmarked on standard maps.
Engolasters Lake
lakeEscaldes-Engordany
A glacial lake at 1,616 metres just 10 minutes by car from the capital, with a circular walking trail through pine forest, a Romanesque bell tower at the water's edge and views down to the urban valley. A popular escape for families and day visitors who want mountain scenery without a long drive.
Signal: Andorra Telecom 4G covers the lake plateau and the access road from Escaldes. Signal is reliable for the short walking circuit.
Engolasters is an easy first-day destination to orientate yourself to Andorra's mountain terrain. Download the circular trail route and the Sant Miquel de Engolasters church visiting hours over Roamix data before you drive up from the capital.
Roc del Quer Viewpoint
viewpointOrdino
Perched at 1,975 metres on a steel and glass bridge extending over a sheer cliff above Canillo, Roc del Quer is Andorra's most dramatic natural viewpoint. The vertiginous walkway offers unobstructed views across the entire central Andorran valley and is a short 45-minute hike from the car park.
Signal: Andorra Telecom 4G is reliable at Roc del Quer, which sits above the main Andorra la Vella to Ordino road. Signal drops in the forest section of the approach path.
The access car park fills by mid-morning on summer weekends. Check trail conditions and live weather over Roamix data before setting off, and download offline maps for the forest section where signal gaps occur.
Meritxell Avenue Duty-Free District
shopping districtAndorra la Vella
Andorra's legendary duty-free shopping strip, stretching from the Ronda del Pessebres down to the Baixada del Moli. Lower VAT rates than Spain and France make electronics, alcohol, tobacco and perfumes significantly cheaper here, drawing day-trippers from across the Pyrenean region.
Signal: Excellent 5G signal throughout the shopping boulevard and surrounding streets of central Andorra la Vella.
Price comparison between shops and against online prices is faster with Roamix data active. Check import allowances for your home country and compare electronic prices before committing, as stock and pricing change between individual stores.

Network note
Reliable 4G at resort base. Lift queues and family activity zones can see crowded conditions that slow data.
Roamix tip
Pre-register children for free lift passes and racing entry over Roamix data before the event day, as on-site registration queues can be long on World Snow Day.
Andorra Bike Race
sportMultiple parishes · May

Summer
June to August brings warm dry weather with daytime temperatures of 20 to 28C in the capital and cooler conditions above 2,000 metres. This is the best season for hiking, mountain biking and visiting Coma Pedrosa. Crowds are lighter than ski season and accommodation is more affordable.
Fall
September and October are excellent shoulder months with golden larch forests in the higher parishes, the national day celebrations on September 8 and the La Massana livestock fair in October. Temperatures cool from mid-October and the first autumn snow can arrive on the high peaks.
Winter
December to March is peak season driven by skiing at Grandvalira and Vallnord. Accommodation prices are at their highest, particularly over Christmas, New Year and school half-terms. Snowfall is generally reliable above 1,800 metres from late November. Pas de la Casa and Ordino-Arcalis hold snow longest.
Remote Work from Andorra
Andorra is a reasonable short-stay remote work destination in summer and shoulder season, with fast internet in Andorra la Vella, low taxes, and an appealing mountain environment. It is less practical in peak ski season when accommodation prices spike and connectivity at resort accommodation can be shared.
5G in the capital delivers speeds of up to 200 Mbps and handles video calls and tethering comfortably. A Roamix plan with 15 GB or more suits a working week of calls and uploads alongside skiing or hiking.
Use hotel and co-working wifi as the primary connection for large uploads and use your Roamix eSIM as a secure backup when moving between parishes or at resort-area cafes.

Language
Catalan is the official language of Andorra and is used in official signs and government communications. Spanish is the dominant everyday language of residents. French is widely understood, especially in the east near the French border. English is spoken at most tourist-facing businesses and ski resorts.
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving 5 to 10 percent in restaurants is customary. Bar service rarely expects tips. Ski instructors are sometimes tipped at the end of a course.
Food & Dining
Andorran cuisine is hearty mountain food rooted in Catalan and French traditions. Look for escudella (meat and vegetable stew), trinxat (potato and cabbage cake), and carn d'olla (slow-cooked meats) in traditional restaurants. The ski resort areas also have a strong French-influenced alpine restaurant scene with raclette and fondue.
Transport
The national bus network links all parishes from Andorra la Vella for around 3 EUR per trip. Download the cooperatives.ad timetable app before your visit. Taxis exist but are expensive and not metered in the same way as Spain or France.

Safety & Health in Andorra
Andorra is one of the safest countries in Europe with very low crime rates. The main risks for visitors are alpine in nature: avalanches on off-piste terrain, mountain weather changes and altitude-related fatigue on summer hikes. The principality has a small but well-equipped hospital in Andorra la Vella.
Keep your Roamix eSIM active on the mountain for emergencies. The single emergency number 112 works across Andorra Telecom. In high-altitude backcountry above 2,500 metres, signal can be intermittent, so download avalanche bulletin updates from the Consell Nivo app before leaving resort areas.
Health Note
Andorra has a modern hospital (Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell) in Andorra la Vella. EU nationals with a European Health Insurance Card receive reciprocal public healthcare. All other visitors should carry comprehensive travel health insurance with mountain rescue coverage.
Water Safety
Tap water is safe to drink throughout Andorra. Mountain streams and fountains in villages are generally clean but should be treated before drinking if you are high-altitude hiking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Andorra eSIM, connectivity, and travel
What is the best eSIM for Andorra?
Roamix is an excellent choice for Andorra because it connects to Andorra Telecom, the sole operator in the principality, the moment you cross the Spanish or French border. You land or arrive connected with no need to find a telecom store in a country with very limited retail options.
Do I need a SIM card for Andorra?
