How to Check If Your Phone Is Carrier Unlocked

Your phone must be carrier unlocked before you can install any eSIM, including Roamix. A locked phone is restricted to its original carrier's network, which blocks third-party eSIM profiles from being downloaded. Checking takes less than a minute — here's how to do it on every major device.

Why Your Phone Must Be Carrier Unlocked

When you buy a phone through a carrier (especially on a subsidized plan or contract), the carrier often locks it to their network to prevent you from switching before the contract is up. This lock applies to both physical SIM cards and eSIM profiles.

An unlocked phone has no such restriction — it can accept plans from any compatible carrier worldwide, which is exactly what you need for a Roamix travel eSIM.

How to Check on iPhone

Method A: Settings

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap About
  4. Scroll down to Carrier Lock

If the field reads "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked and ready for Roamix. If it shows your carrier's name (e.g., "AT&T" or "T-Mobile"), the phone is still locked.

Method B: Dial *#06#

Dial *#06# on your iPhone. A screen will appear showing your IMEI numbers and, if your device supports eSIM, an EID barcode. Check the Carrier Lock line on this screen. "No SIM restrictions" confirms you're unlocked.

This method also confirms eSIM support — if an EID appears, your iPhone has eSIM hardware.

How to Check on Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings
  2. In the search bar, type "IMEI"
  3. Tap IMEI information

If your Samsung is eSIM-capable, you'll see an EID listed alongside the IMEI numbers. To check carrier lock status specifically, you can also:

  • Insert a non-carrier SIM (a friend's SIM from a different carrier) and see if it registers — if it does, you're unlocked
  • Contact Samsung support with your IMEI and they can confirm lock status

Alternatively, dial *#06# and look for the EID field. Some Samsung models display carrier lock status on this screen.

How to Check on Other Android Devices

  1. Go to Settings → Network & Internet
  2. Look at the SIM section — if you see a "+" button or an "Add SIM" option, your device likely supports eSIM
  3. To test carrier unlock, insert a different carrier's SIM card and attempt to make a call or connect to data

You can also dial *#06# on most Android devices to see IMEI and, on eSIM-capable devices, an EID number.

Checking via IMEI lookup

If you're unsure, enter your IMEI at a reputable IMEI checker website (search "IMEI carrier check" for current options). These services can confirm both eSIM support and lock status for a small fee.

What to Do if Your Phone Is Locked

  1. Contact your home carrier — call customer service or use their online unlock request portal
  2. Check your contract status — carriers typically unlock phones once the contract period is complete or the device is paid off
  3. Pay any remaining balance — if you're on a device payment plan, paying it off usually triggers automatic unlock eligibility
  4. Allow processing time — unlocks can take 24–72 hours after approval, so request it a few days before your trip

Most carriers unlock phones for free once eligibility requirements are met. If your carrier charges an unlock fee, weigh it against the roaming savings you'll get from using Roamix on your trip.

Once you receive confirmation that your phone is unlocked (you may need to restart your device or re-insert your SIM after unlocking), you're ready to install a Roamix eSIM.
