Paraguay eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected from Asuncion to the Jesuit Missions

TL;DR

Paraguay is South America's most overlooked destination, a landlocked country of enormous waterfalls, Jesuit mission ruins, vast cattle ranches and the world's largest wetland in the Pantanal. Tigo is the dominant carrier with the best 4G LTE coverage nationwide. 5G is in early stages in select Asuncion areas only, with 4G LTE the effective standard across the country. A Roamix Paraguay eSIM activates at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport and keeps you connected through Asuncion, the Jesuit Circuits and the Iguazu Falls border region at Ciudad del Este. Budget 4 to 6 GB for two weeks. The Chaco wilderness and remote Pantanal areas have no mobile signal.

Key Takeaways

  • Tigo is Paraguay's leading carrier with the widest 4G LTE coverage; 5G is available only in limited Asuncion areas.
  • A Roamix eSIM activates at Asuncion Airport and avoids expensive carrier roaming in this affordable destination.
  • Paraguay has a southern hemisphere calendar: summer is December to March, winter is June to September.
  • The Chaco region and remote Pantanal areas have no mobile coverage; offline maps are essential.
  • Guarani is widely spoken alongside Spanish; the country is genuinely off the tourist circuit and reward curious travellers.

Mobile Networks in Paraguay

Paraguay has three main carriers: Tigo (Millicom, the market leader with the best 4G LTE coverage), Personal (Telecom Argentina, second carrier) and Claro (third, weakest rural reach). Tigo leads on both coverage and data speeds across the country. 5G is in very early stages with only limited Tigo deployment in select Asuncion districts; 4G LTE is the effective national standard. A Roamix Paraguay eSIM connects to the strongest available network automatically on arrival at Asuncion, delivering reliable city and highway data without roaming bills.

TigoBest Coverage

Market leader with the widest 4G LTE footprint across Asuncion, Ciudad del Este, Encarnacion and the main highway corridors, as well as the strongest reach into rural Paraguay.

PersonalSecondary

Second carrier with solid 4G LTE in Asuncion and main provincial capitals. Coverage drops faster than Tigo in rural and Chaco routes.

ClaroRegional

Third carrier with more limited rural coverage. Best used as a backup in Asuncion where all three carriers overlap.

Typical Speeds

Asuncion 4G LTE delivers 15 to 50 Mbps. Provincial towns and main highways deliver 5 to 20 Mbps on Tigo's network.

5G Status

Tigo has launched initial 5G in a few Asuncion districts only. Nationwide, 4G LTE is the practical standard for the foreseeable future.

Tigo gives the most consistent experience across Asuncion and the Jesuit Circuits in the south. For the Trans-Chaco Highway drive, coverage exists in Filadelfia and Loma Plata but disappears on long stretches. Download everything in Asuncion before heading west.

Paraguay's Gran Chaco, which covers the entire western half of the country, has extremely limited to no mobile coverage beyond the Trans-Chaco Highway and a few towns. The Pantanal wetlands in the northwest, remote cattle estancias and national parks away from main roads can have no signal on any carrier.

Paraguayan networks use standard LTE Band 4 and Band 28. Any recent unlocked phone from iPhone XS onward or equivalent Android supports Roamix eSIM on Paraguayan networks.

Data Usage Guide

Data needs in Paraguay are moderate. Asuncion city use is straightforward, but the country's remote natural attractions, including the Chaco, the Pantanal and the Jesuit ruins in their rural settings, require offline preparation before leaving city coverage.

Download offline Google Maps for the Trans-Chaco Highway, the Jesuit Circuit roads and any Pantanal river routes before leaving Asuncion or Encarnacion.

How to Set Up a Paraguay eSIM

A Roamix Paraguay eSIM is best installed over wifi before departure. It activates automatically when you connect to Tigo or Personal at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, so you land already online.

Works on eSIM-capable phones including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models. The phone must be carrier unlocked.

  1. 1

Buy your plan on the Roamix Paraguay eSIM page before departure.

  2. 2

Scan the QR code or tap to install the eSIM over wifi.

  3. 3

Label it Roamix and keep your home SIM as primary for calls and texts.

  4. 4

Enable data roaming for the Roamix line only.

  5. 5

Land in Paraguay and the eSIM connects automatically to Tigo or Personal.

APN Note

Roamix sets the correct APN automatically on most devices. If data does not start, apply the APN from your activation email and toggle airplane mode.

Troubleshooting

No data on arrival usually means data roaming is off for the Roamix line. Check settings, select the network manually and restart.

Arrival Checklist

1

Confirm your Roamix eSIM has connected to Tigo before leaving Silvio Pettirossi Airport arrivals.

2

Download offline Google Maps for Asuncion and your first destination before leaving the airport wifi zone.

3

Check visa requirements; most South American nationals enter freely, while most other nationalities need to check entry rules.

4

Withdraw some PYG from an airport ATM; while cards work in Asuncion hotels, cash is useful in smaller towns and markets.

5

Note emergency number 911 and save your accommodation address offline for the taxi from the airport.

How locals communicate

WhatsApp is the dominant communication platform in Paraguay and is used universally for messaging, calls and business contacts. SMS is used mainly for OTP codes.

Keep your home SIM active for SMS two-factor authentication while using the Roamix line for data. WhatsApp calls over Roamix data are reliable in Asuncion and provincial cities.

Visa & Entry for Paraguay

Paraguay is relatively open to tourism. Most South American nationals from MERCOSUR countries can enter with just a national identity card. Citizens of the USA, Canada, EU countries, UK, Australia and Japan can enter without a visa for stays up to 90 days. Citizens of other countries may need a visa in advance.

Money & Payments in Paraguay

Paraguay uses the Guarani (PYG), one of the least-valued currencies in the world, so expect large numbers for small amounts. Cards are accepted in Asuncion hotels and malls. Cash is useful in markets, smaller restaurants and all travel outside the capital.

Cash vs Card

Cards work in Asuncion shopping malls, upscale hotels and chain restaurants. In provincial towns, at the Jesuit missions and throughout the Chaco, cash is the primary payment method.

ATMs

ATMs are widely available in Asuncion and main provincial cities. Use Vision Banco, Continental and BBPS machines for reliable access. In the Chaco beyond Filadelfia and in rural areas, ATMs do not exist; withdraw enough cash in Asuncion.

Payment Apps

Paraguayan payment apps including Billetera Personal and Tigo Money are widely used locally for peer-to-peer transfers. International Apple Pay and Google Pay have very limited acceptance.

Daily Budget

Paraguay is one of South America's most affordable countries. Budget travellers can manage on 100,000 to 200,000 PYG (15 to 30 USD) per day; mid-range travel runs 200,000 to 400,000 PYG (30 to 60 USD) per day.

Data cost: Carrier roaming in Paraguay from most home providers is expensive relative to the country's very low costs. A Roamix plan is a far better value.

Getting Around Paraguay

Paraguay's road network connects the main cities efficiently, but public transport between tourist sites is limited. Rental cars are the best option for the Jesuit Circuit and Chaco. Asuncion has buses and taxis but no metro.

Rental car

The most practical way to explore the Jesuit Circuit, the Trans-Chaco Highway and the northern riverine regions. Use live navigation in Asuncion and cache offline maps before every inter-city route.

Taxis and rideshare

Standard taxis operate in Asuncion. Uber and InDrive have limited presence; PedidosYa is the most used local app. Agree fares with taxis before entering and use your eSIM to look up approximate rates.

Long-distance buses

Bus services connect Asuncion to Ciudad del Este, Encarnacion, Concepcion and Filadelfia. Companies like Sol del Paraguay, Rysa and Nasa Golondrina serve main routes. Use your eSIM to check schedules from the Asuncion bus terminal.

Domestic flights

Limited domestic services operate from Silvio Pettirossi to Ciudad del Este and Encarnacion. Use your eSIM to check Amaszonas Paraguay schedules and manage bookings.

Regions & Travel

Paraguay rewards patient travellers who seek experiences rather than infrastructure. South America's most Guarani-influenced country offers Jesuit mission ruins, waterfront capital city life, Mennonite colony culture in the Chaco and the raw wildness of the Pantanal. A Roamix eSIM keeps navigation and bookings working across the main circuits.

Best time to visit: April to September (southern hemisphere autumn and winter) offers the most comfortable conditions for travel, with mild temperatures and lower humidity. Summer (December to March) is hot and wet, with the Gran Chaco reaching extreme temperatures above 45C.

Local Tips for Paraguay

Language

Paraguay is the only truly bilingual country in the Americas. Spanish and Guarani are co-official languages, and most Paraguayans switch freely between them, often mixing both in Jopara. English is spoken mainly in upscale Asuncion hotels and by young professionals. Learning a few words of Guarani like 'Mba'eichapa' (how are you) earns genuine appreciation.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. Rounding up restaurant bills or leaving 5 to 10 percent is standard for good service. For tour guides, 50,000 to 100,000 PYG per day is appropriate.

Food & Dining

Paraguayan food is hearty and meat-centric. Try sopa paraguaya (a dense corn bread with cheese), chipa (cheese bread from Guarani tradition), bori-bori (corn ball soup), mbejhu (cheese flatbread) and asado (grilled beef) from cattle ranches. Tereré, iced herb drink with yerba mate, is the national drink consumed throughout the day.

Transport

Asuncion taxis are affordable but unlicensed taxis at the airport can overcharge. Use hotel-arranged transfers or negotiate the fare in advance. In Ciudad del Este, use only licensed taxis near the main market area.

wildlife

iNaturalist

Ideal for the Chaco and Pantanal, where rare wildlife including jaguars, giant anteaters and pampas deer can be identified and logged while offline.

Safety & Health in Paraguay

Paraguay is generally safe for tourists who exercise normal precautions. Asuncion's historic centre and Vila Morra districts are manageable. Pickpocketing around Mercado Cuatro and bus station areas requires attention. Ciudad del Este's market area is busy and valuables should be kept close. Rural Paraguay is very safe.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active in Asuncion for navigation and emergency calls. In the Chaco and Pantanal, download all maps, emergency contacts and estancia booking details before leaving the city. Inform accommodation of your planned route in the Chaco.

Health Note

Dengue fever is present and mosquito repellent is essential, particularly in summer and near standing water. Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for travel to Concepcion and the northern Pantanal. Comprehensive travel health insurance is strongly advised.

Water Safety

Tap water quality varies across Paraguay. Bottled water is recommended throughout the country. In Asuncion upscale hotels tap water is generally acceptable, but bottled water is safer everywhere else.
