Guam eSIM and Travel Guide: Stay Connected on America's Pacific Island

TL;DR

Guam is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Islands chain, an unincorporated US territory and one of the most strategically significant American military bases in the Pacific. For visitors it is a tropical beach destination with American standards and infrastructure: English everywhere, US dollars, US plug sockets and fast mobile data. DoCoMo Pacific (a subsidiary of NTT DoCoMo Japan) was the first operator to launch 5G in Guam and is the primary network. IT&E is the largest locally-owned carrier with strong south island coverage. A Roamix Guam eSIM activates before you fly and connects at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, served by flights from Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Australia and Honolulu.

Key Takeaways

  • DoCoMo Pacific launched Guam's first 5G and is the technology leader. IT&E has the widest overall coverage including the southern villages and naval base areas. GTA TeleGuam is the local alternative.
  • A Roamix eSIM activates before departure and connects to the best available Guam network on landing at Won Pat International Airport, used by millions of Japanese, Korean and Australian tourists annually.
  • Guam uses US standards throughout: US dollars, Type A and B 120V power sockets, US food labelling and US emergency number 911. No currency exchange needed for US visitors.
  • Tumon Bay is the tourist epicentre: a crescent of beach lined with Japanese-catering resort hotels, duty-free shopping malls and restaurants. The island extends south to quieter villages, jungle waterfalls and WWII history sites.
  • Guam is a key layover and transit hub for Japan-Australia and Japan-US routes. Even a 24 to 48-hour transit is enough to explore Tumon Bay and Two Lovers Point.

How to Stay Connected in Guam

Resort Wi-Fi in Tumon Bay is generally fast and reliable, particularly in upmarket Japanese-catering properties like the Guam Marriott, Westin and Hilton. Smaller guesthouses in Hagatna and the south villages have slower connections. DoCoMo Pacific 5G in Tumon Bay is often faster than resort Wi-Fi in practice.

RecommendedRoamix eSIM

All visitors to Guam arriving from Asia, Australia, Europe or anywhere outside the US mainland

Activates before departure, connects to DoCoMo Pacific 5G or IT&E 4G on landing. No SIM purchasing, no US number complexity. Best choice for international visitors.

IT&E or DoCoMo Pacific local SIM

Long-stay visitors or those wanting the lowest possible local data rates

Available at IT&E or DoCoMo Pacific retail stores in Tumon Bay and the Micronesia Mall in Dededo. Requires passport. US-standard SIM registration process.

US carrier roaming (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon)

US domestic plan holders checking whether Guam is included

Some US domestic plans include Guam as part of their nationwide coverage. T-Mobile US domestic plans typically include Guam. Verify with your US carrier before travel: if included, this may be the most convenient option for US-based travellers.

Resort Wi-Fi

Evening use in your Tumon Bay hotel room

Fast and reliable at upmarket Tumon Bay resorts. Adequate for messaging, video calls and streaming. Not suitable as primary connectivity when exploring outside the resort.

Mobile Networks in Guam

Guam has three mobile operators: DoCoMo Pacific (a subsidiary of Japan's NTT DoCoMo, operating 4G and Guam's first 5G network), IT&E (the largest locally-owned carrier with comprehensive islandwide 4G coverage including southern villages and military areas) and GTA TeleGuam (the legacy local carrier, now owned by a consortium, offering solid 4G). DoCoMo Pacific leads on technology and speed in the tourist Tumon Bay corridor and central Guam. IT&E has the most comprehensive geographic coverage, particularly in southern Guam villages, Inarajan and Umatac Bay. A Roamix Guam eSIM connects to the best available network for the most reliable combined experience.

DoCoMo PacificBest Coverage

First to launch 5G in Guam. Strongest 5G and 4G performance in Tumon Bay, Tamuning, Hagatna and the tourist north. Backed by NTT DoCoMo Japan technology. The premium choice for speed in the main tourist area.

IT&ESecondary

Largest locally-owned carrier in Guam. Strong 4G coverage extending into the south of the island including Inarajan, Umatac, Merizo and the areas around Naval Base Guam. Good choice for travellers exploring beyond Tumon Bay.

GTA TeleGuamRegional

Legacy local carrier with solid 4G covering central and northern Guam. Good reliability in Dededo and Yigo. Slightly weaker in the far south compared to IT&E.

Typical Speeds

DoCoMo Pacific 5G in Tumon Bay delivers 150 to 600 Mbps. IT&E 4G in central and southern Guam delivers 30 to 100 Mbps. GTA TeleGuam 4G delivers 20 to 80 Mbps.

5G Status

5G is live via DoCoMo Pacific across Tumon Bay, Tamuning and central Hagatna. Expanding south toward Dededo and Barrigada.

DoCoMo Pacific 5G speeds in Tumon Bay are genuinely fast. If you are uploading large video files for social media or streaming to your home, activate your Roamix eSIM before landing and you will have production-quality connectivity from the hotel. Japanese-market tourists in Guam often bring Japanese DoCoMo SIMs that roam natively; everyone else benefits from a Roamix eSIM.

The interior jungle of the central plateau and some southern coastal areas around Umatac Bay and Cetti Bay overlook areas can have weaker 4G signal. The Guam National Wildlife Refuge in the north tip and the Ritidian Beach area have limited coverage. Most tourist areas, hotels, dive sites and beaches have strong 4G or 5G.

Guam uses US-compatible LTE bands and 5G NR bands (Bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 66). All US-market iPhones work natively. Most international unlocked iPhones (XS and newer) and recent Android devices support the relevant bands. Guam uses 120V power with Type A and B (US-standard) sockets.

Data Usage Guide

Guam's 5G and 4G networks are fast enough for any data-intensive activity. The main preparation task is downloading offline content for areas with limited coverage: the Guam National Wildlife Refuge at Ritidian, deep jungle trails and ferry crossings to Cocos Island.

Download the National Park Service app and all War in the Pacific site offline maps in Tumon Bay before heading to central and south Guam sites. Talofofo Falls trail has 4G but caching the map is good practice.

Arrival Checklist

1

Activate your Roamix Guam eSIM before departure so it connects to DoCoMo Pacific 5G or IT&E 4G on landing at Won Pat International Airport.

2

Download offline Google Maps tiles for Guam, including Tumon Bay, the south island, Talofofo and Ritidian Point.

3

Note the US emergency number: 911 for all emergencies in Guam.

4

Check US entry requirements: Guam has its own separate entry system (the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program) that differs from the US mainland Visa Waiver Program (ESTA). Many countries eligible for Guam's own waiver are not on the US ESTA list and vice versa.

5

Bring a US-standard Type A or B plug adapter if arriving from Asia, Europe or Australia. Guam uses 120V, which may not charge some dual-voltage devices at full speed.

How locals communicate

Chamorros and the broader Guam community use standard American messaging apps: iMessage, FaceTime, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Filipino-American residents (the largest community) heavily use Facebook and WhatsApp. Japanese tourists frequently use LINE. The tourist industry communicates primarily in English and Japanese.

Guam is a US territory: if you have a US phone plan that includes Puerto Rico and US territories, it may work in Guam. Check your carrier's specific territory coverage list. If not covered, a Roamix eSIM is the solution.

Airports in Guam

GUM

ROP

Rota International Airport

Rota, CNMI

Small regional airport serving the island of Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands. Basic facilities with no reliable public Wi-Fi.

Rota is the nearest island to Guam in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a short flight north. United Airlines and local charters connect GUM to ROP. Note: CNMI uses the same calling code (+1-670) but is a separate US territory from Guam.

SPN

Saipan International Airport

Saipan, CNMI

Larger regional airport in the CNMI with free Wi-Fi. Served by multiple Asian carriers.

Saipan is the main island of the CNMI and is commonly paired with Guam on Japan-originating travel itineraries. A Roamix eSIM plan may or may not include CNMI; check your plan's coverage at roamix.app before travelling north.

Visa & Entry for Guam

Guam operates a separate Visa Waiver Program (the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, GCWVP) distinct from the US mainland ESTA. Nationals of Japan, South Korea, Australia, the UK, most EU countries, Canada, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many others may enter Guam visa-free under GCWVP for up to 45 days. Some countries eligible for Guam entry are NOT eligible for ESTA. Entry to Guam does not confer the right to travel to the US mainland.

Visa on arrivalAvailable

eVisa / ETA

Under the GCWVP, eligible nationals do not need to apply in advance. Bring a completed I-736 form (Guam-CNMI Visitor Permit), available on the flight. Check the US CBP website for the current list of GCWVP eligible countries.

Passport validity

Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay is required.

Onward ticket

Onward or return ticket is required. Immigration officers at Won Pat Airport do verify this.

Download your hotel booking confirmation and return flight details offline before landing. Won Pat Airport immigration can be slow for large aircraft arrivals; working data for messaging your hotel while waiting is useful.

Guam entry requirements differ from US mainland requirements. Verify current GCWVP eligibility at the US Customs and Border Protection website (cbp.gov) before travel.

Money & Payments in Guam

Guam uses the US dollar (USD). No currency exchange is needed for US visitors. For international visitors the USD is the currency to bring or exchange before arrival. Major currencies (JPY, KRW, AUD) can be exchanged at the airport and at major hotels in Tumon Bay.

Cash vs Card

Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted everywhere in Tumon Bay: hotels, restaurants, duty-free shops and dive operators. Cash is useful for local restaurants in Hagatna, the Yigo and Inarajan village markets and small roadside food trucks. Contactless and Apple Pay are increasingly accepted at larger venues.

ATMs

Bank of Guam, First Bank of Guam and Bank of Hawaii ATMs are available throughout Tumon Bay and in major shopping centres. Airport ATMs charge fees; better rates at bank branch ATMs in Tumon Bay or Hagatna. Japanese yen and Korean won can be exchanged at DFS T Galleria and major hotel front desks.

Payment Apps

Apple Pay and Google Pay work at major retailers and hotels throughout Tumon Bay. Zelle and Venmo are used by American community members but not relevant for tourist transactions. DFS Galleria has its own shopping reward app for Japanese-market visitors.

Daily Budget

Guam has American pricing. Budget travellers at guesthouses and local plate lunch restaurants spend USD 80 to 120 per day. Mid-range visitors at Tumon Bay hotels with resort dining spend USD 200 to 350 per day. Luxury Westin, Marriott and Pacific Star Resort runs USD 300 to 600 per night. Duty-free shopping and dive trips are additional significant costs.

Data cost: Local data plans from IT&E and DoCoMo Pacific are US-priced (moderate to expensive by Pacific island standards). A Roamix eSIM offers convenient pre-purchase at competitive rates without needing to visit a carrier store.

Getting Around Guam

Guam has a car-centric infrastructure in the American style. A rental car is the most practical way to explore beyond Tumon Bay, particularly for the south island villages, Talofofo Falls, Ritidian Beach and WWII sites. The tourist Tumon Bay strip is walkable. Taxis are available at the airport and hotels. There is no public bus system practical for tourists.

Rental car

Essential for south Guam, Talofofo, Ritidian and WWII site exploration. Most major rental agencies have counters at Won Pat Airport. US driving licence accepted. Google Maps navigation works throughout Guam with offline map downloaded.

Taxi and iRide Guam

Taxis are available from the airport (taxi stand outside arrivals) and from major hotels. The iRide Guam app provides local rideshare service. Roamix data enables app booking from the terminal.

Hotel shuttle bus

Most Tumon Bay resort hotels run complimentary shuttles to the airport and to DFS T Galleria duty-free shopping. Limited to the Tumon Bay corridor. Check schedules with your hotel on arrival using Roamix data.

Island Hop Guam ferries

Ferries run from Merizo Pier to Cocos Island (a small uninhabited coral atoll off the south coast with a beach park). No signal on the crossing. Download Cocos Island map offline before boarding in Merizo.

Regions & Travel

Guam offers a compact but diverse travel experience: the resort-heavy Tumon Bay in the north, the historic and charming capital Hagatna, WWII battlefield sites throughout the island, pristine coral reefs for diving and snorkelling, southern coastal villages little changed in decades, and the sacred Chamorro cultural heritage of the island's indigenous people. The entire island is 50 kilometres long; you can drive from the northernmost tip to the southernmost point in under two hours.

Best time to visit: December to June is the dry season, with July to December being the rainy season and the period of tropical storm risk. January to April is the most popular and comfortable period: low humidity, consistent sunshine and the peak of Japanese and Korean resort tourism. The Christmas to New Year period is very busy. Typhoon risk is real from August to December; check JTWC (Joint Typhoon Warning Center) forecasts when planning travel in this window.

Tumon Bay and the Tourist Corridor

The heartbeat of Guam tourism. Tumon Bay is a crescent-shaped beach framed by luxury resort hotels, duty-free shopping malls (DFS T Galleria, Guam Premium Outlets), Japanese restaurants, dive shops and the famous Two Lovers Point cliff overlook to the north. The beach is calm, shallow and ideal for families. Most visitors to Guam stay within this corridor.

Signal: Best DoCoMo Pacific 5G in all of Guam. Ultra-fast speeds throughout Tumon Bay, the hotel strip and Two Lovers Point.

Spring

April to June is a pleasant shoulder period: dry season extending into May, with June bringing the first humidity of the new rainy season. Good value accommodation. The Micronesia Island Fair in May is a highlight. Dive visibility is excellent in April and May with the clearest water of the year.

Summer

July to September is the heart of Guam's rainy season and typhoon risk period. Humidity is at its highest and afternoon tropical downpours are daily. The Japanese school summer holiday (July to August) coincides, making Tumon Bay very busy with Japanese family tourists despite the weather. July 21 Liberation Day is the biggest holiday. Typhoon risk is real; monitor JTWC forecasts.

Fall

October to November sees the rainy season tapering. Humidity begins to drop by November. Typhoon risk recedes after October. Hotels offer better rates as Japanese school holiday season has ended. The Guam BBQ Block Party in September and food festivals in November provide cultural engagement.

Winter

December to March is dry season and peak tourism. Humidity drops, temperatures are 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, and the island is at its most comfortable. December and January are the busiest months with Japanese and Korean New Year travellers. The Guam Marathon in March and MagellanFest also draw visitors. Book well in advance for this period.

Remote Work from Guam

Guam is a viable remote work destination thanks to US standards, English language, fast DoCoMo Pacific 5G in Tumon Bay and comfortable resort infrastructure. The ChST timezone (UTC+10) aligns well with East Asian business hours and reasonably with Australian time zones.

DoCoMo Pacific 5G in Tumon Bay delivers speeds far exceeding what most professional remote workers need. Tumon Bay hotel business centres and some cafes offer co-working-style environments.

The Guam digital nomad scene is small but growing. The Hilton and Marriott in Tumon Bay have business centres with fast Wi-Fi and printer access. The Tumon Bay resort strip cafes and the Chamorro Village area offer informal work-from-cafe options. For calls to Asia, the UTC+10 timezone lines up exactly with Japan, Philippines and Australia Eastern time during standard hours.

Local Tips for Guam

Language

English is the official language and lingua franca of all commerce, government and tourism in Guam. Chamorro, the indigenous language of the Chamorro people, is co-official and taught in schools. Japanese is widely spoken in Tumon Bay due to the dominant Japanese tourist market. Filipino languages (Tagalog, Ilocano) are spoken by the large Filipino-American community.

Tipping

Guam follows US tipping norms. Restaurant service: 15 to 20 percent. Taxi drivers: 10 to 15 percent round-up. Hotel housekeeping: USD 2 to 5 per day. Dive guides: USD 10 to 20 per dive or day trip. Duty-free shopping staff do not expect tips.

Food & Dining

Chamorro cuisine is distinctive and deeply local: kelaguen (marinated raw or grilled chicken or beef with lemon, coconut and hot peppers), red rice (coloured with achote seeds and traditionally served at every feast), pancit (Filipino-influenced noodle dish), empanada (meat-filled pastry from Spanish influence), and the ubiquitous plate lunch of rice, barbecue chicken and finadene sauce (Chamorro hot sauce). The Chamorro Village Night Market in Hagatna every Wednesday night is the best food experience in Guam. Japanese and Korean restaurant options in Tumon Bay are excellent and numerous.

Safety & Health in Guam

Guam is generally safe for tourists with US levels of public safety infrastructure. Petty theft can occur in crowded tourist areas in Tumon Bay. The main environmental risks are typhoons (August to December), rip currents on open ocean beaches, and the sun (UV index is extreme in Guam). Ocean swimming at Gun Beach and Tumon Bay is generally safe; Ritidian Beach on the north coast can have stronger surf.

Keep your Roamix eSIM active when driving south Guam's coastal roads, hiking Talofofo or visiting Ritidian Beach in the north. Signal coverage is thinner in these areas, so cache offline maps before departure from Tumon Bay and ensure your emergency 911 is accessible.

Health Note

Guam operates under US healthcare standards. Guam Memorial Hospital in Tamuning and Naval Hospital Guam (military, limited civilian access) are the main facilities. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for non-US visitors, as healthcare costs in Guam match US pricing.

Water Safety

Tap water in Guam is treated and safe to drink throughout the island. The Guam Waterworks Authority maintains treated water supply. Bottled water is widely available and commonly served at resorts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Guam eSIM, connectivity, and travel

Do I need an eSIM or local SIM for Guam?

Either works in Guam. A Roamix eSIM is more convenient: you activate it before departure, it connects to DoCoMo Pacific 5G or IT&E 4G on landing, and you avoid the carrier store visit in Tumon Bay. Physical SIMs from IT&E and DoCoMo Pacific are available in the Micronesia Mall and Tumon Bay stores.

Which mobile network is best in Guam?

DoCoMo Pacific is the technology leader with the fastest 5G in Tumon Bay and central Guam. IT&E has the widest overall coverage including southern villages, Inarajan, Umatac and Merizo. For most tourist itineraries, DoCoMo Pacific delivers the best experience.

How do I set up a Roamix eSIM for Guam?

Purchase a plan at roamix.app, scan the QR code in your phone eSIM settings (Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM), set Roamix as your data line and enable data roaming. Your eSIM connects to DoCoMo Pacific or IT&E automatically on landing at Won Pat International Airport.

Does my US phone plan work in Guam?

Some US domestic carrier plans include Guam. T-Mobile US domestic plans typically cover Guam at no extra charge. AT&T and Verizon have territory coverage for Guam under some plans. Check your specific plan's terms before travel. If not covered, a Roamix eSIM or a local Guam SIM is the solution.

Is Guam part of the US?

Guam is an unincorporated US territory, meaning it is under US sovereignty but is not a US state. US citizens are born in Guam but cannot vote in US presidential elections unless they live on the mainland. Guam uses the US dollar, US laws, US emergency number 911 and American standards throughout.

Do I need a visa to enter Guam?

Guam has its own Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program (GCWVP) separate from the US mainland ESTA. Japanese, Korean, Australian, UK, most EU, Canadian and Taiwanese nationals among others can enter visa-free under GCWVP for up to 45 days. Entry to Guam does not allow travel to the US mainland. Check the full GCWVP eligibility list at cbp.gov.

What currency is used in Guam?

Guam uses the US dollar (USD). No currency exchange is needed for US visitors. Japanese yen and Korean won can be exchanged at the airport and at major Tumon Bay hotels and DFS T Galleria. Cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are accepted everywhere.

What is the best time to visit Guam?

December to March is the dry season and peak season with the best weather: 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, low humidity and no typhoon risk. January and February are ideal. The rainy and typhoon season runs July to November. Liberation Day on July 21 is the biggest local event and draws visitors despite the rainy season.

What is the Blue Hole dive site in Guam?

Blue Hole is a world-famous dive site near Apra Harbour: a 60-metre-diameter opening in the reef dropping into a vertical blue water column. It is known for shark sightings, sea turtles and extraordinary underwater scenery. Advanced divers only due to depth. Book with local Guam dive operators using Roamix data before departure.

Is it safe to visit south Guam?

Yes. South Guam's villages (Inarajan, Umatac, Merizo) are genuinely safe and among the most rewarding parts of the island for cultural and scenic travel. Roads are narrow and winding; drive carefully on the coastal cliff roads. IT&E 4G covers the main villages but some remote stretches have weaker signal, so cache offline maps before heading south.

What is Liberation Day in Guam?

Liberation Day on July 21 is Guam's most important public holiday, commemorating the American liberation of Guam from Japanese occupation on July 21, 1944 after 32 months of occupation. It features a large military parade through Hagatna, fireworks over Tumon Bay and village fiestas across the island.

Does Guam have 5G?

Yes. DoCoMo Pacific launched Guam's first 5G network in 2020, making Guam the first Pacific island territory with 5G. The network covers Tumon Bay, Tamuning and central Hagatna with speeds of 150 to 600 Mbps. IT&E and GTA TeleGuam offer 4G coverage across the rest of the island.

What emergency number should I use in Guam?

911 is the universal emergency number in Guam for police, ambulance and fire, the same as the US mainland. It works from any mobile network including a Roamix eSIM.

Is internet access censored in Guam?

No. Guam has a fully open internet with US First Amendment standards applying. All apps including Netflix, YouTube, Instagram, FaceTime, WhatsApp and X work without restrictions.
