Mobile Hotspot & MiFi Series

High-end 5G mobile hotspots — Netgear Nighthawk M6, Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G — support eSIM. Budget and older 4G hotspots typically do not.

Mobile hotspot eSIM is available on high-end 5G devices from Netgear and Inseego. Standard 4G hotspots and budget-tier devices from any brand use physical SIM only and cannot be upgraded to eSIM.

Carrier lock: Most mobile hotspots in North America are sold carrier-branded and locked. The Netgear M6 Pro on AT&T, Inseego MiFi X on T-Mobile, and similar carrier devices require an unlock before a third-party eSIM like Roamix can be installed. Unlocked or internationally sourced hotspots work without this step.

No QR camera on hotspots: Unlike smartphones, most hotspot devices do not have a camera. eSIM activation is done through the web admin interface using the SM-DP+ server address and activation code from your Roamix email — not by scanning a QR code directly.

How to Activate eSIM on Your Mobile Hotspot

  1. Connect to the hotspot's Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open a browser and go to the admin URL (shown on the device screen, typically 192.168.1.1).
  3. Log in and navigate to Cellular Settings.
  4. Select eSIMAdd ProfileManual Entry.
  5. Enter the SM-DP+ Address and Activation Code from your Roamix confirmation email.
  6. Wait for the profile to download and activate.
  7. Set the Roamix profile as the Active profile.
  8. Confirm the APN is set to 'internet' and Data Roaming is enabled.

Troubleshooting Hotspot eSIM

eSIM option not visible in admin panel: Your hotspot model does not support eSIM (most older and budget hotspots do not). Verify your exact model number against the manufacturer's eSIM support list. The Nighthawk M5 and older models, and standard Inseego MiFi 8800L, do not support eSIM.

Profile download fails with "connection error": Ensure the hotspot has a working physical SIM or Wi-Fi source active during the eSIM provisioning download — the hotspot needs internet access to reach the Roamix eSIM server. Remove any VPN running on the admin device during setup.

Profile installed but no service abroad: Enable Data Roaming: admin panel → Cellular → Roaming → enable. Also check that the Roamix profile is set as the active profile, not just installed. Some hotspot firmware requires an explicit "Set as Active" step after download.

APN configuration issue: Roamix plans use 'internet' as the standard APN. If data does not flow after activation, manually set the APN in the admin panel under Cellular → Advanced → APN Settings. Set APN Name to "internet", leave authentication fields blank.

Mobile Hotspot & MiFi Series eSIM — Frequently Asked Questions

Does my mobile hotspot support eSIM?

Only premium 5G hotspots like the Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro and Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G include eSIM. Older 4G hotspots and budget models from any brand typically use physical SIM only. Check your hotspot's specs for 'eSIM' support before purchasing a plan.

My hotspot is from AT&T/T-Mobile/Verizon — do I need to unlock it?

Yes. Carrier-branded hotspots are locked to the selling carrier. AT&T and T-Mobile typically unlock after 6 months (account in good standing). Verizon unlocks after 60 days. Request unlock via the carrier's website or customer service before attempting to install Roamix.

How do I activate eSIM on a Netgear Nighthawk M6?

Connect to the hotspot's Wi-Fi → open a browser → go to 192.168.1.1 → Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM profile → enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your Roamix email. Manual entry is required — the M6 has no built-in QR camera.

How many devices can connect to a hotspot using Roamix?

The Roamix plan itself has no device limit. Your hotspot hardware determines the connection limit — Netgear Nighthawk M6 supports up to 32 devices, Inseego MiFi X Pro 5G up to 30. All connected devices share the purchased data allowance.
